Nevada man becomes first in US to contract coronavirus twice

A 25-year-old Nevada man has become the first confirmed case of a person being re-infected with the coronavirus in the US, researchers said Monday.

The patient was infected with two different genetic strains of COVID-19 in less than two months, according to a case study published in the medical journal “The Lancet.”

“The second infection was symptomatically more severe than the first,” the authors of the study wrote.

The man, who had no underlying conditions, originally tested positive for the virus on April 18, and experienced symptoms including headache, coughing, nausea and diarrhea.

He isolated, got better and then tested negative twice in May.

But by the end of that month, the man went to an urgent care center with the same symptoms he’d felt before, plus fever and dizziness.

He tested positive again on June 5.

The patient was admitted to the hospital after suffering shortness of breath and requiring supplemental oxygen. He eventually recovered.

The fact that the man tested negative twice in between bouts with the illness means it’s unlikely he suffered one prolonged infection, according to the study authors.

The researchers said the case indicates that being exposed to the bug previously doesn’t completely guarantee immunity in all cases.

“All individuals, whether previously diagnosed with COVID-19 or not, should take identical precautions to avoid infection with SARS-CoV-2,” the scientists wrote.

Previous case studies of similar coronavirus re-infections have been published in Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Belgium and Ecuador.

Palestinian PM: God help us if Trump wins

Any more questions for who a Jew should vote for?

The US voting President Donald Trump out of office is critical for the Palestinians, Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh told the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on Monday.

“The election is very important. God help us, the EU and the whole world if there are four more years of Trump,” he said.
Shtayyeh spoke out against Trump’s peace plan, presented earlier this year.
“Trump has wasted four years of everyone’s time,” he said. “The ultimate deal was not delivered. [Trump’s plan] was rejected by the Palestinians, the Arabs and Europe…The US is just too biased.”
The PA prime minister lamented Trump’s “unilateral measures,” such as moving the US embassy to Jerusalem.
Despite his stated opposition to such unilateral moves, Shtayyeh called for Europe to recognize a Palestinian state, saying it will help bring about a two-state solution. He asked for a full association agreement between the EU and the PA to be drawn up in preparation for statehood.
Another one-sided action Shtayyeh opposed was the US cutting aid to the Palestinians.

Who Are the Frum Community Fooling, Who are they Killing?

When it all began sometime around Purim, we did not understand how deadly this novel virus would be. We couldn’t know. We couldn’t be blamed for not knowing. We didn’t realize that eating together, and singing and dancing together were the easiest ways to transmit this deadly disease. But that was Purim.

By Passover we knew for sure. We were mourning the deaths of our dear family and friends. We were recovering from the virus ourselves.
Seven weeks later, on Shavuot, COVID-19 was still raging. And on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simhat Torah it still raged.
It’s not what we wanted, it’s not what we expected, but it is – as the saying goes – what it is.
So why can’t the Jewish world, the haredi, ultra-Orthodox world in particular, accept this hard truth? Why do some people think that they are different from everyone else?
As Jews, we know how to abide by rules and regulations: Shabbat, kashrut, the 613 commandments we obey on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. How is it that people either don’t realize or don’t care that by flaunting the rules being imposed on us by medical professionals, they are risking their lives, the lives of people about whom they care, even the lives of people whose names they now know but whose lives they have – because of their own selfish and self-serving needs and desires – altered forever.
I’m angry. I’m more than angry. I’m enraged, and I’m embarrassed.
My fellow Jews are rioting. They are burning protective masks, mocking social distancing and fighting with police. And the whole world is watching.
And it’s been going on this entire pandemic. How can such people – the “People of the Book” – not realize that instead of saving lives as we are instructed, they are causing the loss of lives?
Weddings are celebrated and then, about five days later, the parents or grandparents of brides and grooms are testing positive for the virus. They might die. Thousands of people attend a funeral of someone who died from COVID-19, and then hundreds become infected. Again, they might die.
People mourn, sitting shiva – not Zoom shiva but real shiva, where well-wishers enter their homes to share condolences – and the mourners themselves end up sick, hospitalized or dead. A grandmother contracts it from a grandchild. An uncle catches it from a nephew and is admitted to the ICU. It is a deadly cycle.
INCONVENIENCING OURSELVES in order to respect and honor the elderly and those most at risk should not be treated as a burden, it should be treated as a gift. When we have the ability to help save lives, why would people – our people – choose instead to engage in acts that will, ultimately and inevitably, take lives? Why?
The haredi community believes they are being singled out and even persecuted, in the United States as in Israel, because they are different, because they stand out. They are right. They are being singled out. But not for those reasons. They have thrown the health recommendations out the proverbial window and their number of coronavirus cases has skyrocketed. That’s why.
When the number of cases declined in Orlando, Florida – the home of Disney World, “the happiest place on Earth” – until this past week, there has to be a reason. Maybe it’s because it’s Sukkot, and Orlando was the destination of choice for thousands of Jews from haredi communities across the USA.
Do they not see the correlation or can they just not accept the truth?
The riots I am seeing on television and social media, the open disregard for the law of the land, is the stuff of anarchists and hate groups, not the Orthodox Jewish community. The logic is warped. The violence is real.
Synagogues, stores and restaurants in some Orthodox communities are pretending to comply. They are posting large signs on their doors that say “CLOSED,” and in smaller letters, in Hebrew or Yiddish they write, “Use the back door instead,” as if the police don’t know what’s happening. The haredi community might not be fluent in the use of Google Translate, but the police certainly are. And in the end, who are they hurting? Who are they fooling? More importantly, who are they killing? Against whom are they committing the ultimate sin?
Doctors and scientists still do not fully understand this virus, but there are some things they know. They know that avoiding large groups save lives. They know that wearing masks save lives. They know that social distancing saves lives. And they know the importance of hand-washing. It’s not rocket science, but it is science.
Maybe, just maybe – if we all do our best to follow the advice of the health professionals and others who know what they’re talking about – by next Purim we will be able to sing and dance and dine and rejoice with no fear of spreading the virus.

Two-Shekel Weight From First Beit Ha'Mikdash Discovered Near Kotel

An ancient limestone-made weight, dating to the Iron age – the First Temple period, was discovered in an archaeological excavation conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority in conjunction with the Western Wall Heritage Foundation beneath Wilson’s Arch.

Adjacent to the Western Wall of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The weight, corresponding to the known measurement unit of two shekalim, was retrieved during sifting of earthen fills by the City of David sifting project.

The excavation is nearing its completion, unearthing fascinating discoveries soon to be included in the tour of the Western Wall Tunnels.

Mordechai (Suli) Eliav, director of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation responded to the discovery, saying: “How exciting, in the month of Tishrei, whose symbol is the scales of justice, to find a souvenir from the First Temple period. Actually now, when coming to the Western Wall is so restricted due to the coronavirus pandemic, this finding strengthens the eternal connection between the Jewish nation, Jerusalem, and the Western Wall while offering us all encouragement.”

According to Dr. Barak Monnickendam-Givon and Tehillah Lieberman, directors of the excavation on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority: “The weight is dome-shaped with a flat base. On the top of the weight is an incised Egyptian symbol resembling a Greek gamma (γ), representing the abbreviated unit ‘shekel.’ Two incised lines indicate the double mass: two shekalim."

"One of the uses of the shekel weight system during the First Temple period was to collect an annual tax of half a shekel dedicated to the sacrifices and upkeep of the Temple."

"According to previous finds, the known weight of a single shekel is 11.5 grams, thus a double shekel should way 23 grams – exactly as this weight does. The accuracy of the weight attests to advanced technological skills as well as to the weight given to precise trade and commerce in ancient Jerusalem. Coins were not yet in use during this period, therefore accuracy of the weights played a significant role in business."

"Year-round and especially during the times of pilgrimage, the area at the foot of the Temple Mount was sure to be busy. Locals and pilgrims would have traded for sacrifices and offerings as well as for food, souvenirs and other commodities. A weight such as the one discovered would have been used to measure accurate amounts of products at the market.”

During previous archaeological excavations beneath Wilson’s Arch, directed by Dr, Joe Uziel, Tehillah Lieberman and Dr. Avi Solomon, several stone courses of the Western Wall were exposed, after being covered with earthen fills some 1800 years ago.

The renewed excavation continues the previous discoveries of the preceding dig. “The unique finding from the First Temple Period, discovered in a context dating several centuries later, to the Roman period, indicates that the area of the Western Wall encapsulates various remains from a wide range of periods reflecting the centrality of the area for many centuries” added Dr. Monnickendam-Givon and Lieberman.

Yonah Kohn Killed in Car Crash in Chicago

Tragedy stuck the Chicago community, as word spread of the tragic Petira of Yoni Kohn Z”L, a well know Baal Tzedakah and Baal Chesed.

According to news sources, a two car crash occurred around 12:00PM on Monday in northern Van Buren County, Michigan. Yoni Z”L was one of the victims. Two other adults from another vehicle lost their lives in the crash.

The crash happened around noon at the intersection of Baseline Road and 60th Street, east of South Haven.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Yoni Z”L, who was just 46-years-old, was a beloved father and husband and community member, whose Chesed and Tzedakah were far reaching – not just in Chicago. He was well-known in the nursing home and real estate industries.

He resided in Edison, NJ, and Lakewood prior to moving back to Chicago.

In addition to his countless acts of Chesed, Yoni owned a jet and was a pilot, and quietly flew hundreds of Niftarim to Kever Yisroel over the years. When he resided in Edison NJ, he was bothered that there was no Bikur Cholim house at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, so he single-handedly purchased a property across from the hospital, and built a beautiful facility for people to stay in.
