New Frum Summer Camp Will Not Allow Anyone That's Vaccinated

With summer coming and COVID-19 vaccines being deemed safe for children as young as 12, some camps are talking about the possibility of a mask-free summer for vaccinated campers.

But one Jewish camp being planned for the summer is taking a different approach: barring any vaccinated camper or staff from attending at all.

Advertisements for Camp Hikon, planned for upstate New York, appeared on email listservs popular in the Orthodox Jewish community just days after a private school in Miami made news for discouraging teachers from getting the vaccine and telling children they were not to have contact with vaccinated people.

The camp’s announcement also comes as posters encouraging people not to get the COVID-19 vaccines appeared in Midwood, Brooklyn, the Orthodox neighborhood where one member of the founding team runs a natural foods store.

The developments suggest that anti-vaccination sentiment and COVID-19 misinformation are taking new forms in Jewish communities where skepticism and non-compliance with public health regulations has been relatively high.

Camp Hikon is aiming to prepare yeshiva boys for what it calls the “political, environmental and economic” changes to come. Despite its stated interest in preparing campers for “natural disasters,” it will not allow any vaccinated campers or staff to attend.

Naftali Schwartz, the Brooklyn-based self-described “health coach” with no formal training in medicine or public health who is launching the camp, said the rule is unlikely to keep anybody away.

“Because of the kinds of demographic that I’m drawing from, most people who are coming will not have taken the vaccine,” Schwartz told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Drawing on a debunked theory spread by the anti-vaccination movement, the camp’s website cites the “experimental nature” of the COVID-19 vaccines. According to the false theory, living in close quarters with vaccinated people could “enhance” the spread of the coronavirus. The website refers readers to a site calledNutriTruth, which claims vaccines are a “biological weapon,” and to a livestreamed discussion between several notable anti-vaxxers.

“We regret that we will be unable to accept campers or counselors who have already received any of these injections,” according to the website.

Schwartz said he made the rule because of “suspicious symptoms that occur to unvaccinated people who have spent a lot of time in the company of vaccinated people.”

“It’s also been reported to me from parents of my to-be campers that this is a real thing and it’s worrisome,” Schwartz said.

The idea that unvaccinated people can be harmed by spending time with people who have received the COVID vaccines is not true. Vaccinated people cannot shed particles from the vaccine that would affect someone in their vicinity.

Other debunked theories were listed on posters that appeared this week in Midwood, a heavily Orthodox neighborhood in Brooklyn. The posters, which were unsigned, discouraged Orthodox Jews from being vaccinated due to potential risks to fertility (another debunked theory), among other reasons.

“Many, many Rabbonim who have thoroughly researched the COVID vaccine are urgently saying NOT to take it,” one flyer read, using the Yiddish word for rabbis.

The flyer included a link to an online pamphlet with the names of rabbis who have allegedly come out against the coronavirus vaccines. It also promoted medications for the treatment of COVID-19 such as hydroxychloroquine that studies have shown to be ineffective. The medication had been promoted by Dr. Vladimir Zelenko, an Orthodox physician who, until last summer, worked in the hasidic enclave of Kiryas Joel and whose treatment protocol was promoted by Donald Trump when he was president.

The online pamphlet claimed that people did not die because of the coronavirus. “They died either from lack of proper treatment of corona, or from other neglect or improper treatment at the hospital,” the pamphlet said.

According to COVID vaccination data from the New York City Department of Health, only 18% of residents in Borough Park are fully vaccinated with 28% partially vaccinated. In Midwood, only 22% of residents are fully vaccinated and 30% partially vaccinated. By comparison, among residents of the Upper West Side’s 10024 zip code, one of the more highly vaccinated areas of the city, 54% of residents are fully vaccinated and 65% are partially vaccinated.

Whether Camp Hikon actually gets off the ground remains to be seen. So far, no children are signed up and Schwartz has yet to obtain a permit to operate the camp.

But he has a clear vision of what will happen there. Masks will not be encouraged at the camp; as to how the camp would fight the spread of COVID-19, campers would be treated “with an abundance of vitamin D and other prophylaxis,” according to the website.

The camp appears to combine survivalist training with Torah study. The primary goal of the camp, Schwartz said, is to prepare campers for a future in which political instability, economic instability and unusual weather events could create supply chain issues that would interfere with everyday life.

Campers will build their own shelters, according to the website, and the camp plans to provide special footwear intended for survival settings.

“We’re catering to a demographic of families that are awake, who understand that the years in the future will not be similar to years in the past,” Schwartz said.

Haredi parties to Bennett: Don't form a govt. that hates haredim

Shas chairman and Interior Minister Aryeh Deri responded tonight (Thursday) to Naftali Bennett's intention to form a unity government with the left-wing parties and Yair Lapid.

''For a whole month we have done everything, even giving up our honor, so that we can form a right-wing government as we promised our voters. We were not looking for positions. We did not ask for roles. We agreed to give Bennett the go-ahead so that Yamina, which promised to form a right-wing government, could join," Deri said.

"I say with certainty: if Naftali and 'Yamina' had come with us with the bloc, we would have reached 61 seats or more. All that was missing was the agreement. There was a draft agreement. Unfortunately, Naftali did not do that," said the Shas chairman.

Deri continued: "We came on behalf of the haredi public to say that we are very concerned that Avigdor Liberman, the biggest persecutor of the religious, is supposed to be the finance minister. We are concerned that Meretz and Meirav Michaeli and Yesh Atid are the majority in this government. We are very worried about what will happen to the Jewish character of the State of Israel."

"We are anxious about what will happen to the world of Torah, to the settlements. I turn to you Naftali, we have reached an almost signed agreement. There are 28 days, it will not lead to an election, a right-wing government will be established - once they knew there was no option for a left-wing government. I know there's blood in the middle but you know we're not a side. "Do not break the connection between the haredim and what you represent," the Shas chairman asked.

United Torah Judaism chairman MK Moshe Gafni, said in a statement at the Knesset: "The haredi public knows how to win and not be haughty. We know how to lose and not give up. We do not tolerate thinking that we are stupid. Bennett is negotiating with Lapid to form a government that is a hate government, an anti-religious government. And he and Shaked come and say they have turned over stone upon stone to form a right-wing government. Why are you lying to us?"

Gafni sharply attacked Bennett: "He has done this to us once, he and Shaked who went with Lapid. what did you do? This is going to be an anti-land of Israel government. You preached to me 'the leftist,' you preached to me morality about the land of Israel, but what will this government do? What will Horowitz do? What will Michaeli do? Will they guard the Land of Israel? This is going to be an anti-religious government."

"Am I supposed to trust Bennett to protect the land of Israel or religion? But we know the truth. I agree with Mr. Deri's interpretation. Don't believe when they say about me that I'm a leftist. For 33 years I have gone only with the right. The hatred between Bibi and Bennett and this storm is more important than the Land of Israel and the Holy Torah."

US Navy chaplain calls on Jews to apologize for killing Jesus

It's not enough that they killed millions of Jews in the name of Jesus, now they want us to apologise.

Doesn't it stand to reason that he would have been dead by now anyway? And why do they suddenly care that a Jew killed another Jew? It's beyond any logical thinking that they worship a dead Jew... no Jew would ever pray to a dead Italian...

An agency that provides administrative services to the U.S. military posted an Easter sermon on its website that described a New Testament passage preaching to Jews as a demand to “say sorry” for killing Jesus.

The Washington Headquarters Services pulled down the sermon attributed to a Navy chaplain in North Carolina on April 28, a day after complaints by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, a group that advocates for troops and veterans who report discrimination in the military.

Both the foundation and the Jewish War Veterans have called for an inquiry into the sermon by Lt. Aristotle Rivera of Camp Lejeune and how it was posted on March 30. The foundation, which also wants repercussions against Rivera, said the sermon contradicted rules against proselytizing and peddling bigotry.

It wasn’t clear why an administrative services agency would post a sermon of any kind. Regina Meiners, the acting director of the Washington Headquarters Service, did not return a request for comment.

Rivera’s sermon takes a well-known passage in the New Testament book Acts that is an account of Peter preaching to “men of Israel” the redemption available in Christ’s death. He appears to use the passage to dismiss liberal interpretations of scripture.

The chaplain concludes that the message of the passage is “Jesus lived. You killed him. God raised him. We saw him. Say sorry,” and wishes readers a Happy Easter, which took place this year on April 4.

The King James Bible text recounting Peter’s conclusion to the sermon is “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation and its director, Mikey Weinstein, brought the complaint on behalf of what it says are 32 military and civilian defense personnel in the greater Washington region, 24 of whom are Jewish.

The Jewish War Veterans said it wanted an “apology and admission of wrongdoing by Lt. Rivera.” The group also said it was asking the Department of Defense to issue a statement acknowledging the anti-Semitic nature of the article.

“Don’t Scream, Just Breathe, Just Breathe In And Out” – How A Police Officer Saved His Life In Meron

One of the survivors of the Meron disaster was the bochur Shalom Dovid, whose life was saved by a Border Police officer.

“My friend and I were on the way out and I saw how crowded it was,” he told Channel 12 News. “So I told my friend that we need to leave but when we started going down the walkway, it was terribly crowded and suddenly we began slipping on the slippery incline and began falling. And when we reached the steps, each person fell on top of the next person.”

“After everyone fell, a Border Police officer bent down to me and said: ‘Don’t scream, just breathe, just breathe in and out.'”

“And while he was talking to me, he placed his legs on either side of my head. And if he wouldn’t have done that, my head would have been trampled. He tapped me on my head and asked if I was okay to try to keep me conscious.”

Dovid, who doesn’t know the name of the policeman and would like to find him, turned to the camera and said: “I want to tell you, thank you so much. You concentrated only on me and you saved my life.”

Facebook’s ‘independent’ board stocked with Trump haters

What do you get if you cross a former Danish prime minister, someone who once edited the left-wing Guardian newspaper, a Yemini activist, a bunch of law professors and a Pakistani digital rights advocate? The predictable banning of Donald Trump.

Those are just some of the members of the Facebook Oversight Board, a kind of social media Supreme Court, one the left has already packed. Yesterday, the group extended the banning of Trump from Facebook for six months, urging the company to come up with guidelines that would extend his censoring. Considering how central Facebook can be to political fundraising and outreach, not to mention news, exiling Trump is no small matter. It is meddling with democracy.

Facebook suggests this 20-member group is “independent,” but that’s a farce.

A cursory glance at the board members show how the fix was in against Trump from the start:

  • Co-chair Jamal Greene, a Columbia Law professor, has tweeted “The transparency of Trump’s unfitness means, almost tautologically, that a big chunk of his supporters are conspiracy-minded.”

  • Nighat Dad, a lawyer and “internet activist” in Pakistan, had this to say. “Mr Trump FYI Pakistan is soon going to enact Transgender Protection Act 2017. Sorry America sad to see what kind of country you have become.”

  • Alan Rusbridger, former editor-in-chief of the Guardian who is for some reason on the board, tweeted, “This is terrifying” when Trump said he would decide when the nation reopens from COVID-19 lockdowns.
  • Nicolas Suzor, a Queensland University of Technology law professor in Australia, praised an article comparing Trump to a certain Nazi leader, writing: “I love this! ‘Teen Vogue vs Trump; American Vogue vs Hitler’ ”

  • Afia Asantewaa Asare-Kyei, a human rights lawyer from Ghana and South Africa, who criticized Trump’s immigration policies. The group she was a part of, Open Society Foundation, once Tweeted at Trump: “We support the right to protest, enshrined in the 1st Amendment, and are shocked a sitting president does not share the Founders’ view.”

  • The closest the board seems to get to a conservative is Stanford law professor Michael McConnell, who John McCain and Mitt Romney might have made a Supreme Court justice had they been elected, and John Samples, vice president of the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank. Neither are full throated, unapologetic, or conservative torchbearers. In fact Samples appeared on a podcast called, “Trump’s Assault On America’s Institutions.”

  • Not involved in the Trump decision was Stanford Law Professor Pamela Karlan, but that’s only because she recently stepped down — to join the Biden administration as principal deputy assistant attorney general in the Civil Rights Division.

This is just a sample, but considering that many of the other board members are “activists” or law professors, it’s doubtful any of them own a MAGA hat.

This was Trump’s jury, not a jury of peers but a jury of jeers.

The reason this all matters of course is that a third of Americans get their news from Facebook. The platform is so ubiquitous that for many people it’s the only way they connect with their families and friends.

Allowing a far left leaning, international commission to decide if a former President can reach those Americans is absurd and dangerous.

The bottom line is that an overwhelmingly progressive group of experts have decided that Trump, who received 74 million votes for president, is too dangerous to be allowed on the world’s most important platform. No corporation in our country should have that much power to silence political speech, certainly not one that can’t even put together a fair or balanced oversight board.

Every day Republicans are more ready to rein the social media giant. Facebook may object, but hey, at least those lawmakers are elected.

Yehuda Guetta, 19, who was critically wounded in the Arab shooting attack at Tapuah junction on Sunday Passes Away

19-year-old Yehuda Guetta, a student at the Itamar Yeshiva who was critically wounded in the shooting attack at the Tapuah junction earlier this week, succumbed to his wounds at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva on Wednesday evening.

Guetta, a resident of the Kiryat Moshe neighborhood of Jerusalem, is survived by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the death of Yehuda Guetta and said, "I send my deepest condolences to the family of the late Yehuda Guetta. The IDF, the Shin Bet and the security forces are in pursuit of the criminal terrorist. We will reach him very soon and will bring him to justice. These are difficult moments for the Guetta family and the entire people of Israel are with them in their time of grief.”

Defense Minister Benny Gantz issued a statement following the death of Guetta and said, "My heart goes out tonight to the Guetta family, who lost Yehuda tonight, only 19 years old, after he was shot in the criminal attack at Tapuach Junction. The IDF and all the security forces will not rest until they catch the terrorist who murdered Yehuda. My deepest condolences, I wish you would know no more sorrow," Gantz wrote.

Yossi Dagan, head of the Samaria Regional Council, called for the checkpoints in Judea and Samaria to be restored and for a new community to be established in Samaria in response to the murder.

"A heavy tragedy - not only for the Itamar Yeshiva and the settlement in Samaria - but for the entire State of Israel. Yehuda did not die of cancer. He was murdered because he was a Jew in the Land of Israel. He was killed by a vile murderer, who was instigated and funded by the terrorist Abu Mazen and his terrorist friends from Ramallah. The Israeli government must wake up," Dagan called.

"Our lives are more important than any politics. I am not ready to hear that the IDF will contain the incident. Our lives are not a line in a presentation. The Israeli government must now show leadership. I call on the Prime Minister to immediately approve the establishment of a new community near the Tapuah junction, the scene of the murder, and to double the community of Itamar, where Yehuda had studied. Terrorism must not feel that it is winning. It should be clear that the people of Israel are defeating their vile enemies," he added.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, security forces continued to search for the terrorist suspected of carrying out the shooting attack at Tapuah junction.

Palestinian Arab media reported that the perpetrator is Muntasser Shalbi, from the village of Turmus Aya in the Ramallah area, and that in the last two days the Shin Bet and the IDF have called his family and warned them not to help him.

In a heartwarming gesture, a secular couple from Tel Aviv is donating NIS 1 million to the families of the Meron victims.

Philanthropist and businessman Marius Nacht, one of Israel’s leading entrepreneurs who co-founded the CheckPoint company and is regarded as as one of the founding fathers of Israel’s cybersecurity industry, and his wife, Inbar Nacht, a lawyer, stated on Tuesday that they will be giving NIS 18,000 to each of the 45 families who lost a family member in the disaster.

The donation will be carried out via the couple’s family foundation, Nacht Philanthropic Ventures, which launched a number of initiatives during the coronavirus crisis.

The foundations’ representative, Nachman Rosenberg, told Ynet: “From the moment the news of the tragedy hit, the Nacht family felt obligated, from a moral and Zionist standoint, to find a way to assist, and strengthen the sense of mutual responsibility.”

“After it became known that many of the mourning families struggled with daily financial difficulties, which was exacerbated by the tragedy, Attorney Inbar Nacht made a decision to grant NIS 18,000 that would be immediately transferred to each family directly, without intermediaries.”

Washington DC mayor bans DANCING at weddings Because People are Not "Shomer Negia"

Washington DC has loosened most of its COVID-19 restrictions and doubled allowed capacity in places like schools, gyms and live entertainment events - but has drawn a line on dancing or standing at weddings.

Under an order issued on April 26 by Mayor Muriel Bowser, wedding attendees must remain socially distanced in their seats with standing and dancing both prohibited. The order does lift attendance limits, however, with weddings allowed at 25 percent capacity or up to 250 people, whichever is fewer.

The dancing ban was put in place as an extra layer of safety to reduce the spread of COVID-19 because when people stand and dance their behavior changes, the DC mayor's office told FOX 5 DC. For example, people are more likely to get close and touch each other without a dancing ban.

It was one of the events now allowed under the new COVID-19 guidelines in DC and was listed in the mayor's 12-page decree that also loosened restrictions in other areas, such allowing people to buy booze without food, and doubled capacity from 25 to 50 per cent in non-essential retail businesses, restaurants, bars, gyms and colleges.

But the dance ban is turning off future newlyweds.

Jillian Harig, a bride who is getting married in July, told FOX 5 that people look forward to having fun and dancing at a wedding as part of the celebration.

'We're used to wearing masks at this point, we've been doing this since March. Why not allow dancing but make masks a requirement or even requiring a negative COVID test for wedding guests or provide your vaccination card,' Harig told FOX 5.

'A lot of the country is reopening at this point so to me no dancing or standing at a reception seems like it's a little bit more of stepping backwards instead of moving forward to more of that normalcy that we're all looking forward to,' she said.

'I think the light is at the end of the tunnel. I am disappointed and shocked about this.'

The executive order is in effect until May 20, unless the mayor's office issues another update. Anyone who violates the order can be fined, and venues can have their business licenses suspended or revoked.

CDC releases 'cruel' summer camp rules: Masks must be worn indoors and outdoors, no toy sharing and kids must be 3ft apart

The CDC has been slammed for releasing 'cruel' rules for summer camps that instruct campers to wear masks indoors and outdoors and remain at least three feet apart.

Last month, the CDC shared guidance on how summer camps should operate. That guidance includes mask-wearing indoors and outdoors for campers and staffers whether vaccinated or not. Vaccinations, for now, are limited to adults, not kids.

'All people in camp facilities should wear masks at all times with exceptions for certain people, or for certain settings or activities, such as while eating and drinking or swimming,' the CDC said.

According to the CDC, campers should wear their masks for sports and athletic activities that are done outdoors when possible. Campers should also avoid playing close-contact or indoor sports.

The guidance comes as summer camps that have been devastated by the pandemic prepare to welcome new campers in the coming months. About 60 summer camps had to close their doors due to the impact of the pandemic over the last year.

The agency also noted that campers should maintain a distance of three feet between all campers within a cohort, at least six feet between all campers outside of their cohort and at least six feet while eating and drinking, including among people within the same cohort.

Experts have blasted this guidance as 'draconian' with one infectious disease scientist telling the New York Magazine: 'With staff and parents vaccinated, there is no reason to continue incredibly strict mitigation efforts or put severe limitations on activities.

'Requiring kids to continuously wear masks at camps, even while outside playing in the heat, when it provides little additional protection is unfair and cruel to our children.

Epidemiologist Dimitri Christakis told the publication that the CDC's guidance is 'unfairly draconian'. He added: 'We should let kids be close and play, he said, adding that 'keeping children masked for activities like baseball and tennis is ridiculous'.

Most camp directors sat out last summer as the virus raged across the country, either because of state restrictions that barred them from opening or because of concerns about keeping kids healthy.

But with cases declining and more people vaccinated each day, many are feeling more confident about reopening this season.
