Rabbi Ronnie Greenwald Passes On

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rabbi Ronald Greenwald zt”l of Monsey, NY.
A renowned mechanech, askan and advocate, Rabbi Greenwald earned the respect of Jews across the religious spectrum for his dedication to helping Jews whenever and wherever he could.

Born January 8, 1934, in New York City, “Ronnie,” as everyone knew him, made a career of spy trading, international hostage mediation, and other forms of high-stakes, high-intrigue diplomacy.
A one-man chessed organization, in Boro Park, in Monsey, at Camp Magen Avraham and Camp Sternberg, and working for many organizations and institutions, thousands of people benefited from the selflessness and care of Rabbi Greenwald.
Rabbi Greenwald was born to European Jewish immigrant parents and raised on the lower east side of Manhattan before his family relocated to Brownsville in Brooklyn. He studied at Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland after high school. After getting married, he settled in Boro Park and, the early years of his marriage, he worked as a rebbi and teacher in Brooklyn yeshivos.
Rabbi Greenwald became active in politics in 1962, at the age of 28, lobbying on behalf of Torah Umesorah to promote the creation and success of Jewish day schools in the United States. At the request of activist George Klein, Rabbi Greenwald became involved in the gubernatorial campaign of Nelson A. Rockefeller and helped Rockefeller win an unprecedented share of the Jewish vote for a Republican at the time. After this success, the Rockefeller campaign recommended Rabbi Greenwald to the campaign of Richard M. Nixon and the Nixon re-election campaign appointed Rabbi Greenwald to work for the President’s 1972 re-election in the Jewish community. In winning 35% of the Jewish vote in 1972, Nixon, like Rockefeller, did far better among Jewish voters than would be expected from a Republican in that era.
During the Nixon administration, Rabbi Greenwald served as liaison between the administration and the Jewish community in a variety of ways. He obtained a $1 million grant to open a legal aid office in Brooklyn to assist the needy in the community of Williamsburg among other accomplishments.
During the Watergate scandal, Rabbi Greenwald contacted various Democratic Jewish members of Congress, including Elizabeth Holtzman, Bella Abzug and Arlen Specter to try to convince them that impeaching the president would weaken the United States and, by extension, hurt Israel, which, in the wake of the Yom Kippur War needed the support of a strong United States. Although his entreaties did not work, as President Nixon was eventually forced to resign rather than face impeachment, he did earn a Presidential letter of thanks.
Rabbi Greenwald was involved in scores of release efforts for various prisoners from around the world.
In perhaps his highest profile case, Rabbi Greenwald worked closely with Representative Benjamin Gilman and East German lawyer Wolfgang Vogel to secure the release Soviet dissident and Refusenik Natan Sharansky from Soviet prison in the late 1970s. He made more than 25 trips across the “Iron Curtain” to East Germany as part of that effort. The Rockland Journal News reported that Rabbi Greenwald was the “man behind the talks” that freed Sharansky.
In conjunction with Representative Gilman, Rabbi Greenwald negotiated the rescue a 24-year-old Israeli citizen named Miron Markus in 1978 who was living in Zimbabwe. Mr. Markus was captured when an airplane piloted by his brother-in-law, Jackie Bloch, was forced to land
in Mozambique, where Mr. Bloch was killed and Markus taken hostage. Rabbi Greenwald, Congressman Gilman and others arranged for a complex swap that involved four countries Mozambique, Israel, the United States and East Germany, convicted East German spy Robert Thompson and U.S. student Alan van Norman.
Raul Granados was kidnapped by leftist guerillas in November 1979 while at a soccer game in Guatemala City. Rabbi Greenwald, working again with Representative Gilman, helped broker the exchange of Mr. Granados in exchange for a ransom payment of $4,000,000.
Vladimir Raiz, a Soviet molecular biologist, had been denied permission to leave the former Soviet Union for 18 years before Rabbi Greenwald entered the picture. Rabbi Greenwald secretly met with Raiz in Lithuania in 1989. Following negotiations with Soviet authorities, Raiz and his family were permitted to emigrate in 1990.
In 1994, political activist and New York native Lori Berenson was arrested, tried and sentenced to life imprisonment for treason by a Peruvian military tribunal. She was accused of belonging to a Marxist rebel group and plotting to overthrow the Peruvian government. With the support of President Bill Clinton. in 2000, Rabbi Greenwald led a delegation of American negotiators to Peru to press the Peruvian government to free Berenson or, at least, to grant her a new trial in a civilian court. The effort succeeded and Berenson was afforded a new trial in civilian court. At her subsequent trial, Berenson was convicted again and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.
Rabbi Greenwald was involved in many of the attempts to gain clemency for Jonathan Pollard by convincing the then serving President of the United States to pardon Pollard or to commute his sentence. Particularly noteworthy was his effort to set up a three way trade involving Israel, the United States and Russia. Under Rabbi Greenwald’s proposal, Israel would release Professor Marcus Klingberg, who was being held by Israel or suspected Russian spy Shabattai Kalmanovich to Russia, the Russians would release Dmitri Polyakov (known to the FBI as “Top Hat”) or Anatoly Filatov, who were both being held by Russia on suspicion of having spied for the United States, and the U.S. would pardon Pollard and allow him to move to Israel. Congressman Benjamin Gilman and Sam Nunn’s former chief of staff, Jeff Smith (who would later become chief council for the CIA) were also involved in the proposed transaction.
Unfortunately for Pollard, the effort broke down when Yossi Ben Aharon, assistant to Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Shamir insisted on Israel negotiating directly with the Russians rather than through an intermediary such as Rabbi Greenwald. The Israeli negotiating effort never gained traction, and Pollard remained in prison until 2015.
Rabbi Greenwald’s and others’ efforts to convince U.S. President Bill Clinton to commute Pollard’s sentence were hampered in large part by a letter written to Clinton by Donald Rumsfeld and signed by seven former Secretaries of Defense, urging the President not to pardon Pollard.
In 1983, Dr. Alfred Zehe, an East German scientist attending a conference in Massachusetts, was arrested for conspiracy to violate U.S. espionage laws for allegedly handing secret “sonar plan” documents to East German operatives in Mexico. East German lawyer and spy trader Wolfgang Vogel was put in charge of the effort to free Zehe. He brought in Alan Dershowitz to oversee the legalities of the effort and Greenwald to act as a person liaison between him and Zehe.
Rabbi Greenwald visited Zehe several times in prison. During this time, he learned that Zehe was being threatened with being brought to trial under espionage charges that carried the threat of many decades in prison while being cajoled to turn over to the CIA whatever information he had that might be helpful to that agency. Rabbi Greenwald conveyed messages to Zehe from his family urging him to do whatever it took to allow himself to be released as soon as possible. Eventually, Zehe pled guilty and conducted a full debriefing in exchange for the promise of a light sentence. He was released as part an exchange of agents in June 1985.
Rabbi Greenwald was a featured speaker at many conventions and gatherings throughout his career.
In September 1997, during a visit of scores of rabbonim and others to Lithuania to commemorate the 200th yahrtzeit of the Vilna Gaon, Rabbi Greenwald personally successfully negotiated with the Lithuanian government to allow the burial of several desecrated Sifrei Torah. The Sifrei Torah were among hundreds of Sifrei Torah that had been disgraced by the Nazis and/or the Lithuanians during World War II. With the negotiated help of the government, Rabbi Greenwald and others located over three hundred Sifrei Torah, including some that were being held in the basement of a church. They were able to salvage most of the scrolls for further use. The Sifrei Torah that could not be salvaged were buried in a ceremony attended by visiting Jews from around the World and Lithuanian officials.
The day prior to the levaya, Rabbi Greenwald was invited to address the Lithuanian Parliament.
During the same visit, Rabbi Greenwald intervened with the Prime Minister to prevent the desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Vilnius. The Lithuanian government was going to raze the cemetery and erect a shopping mall on the site. Rabbi Greenwald contacted the Prime Minister’s office and promised the Prime Minister that saving the cemetery would bring him great blessing. As Rabbi Greenwald had previously interceded on Lithuania’s behalf as it sought to enter NATO, his words carried strong influence with the Prime Minister and his request was heeded.
On November 15, 2009, The Yitti Liebel Help Line honored Rabbi Greenwald by dedicating the event and the journal as a tribute to him. The journal cover page referred to him as a “champion of chessed” and as a “living, one man chessed organization.” The journal credited him with saving Jews from eastern Europe and Africa and proclaimed that “thousands of people owe more than they can ever repay to one hero – Ronnie.”
Rabbi Greenwald had a variety of unusual ties to South Africa in the Apartheid era. He was the diplomatic representative of the African Bantustan of Bophuthatswana in the United States, when that “homeland” lacked international recognition.
When not engaged in high-stakes international diplomacy, Rabbi Greenwald operated Camp Sternberg, a summer camp in the Catskills, and ran Monsey Academy for Girls, a private high school in Rockland County, New York, of which he was the founder.
Rabbi Greenwald served as chairman of the board of the Women’s League in Rockland County, which creates and oversees adult group homes in that county, and of the Borough Park branch of the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services (JBFCS). He also served on the Board of Governors of the Orthodox Union and as acting chairman of Magenu.
Rabbi Greenwald was on vacation in Florida and had been feeling fine when he retired for the night. He was niftar overnight in his sleep.
His passing has plunged his thousands of friends and admirers into mourning.
Levaya details will be provided when they are available.
UPDATE, 10:10 a.m.: The aron will be flown to New York and the levaya is expected to be held this afternoon in Monsey, NY. The aron will then be flown from JFK International Airport to Eretz Yisroel for kevurah there. Further details will be provided once they are finalized.

The Yeshivah World Blog Steals R' Shmuelevitz Photos and puts their water mark on it

They do it all the time, for example just this week they took photos of the murdered Dafna Meir a"h from OnlySimchas and then put their own watermarks on it .... they also steal utube clips and then put their own logo on ..it

Now they posted old photos of R' Shmuelevitz and put their watermark all over it...

Now I steal pictures too, but I don't put watermarks on it to make believe it's exclusively mine..

Hey frummies .. is Geneivas dass permitted for a Yeshivishe blog?
Just askin....

Here look at how brazen these thieves at Yeshivaworld are?

Here see a family photo of Devorah Stubin now has the Yeshiva World Watermark on it

Chareidie Men violating the prohibition of "Dressing like Women"?

The pictures of the models below were from the Yves Saint Laurent and Hermes Fashion Show!

So what will the Chareidie Oilim do now?
Dressing like any of the models falls into the Torah Prohibition of "Lo Tilbash" .... which means that Men cannot  wear women clothing!
I hear that R' Niederman is rounding up the "Satmar Troops" to protest the show!

Zurich Rabbonim Say that Protests against Swiss Will Cause Damage to Jews

SO it turns out that DIN was absolutely correct that the protests against the Swiss Consulate is being organized by the Satmars!
See Kol Korah below!

At any rate, the Rabbonim that actually live in Switzerland are outraged at the  barbarians that are protesting the Swiss Consulate for expanding a museum that will include an old Jewish cemetery ... The Swiss want to exhume the bodies and place them elsewhere..... that brought out the "Williamsburg and Monroe roaches" in full force!

The Swiss Rabbonim are saying that they are working with the Swiss Government and the museum, and will work out some sort of compromise ... and that the protests will do untold damage!

The Satmar Leideigeires don't give two hoots about the Swiss Rabbonim, laughing them off.... as some annoying mosquitoes!

It's interesting to note that these protests are definitely Hisgaros Be'Umois, "antagonizing the gentile nations" something that the Satmar gangster brothers, accuse Israel of ..

These same "askonim" will only protest dead Jews....
The fact that  "live" Jews around the world are now in mortal danger, the fact that the EU is boycotting Israel, and making it difficult for Jews to make a living in the country that Hashem gave us, means absolutely nothing ....
Not one word of protest or a little bit of sympathy for the Jewish family of the murdered Tzeideikas Dafna Meir a"h!

Dafna Meir's Funeral

Some 1,500 people came to the Givat Shaul cemetery on Monday morning to pay respects to Dafna Meir who was murdered by a terrorist in her home in Otniel on Sunday.
Meir, 38, was a wife to Natan and a mother of six:
Renana, 17, Akiva, 15, Ahava, 10, Noa, 11, Yair, six, and Yaniv, four. Dafna gave birth to the four older children and she and Natan adopted the two younger ones who are brothers.
Dafna’s eldest daughter Renana, 17 said “I didn’t just lose a mother, but also my best friend,” at her mother’s funeral. “It’s hard for me to think we will not laugh together or fight anymore, that you won’t accompany me to the IDF induction center, down the aisle, and to the maternity ward,” Renana continued.
“I’m sorry that in your hardest moments I was unable to help you.”
Renana witnessed her mother’s murder and called for help, screaming into the phone “My mother was stabbed, my mother was stabbed. Help me!” Dafna fought off the terrorist to try to keep them from hurting her children. Renana’s screams helped scare him off as well.
“You left me with six treasures, I will keep them safe for you,” husband Natan said in a voice choked with tears.
“My Dafna is one in a million, who grew up in a house that wasn’t a home and still managed to rehabilitate. She decided to give back grace to the world, and she did,” Natan said of his wife, who grew up in foster homes until the age of 13.
“We met when we were soldiers, at the south Lebanon border. It only took us a moment to fall in love. My Dafna, thank you for every moment I had with you,” he continued. “Our love is too strong to be a passing thing.”

Chareidi Animals Attack IDF Soldiers on Shmuel HaNavi Street on Friday Night as the Soldiers were going to a Shabbos Seuda

Thank G-d there were some sane people on the street that intervened .....

A group of about 80 IDF soldiers and officers were attacked on Shmuel HaNavi Street in Yerushalayim on Friday night Parshas Bo. One female officer was hit in her face with an object but did not require transport to a hospital B”H.

According to a Kikar Shabbos News report, quoting eyewitnesses, the chareidie animals came out from a tisch and saw the soldiers and decided to attack them.

A number of area residents saw what was taking place and intervened, explaining they were not about to stand by and let the soldiers get attacked and create a Chilul Hashem against the chareidi tzibur.

It appears the soldiers were heading to the Maalot Daphne apartment of Rav Machlis for a seudas Shabbos.

During the Shabbos meal the rav explained to them the actions of the attackers do not in any way represent the majority of the chareidi community.

The Route that Devorah Stubin took to her demise ...which explains her tragic mistake!

Jews are been murdered in Israel and in Europe and the Rabbis are busy protesting the Swiss for destroying a Medieval Cemetery in Zurich

Friends, we are living in an upside down world!
"an almah de'shakreh" a false world!

Rabbonim are sitting in their beautiful houses in Williamsburg and Boro-Park twiddling their thumbs while Jews are being murdered on the streets of Israel and not a word from these guys.
They wouldn't even think of organizing any protests!

Not one word of organizing a protest  about  Jews who can no longer wear Yarmulkas on the streets of France because of fear and lack of police protection!

Not a peep from these Chareidie leaders, while they sit and watch  England and Germany turning into cesspools of Arab hate against their fellow Jews.

Jews throughout Europe are living in fear ...
Just today there was a report that 500,000 Jews in Europe are contemplating Aliyah because there will be no place for a Jew in Europe...

Here in the USA our leaders sit by and allow Jewish Kapos to endorse a candidate like Hillary Clinton, whose  advisers are known anti-Semites.
They encourage an illiterate imbecile like Ezra Friedlander to be an "Askan" who writes an Op-Ed in a well read Jewish Blog explaining Jeffrey Nadler's vote to place nuclear arms in the hands of anti-Semitic Iran!

In the last two days we all witnessed a Kiddush Hashem ....
Jews from all different backgrounds got together to search for a girl that no one knew but was missing.   Jews all over the tri state area felt the pain of the family and immediately organized a massive search even on the Holy Shabbos ....

Why can't we all get together and arrange a protest of thousands against the EU, countries that want to destroy the Jewish People? Why????????????

So what do you think your leaders are up to???

They are arranging a protest tomorrow against against the Swiss mission to the UN that want to expand some Museum in Zurich and are planning  to exhume a Jewish cemetery  that is over 500 years old...

Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for protecting Jewish cemeteries wherever they are, but where are their voices and protests for Jews that are alive and kicking?

Why don't they "takeh" exhume the bodies and bring them to Eretz Yisroel?
Enough of spending Jewish Money on fixing these cemeteries up and then spending Jewish money to make pilgrimages every year ...
Enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These same Rabbonim were quick to call massive protests against the Jewish State of Israel because the State of Israel wants to do what Moshe Raabeinu, Yehoshua, Dovid Hamelech, Shlomo Hamelech and even R' Akivah did...drafting boys to the army..

Remember the massive protests against cellphones?
Listen guys, I have been around the block more than once, and have never ... I repeat never seen any chasid in the business world without a smartphone!

The only Chasid that I have seen with those kosher flip phones was over 70 years old and when I questioned him he had no clue what the internet was!

So why is it they will never arrange a protest against EU that is boycotting Israel?
Why don't they arrange protests against the UN for constantly harassing Israel?

Question: How are they able to muster thousands to protest on one day's notice?

They are just like the Sharptons that sit around all day and wait for a day of rage!

By the way, I couldn't help noticing that  the organizer of this protest is R' David Niederman, President of the United Jewish Organizations (UJO) of Williamsburg and North Brooklyn...

Hey, do you guys know who the UJO is?

Oh ! I figured .... the UJO, my friends is Satmar!
They are the only ones always protesting on behalf of dead Jews ...
Protesting against the archaeologists in Israel ...
Protesting netuchei meisim ....

Hey Niederman .. .... you are only President of UJO NORTH BROOKLYN?
What about south brooklyn??????

Question: It's all very nice, but can you guys protest just once, for Jews that are still alive?

Satmar are the only ones that can arrange a massive protest overnight!

Now read what effort these "Askanim" did for the dead Jews!

Hundreds of Rabbis and concerned citizens will rally Monday at the Swiss mission to the United Nations, pleading to cancel plans to exhume a medieval Jewish cemetery in Zurich, as part of the expansion of the Kunsthaus museum.
According to the government’s own assessment, the ongoing expansion directly threatens the cemetery, a sacred Jewish heritage site. In letters to the Swiss and Zurich authorities, and in meetings with the Swiss representatives in New York, London and Tel Aviv, Jewish communities appealed to halt the ongoing desecration of the cemetery. The United States Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad also appealed to the Swiss government to stop the ongoing excavation. It was pointed out that the engineering plans can be amended to allow for graves to remain intact without interfering with the expansion of the Kunsthaus.
“International law, human rights, property and religious rights dictate that a cemetery should be preserved and protected there,” said Dr. Bernard Fryshman, of the Conference of Academicians for the Protection of Jewish Cemeteries. “We are shocked that an enlightened nation such as Switzerland intends to violate those rights, and to desecrate our precious and revered heritage. We hope that our pleas will be heard, and the Swiss government will not cause this terrible anguish to the Jewish people.”
The prohibition against moving graves is ingrained in Talmudic law. 78 leading European Rabbis issued a decree stressing how serious a violation the removal of graves is. The impending uprooting of this cemetery is especially hurtful, given the history and sanctity of the site, which dates back over 600 years and is known to be the resting place of great sages – most prominently, some accounts have it, one of the jurist Rabbi Moshe of Zurich, of the authors of Tosefot, a major Talmudic commentary.
“This holy cemetery remains the heritage of the international Jewish community and concerns us all,” said Rabbi David Niederman, President of the United Jewish Organizations (UJO) of Williamsburg and North Brooklyn who met Swiss representatives in New York and London. “The Jewish community at large simply cannot remain silent in face of this holy site being destroyed.”

The Meir children range from 17 to six years of age.

According to an initial security assessment, the terrorist entered Otniel, snuck into Meir's house, and stabbed her to death before fleeing the scene.
Dafna a"h with her Husband

"We share in mourning the loss of the family of Dafna Meir who was murdered tonight in the settlement of Otniel," said the Saroka University Medical Center in a statement. "Dafna worked as a nurse in the Department of Neurosurgery at the hospital. She was a treasured and professional nurse and was beloved by her peers and patients."

"Giving to others was a part of both her personal and professional life," added the statement.

Obama leaves behind Jewish former FBI agent in Iran

Iran released four Americans in a prisoner exchange, but Jewish-American Robert Levinson is not among them
By Gil Ronen

\

The loved ones of a former FBI agent missing in Iran said Saturday that they were "devastated" to learn that he was "left behind" and not included in the latest prisoner swap with Iran.

Robert Levinson, 68, a father of seven from Coral Springs, Florida, vanished during a trip to Iran in 2007, disappearing on Kish Island off Iran's coast. His family has acknowledged that he had been working for the CIA in a rogue operation.
"We are happy for the other families. But once again, Bob Levinson has been left behind. We are devastated," Levinson's family said on its Facebook page.

Levinson has been widely reported to be Jewish.

Iran has denied official involvement in his disappearance and theWashington Post quoted an anonymous US official as saying that as part of the exchange deal, Iran “committed to continue cooperating with the United States to determine the whereabouts of Robert Levinson.”

His son, Daniel, wrote in December on the Facebook page dedicated to his father's freedom:
"We were optimistic about President Obama’s pursuit of direct talks with Iranian officials. In particular, we saw the nuclear talks as a golden opportunity to resolve my father’s case, so long as both sides were willing to negotiate. However, we were devastated that he was not released in the aftermath of the accord. Now we fear that the United States has squandered its best opportunity for leverage in ensuring my father’s safe return home."
Officials announced Saturday that four Americans - Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian; former Marine Amir Hekmati; Christian preacher Saeed Abedini; and Nosratollah Khosravi-Roodsari - will be released in a prisoner exchange between the US and Iran. The four were then released and reported to be en route to Germany.
A fifth American, Matthew Trevithick, was released separately and was on his way back home Saturday evening, his family and White House officials said.

NBC cited an unnamed senior Obama administration official who said Saturday that the US has not been able to determine Levinson's whereabouts, but has repeatedly raised the issue of his disappearance with Iranian officials.

Obama administration officials told a conference call Saturday that they remain committed to finding Levinson and ensuring his return, the senior official added.

In 2011, Levinson's family members released photos and videos they had been sent in which he begged for help.
"I have been held here for three and a half years," he said in the video. "I am not in very good health. I am running very quickly out of diabetes medicine."

The last known man to see Levinson alive in Iran has claimed that Levinson was definitely detained by Iranian authorities and is almost certainly still in Iranian custody if he remains alive, according to Christian Science Monitor.

Dawud Salahuddin, an African-American convert to Islam who met with Levinson on Kish in 2007, told the Monitor in Tehran that they were detained at the Maryam Hotel on March 9, 2007, by six plainclothes policemen and then separated.

Israeli Woman Murdered Inside Her Otniel Home; Terrorist Flees Scene; Manhunt Launched

An Israeli woman in her thirties was murdered in a stabbing attack adjacent to Otniel, a town in the southern Har Hevron region of Judea.

The woman, aged around 40, was critically wounded and succumbed to her wounds shortly after.

The Arab terrorist who carried out the attack succeeded in fleeing the scene. Security forces are currently pursuing the terrorist, aided by a helicopter, and residents of the town have been asked to stay in their homes during the manhunt.

Noam Bar, a senior Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedic, said, "the sight was difficult, we saw an unconscious woman aged around 40, who was not breathing and had no pulse."
"She suffered from stab wounds to her upper body; we performed continued resuscitation but in the end we were forced to pronounce her death," said Bar.

The attack comes just minutes after a stabbing was thwarted at the western gate of Kiryat Arba, which leads to Hevron. In that incident, a female Arab terrorist was apprehended with a knife in her handbag before she was able to inflict any wounds.
Video from the terrorist's arrest shows security forces neutralizing her. To watch click the image below.
That thwarted stabbing was the third of the day; earlier an Arab terrorist attempted to carry out a stabbing attack at the Samaria Regional Brigade Junction in Samaria (also known as Bahad 3), but was shot dead by soldiers before he was able to harm anyone.

Before that attempt, a potentially major serious attack was thwarted outside a Jerusalem synagogue, as three Arab youths were arrested after having been found armed with knives outside the Heichal Yaakov synagogue in Kiryat Moshe.

The three are believed to have planned to carry out an attack on the synagogue as it was packed with worshipers attending morning prayers.
