Frank Caprio, the Rhode Island judge who became a viral sensation for his kindness and understanding in the courtroom, has died at 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Caprio gained worldwide attention in 2017 when videos showed him helping people with traffic tickets in Providence, calling children to the bench to participate in judgments, encouraging students to attend college in exchange for dropped fines, and arranging payment plans for those struggling financially.
“Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond,” an Instagram post on his official account read. Less than a day before his passing, Caprio shared a video asking for prayers, smiling softly throughout.
Reflecting on his approach, Caprio once said, “I don’t wear a badge under my robe. I wear a heart under my robe,” emphasizing the importance of understanding individual circumstances rather than strict enforcement alone.
