Bereaved mother: 'Soldiers are killed, and people hide behind the Torah'

Laly Deri, who lost her son in Gaza, passionately calls for an end to yeshiva exemptions, urging the Haredi community to prioritize national service amid Israel’s existential threats.

During a panel discussion at the Ynet, Yedioth Ahronoth, and Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) Defense and Service Conference, Laly Deri, whose son, Saadia, fell in battle in Gaza, spoke out against the policy of exempting yeshiva students from military service.

"In a normal, moral, Jewish, ethical world, the first that need to go to battle are the yeshiva students," Deri said at the start of the panel.

Later in the discussion, she criticized the use of Torah study as a reason to be exempted from service: "It drives me crazy, when there are families that are being worn out and soldiers who are killed, and people hide behind the Torah... It is the biggest disgrace of G-d's name that I can hear."

She added: "The haredi public needs to hear this voice. You are wrong, you are going against the Torah."

According to Deri, the haredi public is changing, "This public is exposed to characters such as Saadia, such as Rabbi Yossi Goldberg, such as so many soldiers, and that's changing something.

"Today, there is an existential threat to the country, and we don't have time for long processes. Every 18-year-old boy and girl must serve the country in some manner, first of all in the military, since there's an existential threat, and after that in civil service in the various realms."

Why should loimdei Torah be the first? Even DIN hasn’t added that odd demand to his list of outbursts. Sorry for her loss, but she needs to get a grip

" Loimdei Torah" comes first because in that very Torah it says:
לא תעמוד על דם רעך

Don't the haredim that avoid the army read the weekly parshiot that explicitly discuss who goes into the army? If Torat Eretz Yisrael is intertwined with Eretz Yisrael, how can they possibly rationalize not participating in protecting Eretz Yisrael?

Because the halakha is very picky on who shold go out to battle. Only the most virtuous soldiers should be sent and even minor sins can disqualify a soldier from receiving God's protection during battle. That's the halakha. Yet here the self-described "guardians of the faith" who wax endlessly about "the purity of the camp" violate Hillel's maxim against using the Torah for personal benefit.

There's a whole lot more chiloni guys all over the country who refuse to participate in the army, and you won’t see this in the news.

Because they are cowards and do not believe in the Providence of HKB"H, so they use the Torah to hide behind.

She makes a valid point. In a normal, moral, Jewish, ethical world, the Army would be part of avodas Hashem, and a seamless transfer from Yeshiva.
It is precisely because the state is mostly godless, and any religion is a concession more than a natural expression of Judaism, that those who wish to live a 'lechatchila' life of Torah don't belong in the Army.

That is not actually the halacha, sending the most "virtuous" was only in the war that Moshe led, after that they took even ovdei avoda zara, if you learn Yehoshua, Shoiftim and Shmuel, all those recruited in the armies had nothing to do with being "virtuous"
In fact even by Moshe, where the Torah gives certain exemptions, learning Torah was not an exemption!

Chilonim didn't learn the pasuk
Charedim did amd they are openly violating a mitzvas esseh min Hatorah with the approval of the rabbis
לא תעמוד על דם רעך

Your argument makes absolutely no sense and it is nonsense regurgitated, hoping that some naive stooge will believe it!
95% of all Jewish governments after Shlomo were godless! Even during the period of the shoitim, the majority were godless! Everyone went to the army!

This is actually the best government we ever had in Jewish history, why don't you open a Tanach? Are you afraid to learn the truth?
There is a mitzvas esseh in the Torah that states unequivocally:
לא תעמוד על דם רעך
That goes for ALL Jews including Rav Landau!
