In rare move, rabbis find nuptials were ‘a mistake’ as husband hid his criminal past; Chief Rabbinate says it won’t recognize measure and woman is still considered married

A private rabbinic court in Jerusalem has retroactively invalidated the marriage of woman who was refused a religious divorce by her husband, reasoning that if the wife had known of her husband’s violent criminal past she would not have married him in the first place, the Ynet website reported Monday.

The extremely rare move was made to release the woman from the marriage after her husband refused to grant her a get, or religious divorce.

Following several weeks of deliberations, the three-man panel convened in a Jerusalem synagogue on Sunday where they ruled the marriage was “a mistake.”

"How To Identify A Kosher Bird" 

The Torah itself itemizes all of the different species of un-kosher birds.

What should one do if one isn't familiar and cannot recognize the birds that are mentioned in the Torah that are un-kosher and cannot distinguish which birds are kosher?

So the rabbis gave us distinct characteristics of birds so that even a novice could distinguish which birds are kosher and which ones are not. 

For example, a bird that is a predator and consumes its prey alive, is an un-kosher bird.

A bird that eats food thrown in the air is considered a דורס .. a predator and that bird is not kosher.

If we find a bird that doesn't have the characteristics just mentioned, we must then examine it to see if it has any of the kosher characteristics. 

Which are:

(1) An extra finger

(2) A crop, זפק, that is the place where the bird stores what it has eaten before its digested.

(3) And finally, If one can easily peel off the outer membrane of the gizzard without having to use a knife.

A study released by Westchester-based Consumer Reports this week found that there was measurable levels of cadmium, inorganic arsenic, mercury or lead found in every single one of 45 juice products it tested from major brands sold across the country. Of those 45 juices tested, approximately half had “concerning” levels of metals.

Consumer Reports, headquartered in Yonkers, tested apple, grape and pear and fruit blends of juices that are found in both local and national retailers. According to the report, Consumer Reports chief science officer said that, “in some cases, drinking just four ounces a day - or half a cup - is enough to raise concerns.”

Israel advances controversial cable car to Kotel

Israel’s National Planning Council is formally advancing a controversial plan to build a cable car that will cross over Jerusalem’s historic Hinnom Valley and glide along the Old City walls to an area near the Western Wall.

The council will publish its approval of the plan in newspapers Friday, kicking off a 60-day public comment period before the scheme is brought for final approval.

The cable car is billed as a tourism attraction as well as a solution to serious traffic congestion and pollution around the Old City walls.

Up to 3,000 people will be ferried per hour at peak time in up to 72 10-person cabins between the First Station commercial area and the Old City’s Dung Gate, near the Western Wall.
