In a rare primetime speech, President Biden trashed the millions of Trump supporters who call themselves MAGA Republicans.
In the divisive speech, Biden the self-proclaimed “unifier” accused MAGA supporters of an “extreme ideology” that essentially threatens “the very foundations of our republic.”
In addition, some were outraged that the stage design and tone of the speech was reminiscent of evil regimes like the Nazis.
Biden’s appearance in Philadelphia, near Independence Hall, was promoted as an official, taxpayer-funded event, and the administration claimed it was not a political speech.
“Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic,” Biden said.
“There is no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven, and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans, and that is a threat to this country,” the Democrat said.
He accused Trump and “MAGA Republicans” of wanting to “destroy American democracy,” and called upon people to “confront extremists”.
Biden’s speech was clearly designed as a propaganda tool, to depict Trump and his tens of millions of supporters as radical extremists who are prone to violence.
He made 11 references to “violence,” saying that it “can never be an acceptable [political] tool.”
In one instance, he accused MAGA followers of having “wild conspiracy theories.”
Biden also claimed that the relatively miniscule number of people who breached the Capitol are considered by the “MAGA Republicans” as patriots. Trump, his administration, and many Republicans condemned the violence at the U.S. Capitol.
“MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards—backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy…no right to marry who you love,” Biden said.
Multiple Republicans blasted Biden’s vicious and incendiary rhetoric.
House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy said on Twitter that Biden “owe[s] millions of Americans an apology,” adding, “Instead of trying to bring our country together to solve the MANY problems he has created, President Biden has chosen to divide, demean, and disparage his fellow Americans—simply because they disagree with his policies.”
Sen. Marco Rubio wrote: “Angry man smears half of the people of the country he is supposed to lead & promised to unite.”
Senator Ted Cruz said that Biden’s speech was “divisive” and “angry,” and accused Biden of being “only interested [in] pitting his fellow Americans against one another.”
