Look very carefully at their peyos!
Maybe someone should have given them one of those halacha haircut cards.

Not sure if this picture is authentic...
it looks heavily edited.

This picture is very unflattering,
if authenticated .
But fact is that the litvishe gedolim ,
had in general a youth that was open
to the western world , and later in life
changed to a frum style .
They were basically BT ,
nothing denigrating, but still not
flattery.
By the Chasidim , the Rebbes ,(usually)
Could say Ashrei Yaldusainu sheloh
Bayshu Ziknusainu .

What was the minhag of wearing yarmulkas inside a house in those days?

I recall seeing a picture of a young Rav Shlomo Zalman, zt"l, that looked similar.
As for no kippah on them, that's standard for photos. People all took pictures without anything on their heads. There's a famous picture of the Rebbe, z"l, like that as well. It means nothing.

@yeshivish, while one can understand your sentiment that the post war generations of the yeshivaworld/litvishe communities are "outfrumming" the pre war generations including the gedolim of those generations; and are therefore wrong, that isn't necessarily correct. on the contrary. we find in the gemara that after his petirah, rebbi stopped coming back to make kiddush on friday night "shelo lhotzi laz al tzadikim harishonim" (because it would make them look bad that they were on a lower level then rebbi). furthermore, chazal say that Hashem saw that in the future, the righteous would be few, so "amad v'shaslun bchol dor vdor".

The students of Slabodka took themselves very seriously, and dressed well.
