Berel Raskin Famous Fish Monger From Crown Heights Passes Away At 84

 Rabbi Berel (Berke) Raskin , the Crown Heights icon who owned a world renowned fish store on Kingston Ave, passed away Shabbos, the 20th of Iyar 5779.

He was 84 years old.

Berel, one of four brothers, was born in Leningrad to his parents, Reb Aaron Leib Laine and Doba Raiza Raskin, who had much mesiras nefesh for Yiddishkeit in Communist Russia.

His father passed away at the young age of 36, leaving the family to be sustained by his mother. She traveled with her family initially to Poland, then Austria, and finally Paris.

From there, Mrs. Raskin wrote to the Frierdiker Rebbe, asking whether they should seek entry to Israel or to America. The Rebbe advised them to travel to America, and in 1953 they arrived in New York.

When Berel looked to start a business, he soon decided on opening a fish store, with the Rebbe’s encouragement. He rented the store on Kingston Avenue, where the business is run from until today.

He is survived by his wife Esther Raskin, and his children Aaron Leib Raskin (Crown Heights), Yossi Raskin (Crown Heights), Shloime Raskin (Crown Heights), Brocha Richler (Los Angeles, CA), Bassie Komar (Crown Heights), Chanie Greene (Rochester, MN), Doba Rimler (Crown Heights) and Shaina Moss (Israel), and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brothers Michel Raskin (Crown Heights), Dovid Laine (Crown Heights), and Benzion Raskin (Crown Heights.

The Levaya will be held at shomrei hadas at 12:30pm, and will be passing 770 at 1:30pm.

The survival of the mullah regime in Tehran will be impossible in the long run, so long as its formal objective remains to use all of its resources to fulfill the will of its founder, Khomeini, and reinstate the ancient Persian Empire.

I am not trying to suggest that the era of empires is completely over. This is a reality that one can hardly argue with, especially given the rise of the caliphate established by Islamic State.

I do, however, believe that [former] US president Barack Obama, for a mysterious reason that goes beyond me, saved the mullah regime from total collapse when he signed the catastrophic nuclear deal with Tehran. In doing so, Obama lifted the siege on Iran and provided its regime, which was very close to falling, with a $100 billion lifeline.

Whatever ideology is guiding the mullahs, their regime simply cannot keep up with the contemporary world. It stands against everything humanity stands up for today.

Even domestically, the people of Iran have realized that they have been led astray by their leaders for several decades. Internal grudges and anger are growing with each passing day. 

This enormous Iranian public will eventually reach a boiling point that the regime will be unable to control. No matter how oppressive, cruel or coercive the mullah regime will be, it will eventually be forced to capitulate and collapse.

Needless to say, modern countries derive their political and military power from their economic power. The stronger their economies are, the more they can grow and develop, the more legitimate they are on the international stage, and the more they can withstand crises.

A look at the Soviet Union, which neglected its economic might and relied on socialism for its survival, will suffice to understand how failed economies can lead to political disintegration and collapse.

This is certainly the case in Iran as well. The mullahs can spend money spreading their ideology, ignore economic growth and impose their doctrine on others, without any hesitation to crush dissidents. Ultimately, however, their regime will be a failure.

Therefore, whether the mullahs admit this or not, Iran is on a direct trajectory to becoming a failed state. This tendency will only increase with time. Then, as many experiments in history have already taught us, the mullahs’ regime will collapse. It is simply a matter of time.

“It’s a Shlomo Shabbos.” 
Anyone living in Israel in the 1980s and early 1990s who was part of the religious counterculture, from wayward haredim in Jerusalem to hippies in Pardes Chana, knew what that meant. 

It meant that Shlomo Carlebach would be on Moshav Me’or Modiim for Shabbat, a frequent event that would attract a plethora of Jews (and some non-Jews) to an impromptu Shabbat retreat. By Friday afternoon people began arriving, in cars, vans, taxis, hitchhiking and on foot, looking for a place to crash, often setting up tents in backyards and the nearby Ben Shemen forest that buttressed the moshav. Later on, guest-houses were established to house the fellow-travelers for a small fee. It was a kind of bi-monthly mini-Woodstock with only one musical performance, Shlomo davening.

Satmar Kicks Willie Handler To The Curb!

Recently, hundreds of anti-vaxxers gathered at an event in Monsey. Lacking any legitimate Rabbonim to address the gathering, the audience was privileged to hear from a dishonest conspiracy-theorist claiming to be a Rabbi.

Willie "the Liar" Handler used to be the Satmar Spokesman and he was the one who supported Yisroel Weingarten, who was convicted for raping his own daughter.

Willie, was the one who called Rabbonim who disagreed with him "lightweights" and now the very ones who had him be their spokesman, threw him under the bus........

But since Handler was the “Rabbi” at this event, the NY Times made sure to quote himin their coverage of this event. Disgustingly, Handler used inflammatory words about elected officials – such as describing NYC Mayor DeBlasio as a “sneaky fellow” and a closet German – “Wilhelm, his real name, was named after Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany.”

(In fact, none of this is true. Mr. de Blasio was born Warren Wilhelm Jr., and later decided to take his mother’s last name as his own after becoming alienated from his father.)

Khal Yetev Lev D’Satmar, the main Satmar congregation located in Williamsburg, issued a declaration – published in today’s issue of Der Yid – condemning in the strongest possible terms the inflammatory, misguided and wrong rhetoric by Rabbi Hillel Handler at the anti-vax symposium. The congregation further declared that the Rebbe has ordered everyone to vaccinate.

This declaration, published in this week’s Der Yid, is an unprecedented rebuke of the anti-vax movement, coming from the largest Chasidic community and publicizing the Grand Rebbe’s directive to vaccinate. It’s also very significant, since some reports depicted Handler as being affiliated with Satmar. In fact, he has no role in the Satmar community.

Condemnation and Clarification

Regarding the reports that many people gathered to speak in the name of the New York Haredi communities against the laws and government directives regarding health, and especially regarding vaccines to save our kids that the measles the disease shouldn’t spread – Go-d forbid – and we were shocked by the words at this gathering to attack our city government and shaming and fighting words against the mayor of our great city New York full of lies and falsehoods, and they also cause a chilul hashem (defamation of G-d’s name) and his Torah in the eyes of the nations,

Therefore, we are condemning in the strongest terms, and we are announcing that these words are against our position, and it doesn’t represent us in any way or form. To the Contrary, we are obligated to follow the words of the prophet that you should ask for the wellbeing of the city and you shall pray for it, as our holy Rebbe OBM constantly guided us.

And to the core of the matter, it’s widely known that our holy mosdos (school system), following the directives of the Rebbe Shlit”a, issued strong instructions that parents must have their children vaccinated in accordance with the city government’s orders and in accordance with the advice of doctors and experts in these matters. The great Beth Din of Yerushalayim Edah HaCharedit also issued a public directive that everyone must – because of the Mitzva of Vnismartem M’eod L’nafshoseichem (the Torah commandment to protect yourself) – to listen to the advice of doctors in order that the measles and other illnesses shouldn’t spread, Go-d forbid. The administration of our schools are standing guard that children that do not have the MMR vaccine should not be in our schools now in accordance with the law and the government advisories.

We are signing with anguish regarding the words that were said and the resulting chilul hashem.

Above Photo Shows Nazi Coward Beating a Jewish Child

The Warsaw Ghetto was the largest of its kind in Europe - but the story of its inhabitants has always been told using Nazi footage, until now. 

Never-before-seen footage shot by amateur Polish filmmaker Alfons Ziolkowski in 1941 shows what life was like for Jews inside the ghetto - from children smuggling food, to a dying man on the sidewalk, to Nazi guards dishing out beatings.

The 10-minute film is the only known footage of the ghetto that was not recorded by Nazis, and provides an invaluable historical record of the Jewish experience there.

The black-and-white footage of the Jewish quarter is included in a new hour-long film 'Warsaw: A City Divided' by Polish-Canadian director Eric Bednarski.

Mr Bednarski said: 'The film footage many of us have seen from the Warsaw Ghetto was shot in 1942 by a Nazi German propaganda film crew. 

'Their work has been used in literally dozens of documentaries about the Holocaust and the Second World War. 

'It was shot from the perspective of occupiers and perpetrators, and was used for anti-Semitic propaganda purposes. 

The footage that appears in my documentary was shot by a Pole, with a completely different perspective. 

'This is the first known non-Nazi, non-propaganda footage from the Warsaw Ghetto.'

Scores of police in Jerusalem backed up by officers on horseback trying to break up an ultra-Orthodox street protest Saturday got some help from an unexpected quarter — women who took their tops off, driving away the protesters, who are religiously forbidden from looking at them.

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox men and boys clashed with police Saturday afternoon, blocking traffic and attacking officers during a protest against Shabbat transgression by workers preparing the Eurovision Song Contest final in Tel Aviv on the Jewish day of rest.

As protesters blocked roads beside an ultra-Orthodox area in the center of the city, at least four women stripped down to their bras, forcing the protesters to leave the area due to the prohibition against looking at women in dress deemed immodest.

Although the broadcast of the Eurovision finale started after the Sabbath,  rehearsals and production preparations took place earlier in the day. The issuing of work permits for the event led an ultra-Orthodox political party to temporarily suspend coalition negotiations and sparked the Saturday protest in the capital.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews strictly respect religious law prohibiting work on Shabbat, the weekly day of rest, from sundown Friday until nightfall Saturday.

Ahead of the Eurovision final, one of Israel’s chief rabbis called for those who keep Shabbat to extend their observance of the holy day by 20 minutes in response to the “great desecration.”

Some ultra-Orthodox Jews object to photos of women, even when clothed, in public places or media on grounds of modesty. For decades there have been repeated incidents of posters featuring women defaced in the capital and other cities.

On Tuesday afternoon, Charedi journalist Yair Sharki publicized a dramatic turn of events in the Chareidi Litvish world. 

According to Sharki, a new Chareidi newspaper is set to be published by the name HaDegel. The paper will be published under the auspices of Hagaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky and will take the place of Yated Ne’eman. The first edition is set to be released around Shavuos.

Sharki took to Twitter to explain just how groundbreaking such a move is.

“In order to explain just how dramatic opening a new newspaper is in the Charedi community: 

When Rav Shach separated from Agudas Yisroel and built Degel Hatorah, the first thing he did was open the newspaper Yated Neeman.  When Rav Shmuel Auerbach left Degel Hatorah and opened up the Peleg Yerushalmi the first thing he did was open the newspaper Hapeles. This is the first condition of political independence.”

Sharki then answered a question that was asked on the above hypothesis. 

“This time, Rav Kanievsky isn’t leaving anything and is pretty much the mainstream. However, the decision to open a new newspaper instead of attempting to reign in Yated Neeman (as Maran Hagaon HaRav Shteinman did in his day) points to the internal power struggles and the internal opposition present, which is very strong, and left him with no other choice.”

Over the past few years, letters have been sent back and forth between the main power of ownership of Yated Neeman, U.S. businessman Shimon Glick and HaRav Kanievsky, each one pointing towards the difference of opinions between the two with regards to how the paper should be run. 

In light of that, and Yated Ne’eman perhaps losing their religious supervision, the new newspaper was born. The birth pangs of the new paper is a reflection of the infighting between the media moguls of Yated Ne’eman and the leaders of the Degel Hatorah movement. With this new beginning, a strong statement of disavowment is being made by Rav Kanievsky and his leadership towards Yated Ne’eman.

Reform Jews Invite Al Sharpton, inciter of the Violent Murderous Pogrom Against Jews in Crown Heights ....

The disgraceful decision by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism to have Al Sharpton speak this morning at a plenary session of its conference in Washington, D.C., (titled “Consultation on Conscience”) sends a very dangerous and intolerable message to the anti-Semites among us.

Anti-Semitism is on the rise, not just in the form of shouts or graffiti but also the murder of Jews. It is thus incomprehensible how the Religious Action Center could have ever made this decision.

The advertising material promoting this event describes Sharpton as “founder and President of the National Action Network … a not-for-profit civil rights organization that was formed in 1991 … one of the nation’s most renowned civil rights leaders."

We remember Al Sharpton for what he did in 1991. It was in August of that year that he led violent, murderous anti-Semitic rioters on a pogrom in Crown Heights. They terrorized that Jewish community for nearly four days, during which 183 people were injured and the innocent visiting Australian University academic Yankel Rosenbaum — brother to one of us — was murdered in cold blood amid cries of “Kill the Jew! Kill the Jew!”

The Confusion of the Satmar Lag Be'Omer Bon-Fire" in Monroe!!

Before R' Aron Teitelbaum became Monroe Satmar Rebbe, he was the Rosh Yeshivah of Satmar Yeshivah in Monroe.

At the time, there were no "Hadlakas" Bon-Fires in Satmar on Lag Be'Omer because they didn't have that "mesorah."

Satmar boys, like all boys, need entertainment, so they ran to other Rebbes to witness and to celebrate Lag Be'omer, celebrations that had huge "hadlakas," some ran to Chabad where Lag Be'Omer is a huge day and some even ran to Meron in Israel. 

This did not fair well with the Rosh Yeshivah, because he was frightened that the boys would find other Chassidic sects desirable, and would leave Satmar altogether.

So one year the then Rosh Yeshivah, R' Aron Teitelbaum, decided to gather all the boys a couple of weeks prior to Lag Be'Omer for an "asifah" to warn and threaten any boy that went to any Lag Be'omer celebrations with expulsion ... כדרכו בקודש!

His reasoning at the "asifah" was two-fold ....

Number one, this wasn't a "mesorah" in Satmar.....

and number two .... Lag Ba'omer is not a "Chutz Le'aaretz Yom Tov;" its an exclusive "Israeli Yom Tov" because  Eretz Yisroel does not  have two days of Yom Tov,  he reasoned, .... the gedoilim of Eretz Yisroel must have found it proper to make an additional Yom Tov called "Lag Be'Omer!"

A Buba Mieseh!

When he became Rebbe ... he changed his tune.....

  His gaboim, in a panic, were telling him that the majority of his chassidim are leaving Monroe on Lag Be'Omer to celebrate ...... yes..... the New Israeli Holiday!

Instead of making an "asifah" to explain the new Satmar minhag of making a huge Bon-Fire on Lag Be'Omer, which everyone would understand, he remained quiet, hoping that no one would remember that he barked against this not too long ago!

His brother, R' Zalman Leib, Satmar Rebbe of Williamsburg doesn't practice this new Satmar custom and does not make an hadlaka ...

I guess he isn't frightened that his chasidim after having celebrated an hadlaka with some other rebbeleh would leave him!
