Doing what he loves, doing it well, enjoying life, giving others joy. Hurting nobody. What's wrong with that? Not "holy" enough?

Billy Joel’s father is Jewish. His mother a goy so unless you are reform he’s as goyish as the pope.
Wear your payous and act pious and sing Billy Joel’s signature sing .All go together?
Would you want this dude to be your representative on R.H.Y.K.?
Boy me !!!!!!!!

Because the definition of a chosid is going lefnim meshuras hadin. If he wants to sings songs which his Rebbe would surely disapprove then change his mode of dress. I know that hasidism is more of a social/cultural thing now but it's confusing the younger generations. Or was the Gra correct.....?

I can see it now...the next "BIG Event" will be declared treif and cancelled by Rabbonim who have no clue what they are banning, and care little about the financial havoc they cause.

The guy's got huge talent; he's a huge anav, and he is a lover of many types f music. And he's making a living...nebach. He was the chazzan in my shul in Allentown for two consecutive yomim tovim...he was great! Now he's moved on to other musical endeavors. More power to him!

PARNOOSEH! PARNOOSEH!

Otherwise he'll have to collect in all our shuls.

Would Yossele Rosenblatt sing such a thing? I am not sure, but if he wouldn't, I don't think Lemmer should either.

Chasidic Chazan singing for non Orthodox Temples??? said...

I am disturbed by his older brother, Cantor Yaakov Lemmer of Lincoln Square Synagogue, singing at benefits for non-orthodox Temples.

A number of months ago that happened at a Reform Temple in Queens, NY.

Now he is scheduled to sing for non-orthodox Temples in Florida.

1) Temple Emanuel Palm Beach - https://www.tepb.org/events/annual-gala-fundraising-concert/

2) Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center - they advertise that they are "an all inclusive LGBT safe synagogue where everyone is welcomed with open arms" - https://www.atjc.org

How does a shtreimel wearing Chasid like Cantor Yaakov Lemmer sing at benefits for non-Orthodox Temples????

Do they think the regular rules not apply to them?

How did Orthodox Jews become so petty?

Besides, music (singing?) is a universal language. Where and what he sings/plays is down to his own conscience. He has a talent - so let him display it if he wants.

"How did Orthodox Jews become so petty?"

It is a matter of religious doctrine and religious boundaries.

Religion has rules and regulations.

Do you think all rules and regulations are "petty"?

Wrong moron his mother is catholic but don’t believe me look it up on line.

fyi,

"Do you think all rules and regulations are "petty"?"

No. I think rules against murder and theft are essential to society.
I also think rules against raping children (or anyone) are also important - even if many haredim may disagree.
Rules against property damage and vandalism are pretty important too.
And where would we be without the rules that tell us which light to stop for, or on which side of the road to drive?

Rules are important... until they're written by a no-fun-or-joy religious dictatorship that gets their naches out of diminishing and restricting the lives of others.

Oh, but they're speaking on behalf of GOD.
So maybe it's just God that's petty. (LOL, of course not.)
Or perhaps the so-called religious "authorities" just know nothing about God and are a bunch of control freaks who worry about exposed elbows on women and what music reaches the ears of their sheeple.
Certainly, it's the latter.

What I prefer about music reality shows over chazzanut is you can turn off the TV if you don't like it but chazzanut you're stuck with all Shabbat morning unless there's another minyan nearby or you know the caterer for the kiddish and can "help".

I think it's a Kiddush Hashem that a man with a Golden Voice, Payos, Black Velvet Yarmulke sings G-d Bless America for the whole world to see. Get with the program
