Living in Eretz Yisrael, I often find myself amused by small, unexpected things. Take aravot, for example. Here, every arava seems to droop. When I lived in Monsey, the aravot stood upright like soldiers. In Israel, I never struggle to find a beautiful esrog, a perfect lulav, or impeccable hadassim — but aravot? For nine years, I have yet to find a set that truly satisfies me.
When I shopped for my arba minim, I watched people carefully examine esrogim, lulavim, and hadasim. They turned them over, inspected every detail, scrutinized every leaf. But when it came to aravot, they simply grabbed the package and walked away without even a glance.
And yet, it was the arava that encircled the mizbeach during Sukkos.
That contrast made me think.
Chazal teach that the willow — the arava — has neither taste nor fragrance. It represents Jews who possess neither Torah scholarship nor meticulous mitzvah observance.
The Pesikta deRav Kahana (Piska 27) says something astonishing:
מה הערבה הזאת אין בה לא טעם ולא ריח, כך יש בישראל בני אדם שאינן לא בעלי תורה ולא בעלי מעשים טובים. אמר הקב״ה: לאבדן אי אפשר, אלא יעשו כולם אגודה אחת והם מכפרים אלו על אלו. לפיכך משה מזהיר את ישראל ואומר להם: “ולקחתם לכם”.
“Just as the arava has neither taste nor fragrance, so too among the Jewish people there are those who are not baalei Torah and possess no mitzvos. The Ribbono Shel Olam said: Since I cannot destroy them, I will bind them together as one agudah, and they will atone for one another. Therefore Moshe warned Klal Yisrael and said: ‘Velakachtem lachem…’”
Remarkable. It crossed the mind of the RBS"O to destroy these Jews — and instead He decided that the only way to save them was to keep them together.
Thankfully, I found another Midrash (Vayikra Rabbah 30) that offers an entirely different perspective:
פרי עץ הדר — זה הקב״ה…כפות תמרים — זה הקב״ה…ענף עץ עבות — זה הקב״ה…ערבי נחל — זה הקב״ה…
In this Midrash, all four minim are equal. Not one is more important than the other, and each “min” reflects an aspect of HaKadosh Baruch Hu Himself.
But Chazal add yet another layer.
In Chagigah (12b), they teach that the arava corresponds to the seventh heaven — the highest, holiest of all:
The throne of the Ribbono Shel Olam rests upon the seventh heaven, called aravos. That is why, on the holiest days, we describe Hashem as “רוכב ערבות” — the "One who rides upon the aravos."
There is no more fitting occasion than Sukkos — the holiday that gathers all Jews together — to speak about the arava, through which we learn to recognize that even those who have neither taste nor fragrance are just as important to Klall Yisrael than those represented by the Esrog!
Remember: a thousand esrogim cannot replace even one arava.
This message goes to the heart of Sukkos. Religious life can tempt us to create a hierarchy of Jewish worth. We naturally admire the “esrogim” — those whose Torah knowledge is deep, whose mitzvah observance is precise, whose lives radiate the fragrance of devotion. But admiration becomes dangerous when it leads us to believe that those who do not resemble an esrog are somehow dispensable.
They are not.
The arava has its own essential place in the service of the Ribbono Shel Olam. His throne rests upon the seventh heaven — arava. Remove the arava from the arba minim, and the mitzvah is incomplete.
It is easy to build community with those who look like us; it is far harder to recognize the holiness of those who do not.
The threats to the Jewish people do not come only from outside — they also arise from within. The moment one group of Jews begins to believe that another group is unnecessary, we endanger something fundamental about our nation.
The arba minim fulfill their purpose only when they are held together. So too with the Jewish people.
Sukkos teaches that participation need not create isolation, and religious conviction need not diminish those who are different from us. We need the esrog — with its Torah, its fragrance, and its beauty — but we also need the arava, because a thousand esrogim cannot replace even one arava.

"a thousand esrogim cannot replace even one arava."
Ten thousand arovos cannot replace one esrog!
Now listen to your own Musser & stop bashing Charedim so much!
No kidding?
I am a Charedie, I don't "bash them" I just post what they do! They are "bashing" themselves

Did you even read the post? I don't think so

Your obviously a moron and didn't get the entire beautifully written piece by DIN!
You didn't get the "mussar" but as a typical naive parrot you twist a thought-out Torah piece and turn it into a sarcastic comment. Your children must hate you
Your parents must have really regretted spawning you, Schtik Naar
old quote,eh: the Arava is only acceptable when it joins with the other three Superior species. On its own we bang it to shreds..
If you DIN are charedi, tell us who shouldn't be charedi? Louis Ginsburg? Sydney Hillman? Harry Wolfson? Gonen-Gorodish?
Din is charedi, aye?? Such a smirking farce! Even by his own dearest buddies Slifkin& ilk standards he won't be:They have always shouted we mustn't define a person by origin or educational background.. We must define and designate them only by attitudes and statements they're making now!
Villow,
Don't bother.He can't help himself

1)You didn't read the post; if you did, you wouldn't have made that asinine comment!
2) I deleted your comment defending the British; they were worse than the Nazis!
Who sends boats loaded with Jews back to Germany??
They just gave asylum to a terrorist yet refused to give asylum to Jews escaping to Palestine!
Yemach Shmom Ve'Zicrom
And no my parents weren't rescued from the Holocaust by the British; they were rescued by the Americans!
I am not a fan of Slifkin, he is a leftist!
Louis Ginsburg, Sydney Hillman, Harry Wolfson, were all ex Charedim living Galut, I live in Eretz Yisrael and I am presently a Charedie, I dress Charedie, i go to a Charedie Kollel and I am a true Charedie not a fake one, hence my blog exposing the fakes!
Gonen-Gorodish is responsible for the failure of the Yom Kippur war, which doesn't surprise me at all! He had the fake Charedie attitude, hence the utter failure!
This shmuck keeps changing his user-name and thinks that nobody realises. Go and play with that stump of a brain, you shtik drek. A genuine shtick fleisch mit zwei oigen
9:21pm pardon my dear,
This is the first time I've happened to this site and have posted possibly in more than a year [courtesy of my righteous colleague R'NS Leiter]
3:24 duizns,
Throwing tantrums is your character specialty. But no, you aren't charedi. Give up the farce, we will contently deal with the psychological devastation later
That you blocked my post/repost from elsewhere twice would surprise? 'twas a wild throw the dice, on the off chance it might get through to the third parties who ought to be given a fair balance.

Maybe you are right, maybe I am not a Charedie,
If I were a Charedie I would hate every single Jew that wasn't Charedie, I would have my children do damage to the Light Rail. I would have my children disrupt the lives of thousands of innocent Jews by blocking traffic; I would yell "Nazi" to other Jews; I would yell "shiksa" at someone else's daughter; I would beat the crap out of my Ponovitz Rosh Yeshiva called Feivelson, I would knock the daylights out of MK Porush, I would even hate my own community!
I would praise and support my Rosh Yeshiva that called Jewish children in uniform "rashaim" and "murderers:, I would hold in esteem my Rosh yeshiva that calls IDF fighters, who are Moiser Nefesh, "Garbage Cleaners, I would never work but expect the government to pour money into my parasite communities!
Maybe you are right, maybe I am NOT a Charedie,
Maybe I am a pashuta Jew that learns most of the day and has hakoras Hatoiv to the only Jewish country in the entire world!
and PS You are an unmitigated liar, you comment on this site many times! But thanks for following my blog
Humorous indeed..
Not quite sure what either of you find satisfying in your projectionism. That I condescended to visit..
Would you like witness testimony? No I have not been here in a quite a long while. Although various individuals [eg former colleague of yours Mr Y.T] have requested at intervals for myself to come on here and cut some of the rowdy immaturity down to size. And I have nearly always deferred as a waste of time.
And as for how you occupy yourself over the course of the day D.I.N. therein is the problem.
Find yourself something else to keep busy with.As stated:for many it devolved to sa'am ha'maves. And skip you &co. inevitable whataboutism. Since it is abused as a public cudgel it's no longer scoring you points in the Next World.
D.I.N. ,rolled ,
Of all the verbal character assassination that you derive adrenalin from, how did you come up with that one?
Which previous comment over the past year have you decided came from my personage?
p.s. whose learned accolades were superior yourself or Doeg Haedomi?
You complicated. And considering your collective blame attacks on all Charedim by fringe minorities, by your “logic” all your Dati Leumi buddies are lunatics who will go postal one day like Baruch Goldstein

"have requested at intervals for myself to come on here and cut some of the rowdy immaturity down to size"
LOL!
People requested that you come to "cut me down to size?"
LOL! Ha Ha! Bow wow!
They themselves can't, so they hire you to do it
Ha Ha!
OK ...Bring it on!

I see that Sinwar doesn't bother you, but a tzaddik who died al Kiddush Hashem Boruch Goldstein hy"d and b"h murdered, that subsequently turned out to be terrorists, he is a lunitic.
This my friends is Charedie thought process, Sinwar is their hero!
