I don't buy his story. He insists he is sincere in his Jewish practice - but how can that be? He knows that a non-Jew (which he is) cannot have a Jewish wife. In fact, he really does not have an interest in being a genuine, religious Jew. He has already defiled his "wife" and has wreaked havoc on an entire family and community. He should just sneak away and start a new life. Study Judaism if you like - but spare the family who you have so hurt and offended.
His greatest sin was his lie. Had he said he wants to convert he would have been accepted. Not by the syrian community but by others and he could have become a Jew. I believe the only sin the Torah said to keep away from is lying. Midvar sheker tirchak. Had he kept it he would have made it.
