Traffic will be banned from a Brooklyn block that’s now home to a sprawling “Black Lives Matter” mural through the end of summer, Mayor de Blasio announced Monday.
The mural, which was painted over the weekend along the roadway on Fulton St. between Marcy and Brooklyn Aves., mimics one installed on Washington, D.C.'s, 16th St. outside the White House last week. Muriel Bowser, the mayor of D.C., also named the stretch Black Lives Matter Plaza.
Mayor de Blasio said the traffic restrictions in Brooklyn are meant to make it easier for New Yorkers to continue the anti-police demonstrations that began May 25 after the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd at the hands of a white cop. Protests began nationwide in the week following his murder and have continued across the country since, including in the five boroughs.
De Blasio said the car ban will last until the end of summer, but didn’t give a specific end date.
The block serves two busy bus routes, the B44 and the B25, and the mayor said he was working with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on an alternative service plan.
“We’re very supportive of the city’s tribute and are working to mitigate any impacts to customers to the degree possible," said MTA spokesman Tim Minton.
