After a night in prison, husband grants get to estranged wife

A man who has refused for the past four years to give a get (halakhic divorce) to his wife was picked up seemingly by chance at a police checkpoint on Monday in the region of Modi’in, Behadrey Haredim reports. Finding that there was an arrest warrant for the man, they transferred him to police detention – and the next day, he agreed to grant his wife the coveted get.

The saga began four years ago, when the couple decided, for various reasons, to separate. Two years ago, they reached a divorce settlement but the husband subsequently changed his mind and refused to go through with it. The Rabbinic Court ruled that the husband was to grant a get and provide support to his wife, but the husband instead appealed to the Beit Din Hagadol (Rabbinic High Court) and agreed to an adapted settlement with his wife. However, yet again, he changed his mind and refused to go through with it.

At this point, the Yad Le’Isha organization, representing the wife, entered the picture. Their attorney, Tehila Cohen, approached the Rabbinical Court five weeks ago and demanded that the husband be coerced into granting a get, and the Court agreed. The police were involved and an arrest warrant was issued.

According to the report, the husband then told his children that their mother was pursuing him and he fled. He was picked up apparently by chance at a police checkpoint and transferred to prison. The next day, he agreed to grant his wife an unconditional get.

Approached for comment, the wife was effusive in her praise for Yad Le’Isha and attorney Cohen. “I endured this situation for four years, and for the last few months, Tehila Cohen went all-out to free me,” she said. “I am so grateful for her expertise and dedication.”

Yad Le’Isha’s director, Penina Omer, thanked the Rabbinical Court headed by Rabbi Bezek for his support, as well as the secretaries of the Rabbinical Courts of Tiberias and Tzfat. “We are constantly hearing stories of women subject to extortion in order to receive a get,” she said. “I appeal to the rabbis to find a halakhic solution to this problem and take responsibility for this situation.”

The husband was apparently not approached for comment.

This is not the first time that Yad Le’Isha has been involved in persuading Rabbinical Courts to use coercive measures to force husbands to grant their wives halakhic divorces, without which they cannot remarry according to Torah law. The use of coercion to “persuade” a husband to give a get is extremely controversial among Torah scholars, and many rabbinic authorities insist that such a coerced divorce is no divorce at all and that the woman remains married and any subsequent “remarriage” is an adulterous relationship – hence the appeal of Yad Le’Isha’s director for a halakhic solution.

CIA Director Gina Haspel Banking On Trump Loss To Keep Russiagate Documents Hidden

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Gina Haspel is personally blocking the declassification and release of key Russiagate documents in the hopes that President Donald Trump will lose his re-election bid, multiple senior U.S. officials told The Federalist.

The officials said Haspel, who served under former CIA Director John Brennan as the spy agency’s station chief in London in 2016 and 2017, is concerned that the declassification and release of documents detailing what the CIA was doing during the 2016 election and the 2017 transition could embarrass the CIA and potentially even implicate Haspel herself.

“Haspel and [FBI Director Christopher] Wray both want Trump to lose, because it’s the only chance they have of keeping their jobs,” one senior intelligence official told The Federalist. “They’re banking on Biden winning and keeping them where they are.”

NYC Orthodox community holds large protest over new coronavirus restrictions

Hundreds of members of the Borough Park Orthodox community took to the streets Tuesday night defying orders to disperse and lighting a fire in protest of new state mandated restrictions imposed on area synagogues, schools and non-essential businesses over a COVID-19 surge.

One large crowd huddled closely together at the corner of 50th Street and 15th avenue at about 9 p.m. as community activist Heshy Tischler ripped Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio over the order that shuts down schools completely and limits houses of worship to 10 people in certain COVID-19 hot spots.

Much of Borough Park is subject to those measures — the most restrictive  — which also shutters non-essential businesses. The level of restrictions, broken down into three color-coded categories, are guided by coronavirus diagnosis data.

“It’s called civil disobedience, we can fight back,” Tischler told the crowd after tearing up his face mask. “Do not allow them to torture you or scare you,” he said, referring to the elected officials.

The closures must be made no later than Friday — though a spokesman for de Blasio tweeted that they would likely begin Thursday — and run for at least two weeks.

Councilman Kalman Yeger later showed up at another protest on 13th Avenue, according to Boro Park News.

There, the lawmaker told the crowd: “We are not going to be deprived of the right that we have in America, like everybody else in America, the right to observe our religion.”

The protests swarmed in numbers later in the night with demonstrators shutting down 13th Avenue to vehicular traffic.

Things also turned unruly when the crowd lit a rubbish fire after midnight at the intersection of 46th Street and 13th Avenue and chased away two city sheriff’s deputies who responded.

The defiant crowd chanted “Jewish lives matter,” as they held their ground.

Earlier in the night, Yeger was among four local Jewish lawmakers who released a joint statement slamming Gov. Cuomo over the edict.

“We are appalled by Governor Cuomo’s words and actions today. He has chosen to pursue a scientifically and constitutionally questionable shutdown of our communities,” said the statement from Yeger, State Sen. Simcha Felder, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein and Councilman Chaim Deutsch.

“His administration’s utter lack of coordination and communication with local officials has been an ongoing issue since the start of the pandemic, and particularly recently as we face this uptick.”

The lawmakers said that even though they represent COVID-19 hot-spot neighborhoods, the Cuomo administration has left in the dark leading up to Tuesday’s decision.

Also brought up by the legislators, was Cuomo’s choice to display PowerPoint images of New York’s Jewish community gathering en masse during his Monday press briefing.

“Governor Cuomo’s choice to single out a particular religious group, complete with a slideshow of photos to highlight his point, was outrageous.

“His language was dangerous and divisive, and left the implication that Orthodox Jews alone are responsible for rising COVID cases in New York State,” the elected officials said.

In A New Low ......The Jewish Democratic Council Releases Kaddish Ad, Blasting Trump

The political action committee of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, JDCA PAC, in a new low for any political organization, released a despicable ad on Tuesday featuring the Jewish mourner’s Kaddish in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s  actions and video statements about COVID-19 after he returned to the White House on Monday. The president had spent three nights at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center being treated for symptoms associated with the coronavirus.

The jarring bizarre ad features a photo of a stone about to be put on top of a grave marker that already consists of stones on top of it, in lieu of flowers and in accordance with Jewish tradition.

Alongside the Kaddish being recited is audio of Trump’s past statements on the pandemic, such as “It is what it is,” as an increasing number of COVID-19 deaths flash across the screen. To date, more than 7.7 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with COVID-19 with nearly 215,000 recorded deaths as a result of the highly infectious disease.

The ad ends with the word “VOTE” at the conclusion of the Kaddish.

Agudath Takes Action Against Cuomo and Files Court Injunction After Limitations Placed On Shuls

Governor Cuomo’s surprise mass closure announcement today, and limit of 10 individuals per house of worship in “red zones,” is appalling to all people of religion and good faith.

We have been down this path before, when religious practices were targeted for special treatment by the Governor’s Executive Order in May.

A suit was filed challenging the Governor’s Order then (in which Agudath Israel filed an amicus brief), and the court found it unconstitutional. Repeating unconstitutional behavior does not make it lawful.

Moreover, it should be made clear that the Governor’s reference to a “good conversation” he had earlier today with a group of Orthodox Jewish leaders was largely a one-way monologue, and contained no mention of this new plan.

Agudath Israel intends to explore all appropriate measures to undo this deeply offensive action.

A final message to our community: We have considerable concerns that Governor Cuomo’s capricious actions will weaken compliance with good health practices. We cannot allow our – perhaps justifiable – anger at government to imperil our neighbors’ health.

Former Saudi spy chief: Palestinian leaders have been ‘failures’ for 70 years

Palestinian leaders are “failures” who have consistently missed opportunities for a settlement with Israel and who are aligning themselves with the enemies of Saudi Arabia, former Saudi intelligence chief Bandar bin Sultan said in an interview with Saudi-owned al-Arabiya TV that aired Monday.

“The Palestinian cause is a just cause, but its advocates are failures. The Israeli cause is unjust, but its advocates are successful. That sums up the events of the last 70 or 75 years,” bin Sultan said.

Bin Sultan served as the Saudi ambassador in Washington for over 30 years, as well as in several high-level intelligence positions after his return to Riyadh. He led Saudi Arabia’s security services from 2012 to 2014, also directing the Saudi National Security Council for over a decade.

In scathing statements on al-Arabiya — a 40-minute lecture, complete with archival footage — bin Sultan discussed the history of Saudi-Palestinian relations. He harshly criticized the Palestinian leadership for what he deemed to be repeated missed opportunities to reach an accord with Israel, and for taking Saudi aid while ignoring Saudi political counsel.

“I believe that we in Saudi Arabia, acting on our goodwill, have always been there for them. Whenever they asked for advice and help, we would provide them with both without expecting anything in return, but they would take the help and ignore the advice. Then they would fail and turn back to us again, and we would support them again, regardless of their mistakes,” bin Sultan said.
