''THE PROHIBITION OF MEAT & MILK"
The eight chapter of Mesactas Chullin starts with this daf, called "Kol Habasar," "all meats!" This entire chapter deals with the Biblical prohibition of "meat & milk."

The Torah writes:
לא תבשל גדי בחלב אמו
"One should not cook a goat in her mother's milk."

Examining the verse, one would naturally conclude that the Torah only prohibits the act of cooking the goat with its mother's milk, nothing else, the rabbis, however  actually deduced three different prohibitions with meat & milk from this very verse!

(1) Cooking meat and milk together,
(2) Eating meat that was cooked with milk
(3) Benefiting  from milk and meat that was cooked together!

The rabbis also made clear, that the prohibition does not only apply with cooking a goat with milk, but this prohibition applies to all meat of kosher animals and to all milk from kosher animals.

''Excising the Gid Hanasheh (Sciatic Nerve)"

On this daf the Talmud relates a story, that shows us the great fear the rabbis had anyone violating Torah prohibitions.

It happened that Bar Piyouli was standing before Shmuel and was excising the gid hanasheh ( One is prohibited to consume the gid hanasheh) from a piece of thigh meat.
He was cutting it flush off the surface, in accordance with the opinion of Reb Yehuda.

Shmuel said to him
" Dig deeper into the meat,..... had I not witnessed this myself, you would have fed me something forbidden."

When Bar Piyouli heard that Shmuel was accusing him of feeding him that which was prohibited, he got frightened and the knife fell from his hand!

Shmuel to comfort him, said:
" Do not fear, I am not accusing you of being ignorant or negligent, I understand that the one who taught you how to excise the gid hanasheh, taught you in accordance with the opinion of R Yehuda, that one can remove the part of the gid hanasheh that is Biblically prohibited, but the meat surrounding it, does not have to be removed."

However my opinion is in accordance with R' Meir that one has to remove the meat that is attached to the gid hanasheh as well, I therefore suggested that you "dig deeper."

DIN: I am paraphrasing the words of Shmuel!

"The Virtue of Being Humble"

Rebbi Eliezer states: "Hashem says:
"I love the Jewish a whole lot, because even at a time when I grant and bestow greatness upon you, you humble yourselves before Me."

And this is exactly what Moshe Rabbeinu meant when he said before his death:
לא מרובכם מכל העמים חשק ה' בכם ויבחר בכם כי אתם המעט מכל העמים
"Not because you are greater than all the nations did Hashem desire you but because you are small in number "

Meaning:
Though המעט in the literal sense means a "relatively small number,"
the verse can also be understood as referring to Klall Yisroel's humility."

When Hashem bestowed greatness upon Avraham Aveenu and promised him that his children will grow into great nations and other blessings .... Avraham Aveenu responded:
ואנכי עפר ואפר  "I am only earth and ashes"

When Hashem bestowed greatness and royalty to Moshe and Aharon ..... making Moshe a leader and Aharon the High Priest .....
they responded with humility:
ונחנו מה  ..... "What are we?" in other words: "We are not worthy"

"The Tanna Sumchus"
The Tanna Sumchus, lived in the generation of Reb Yehudah Hanasie, which was the last generation of Rabbis given the title "Tanna."

When Reb Yehuda Hanasie redacted the Mishna, he included the Halachos of Sumchus. Sumchus was the primary student of Reb Meir, and his father's name was Yoisef.

Reb Yoichanan testified that Sumchus would be able to give 48 different reasons on each  item declared "Tuma.", and was able to give 48 different reasons of each item labeled "Tehara."

One of the known Halachos authored by Sumchus is:
ממון המוטל בספק -חולקין
In other words:
"In a case where two people claim that certain money is theirs...
and we have a doubt to who the real owner is  ... the money is divided amongst the litigants."

His famous statement was:
(כל המאריך ב''אחד (בקריאת שמע
 -מאריכין לו ימיו ושנותיו
"Anyone who concentrates while saying Krias Shema is guaranteed long life"

"In Honor of Shabbat"
As an introduction we must first explain some basics:

"d'mai" ....... during the Second Temple era, it became apparent to the rabbis, that a significant minority of amei ratzim (basically observant Jews, but ignorant) had become lax in the separation of various required tithes...and we suspect them of lying ...
Accordingly, the rabbis decreed that the produce of an am haaretz be considered דמאי "d'mai" meaning literally "What is this?" In other words, we question if this produce had been tithed? Since we don't know for certain, one may not it eat unless one tithes it.

The Talmud on this daf states that one may not eat produce bought from an am haaretz during the week until you tithe...

The Tannah Rebi Shimon Shezuri, argues and states:
"That one may ask this am haaretz, whether he separated the required tithes, and if he says that he did, one can take him at his word and eat the produce."

On Shabbat, however, even the rabbis agree that one can take the am haaretz on his word and eat the produce if the am haaretz say that he tithed .....
Why?
Because of "Shabbat" ... and on the Shabbat, even an am haaretz wouldn't lie!
Something to think about!

"How To Identify A Kosher Bird"

The Torah itself itemizes all of the different species of un-kosher birds.

What should one do if one isn't familiar and cannot recognize the birds that are mentioned in the Torah that are un-kosher and cannot distinguish which birds are kosher?

So the rabbis gave us distinct characteristics of birds so that even a novice could distinguish which birds are kosher and which ones are not.

For example, a bird that is a predator and consumes its prey alive, is an un-kosher bird.

A bird that eats food thrown in the air is considered a דורס .. a predator and that bird is not kosher.

If we find a bird that doesn't have the characteristics just mentioned, we must then examine it to see if it has any of the kosher characteristics.

Which are:
(1) An extra finger
(2) A crop, זפק, that is the place where the bird stores what it has eaten before its digested.
(3) And finally, If one can easily peel off the outer membrane of the gizzard without having to use a knife.

"Rav"

On this daf, the Talmud relates that Resh Lakish and Reb Yochanan were sitting in the Bet Medrash and were discussing halachois in the name of Rav!

Who was Rav?

Rav was born in Baval and his actual name was Rav Abba bar Aiyvoh .... he was called "Rav" because he was the Rebbe of the entire Jewish people that lived in Galut!

R' Chiyah who was the distinct student of Reb Yehuda Ha'Nasie was Rav's uncle.
When R' Chiyah decided to make Aliyah, he took his nephew, Rav, with him and placed him in the Yeshivah of Reb Yehuda Ha'Nasie, where Rav thrived and became a great talmudic scholar.

Rav decided to return to Baval, his birthplace, but not before he received "Smicha" from Reb Yehuda Ha'Nasie which gave him the license to Judge and to Teach.

After a couple years in Baval, Rav again returned to Eretz Yisroel to continue his studies with Reb Yehuda and after R' Yehuda's demise, Rav continued learning with Rav Gamliel Ha'Nasie the son of R' Yehuda.
He then returned to Baval once more.
