Billionaire former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg endorsed President Biden Thursday and has contributed $20 million toward the incumbent’s re-election effort, according to multiple reports. 

“I stood with Joe Biden in 2020, and I am proud to do so again,” Bloomberg, 82, told the Washington Post. 

Future Forward USA PAC, a pro-Biden group also known as FF PAC, received $19 million from the former three-term mayor, according to the Washington Post and Reuters. 

The Biden Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee authorized by the president’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee, received $929,600 from the Bloomberg L.P. co-founder, the outlets reported. 

Biden, 81, awarded Bloomberg the Presidential Medal of Freedom last month during a White House ceremony. 

“From finance to media to philanthropy, Michael Bloomberg has revolutionized our economy. He’s transformed how we consume information,” Biden said as he bestowed Bloomberg with the nation’s highest civilian honor.

“He’s changed us. He’s challenged us as well, to solve the toughest challenges, from gun violence to climate change. And as mayor, he rebuilt the City of New York after 9/11, channeling our spirit of resilience as a nation and a beacon to the world. Michael, thank you Mr. Mayor.”

Bloomberg made his fortune with financial technology and served as New York City mayor from 2002-2013, initially as a Republican and then as an independent.

He re-registered as a Democrat in 2018 – the party he affiliated himself with prior to his mayoral career – and spent more than $1 billion on an unsuccessful 2020 White House run, in which he competed against Biden in the Democratic primaries. 

Bloomberg’s net worth is reported to be $106 billion, according to Forbes — landing him just outside the top 10 on its list of the world’s top billionaires.

It’s unclear when he made the donations to the Biden re-election effort. 

The Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee raised a combined $85 million in May for the 2024 presidential race. 

Outrage as DA Bragg’s office drops nearly all cases from Columbia University’s anti-Israel protest

 

Nearly all the protesters charged with storming and occupying Columbia University’s campus during heated anti-Israel demonstrations won’t face criminal charges, Manhattan prosecutors announced Thursday — drawing outrage from law enforcement and Jewish advocates.

District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office dismissed cases against 31 of 46 people charged with trespassing in the Ivy League school’s Hamilton Hall after a dramatic April 30 NYPD raid rounded up protesters on the Morningside Heights campus.

Prosecutors largely cited lack of evidence, such as security video footage, that could tie the students or staff to the building takeover for leaving them free and clear without even a slap on the wrist.

The dismissals quickly drew fury from rank-and-file NYPD officers, higher education officials and Jewish leaders who spoke with The Post.

“This is turnstile justice,” said Michael Nussbaum, a 25-year member of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York.

“This a green light for chaos, a green light for destroying property.”

Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Stephen Millan said that prosecutors had trouble moving forward with charges due to “extremely limited” video surveillance that couldn’t prove anything was damaged inside the building.

Milan also told Judge Kevin McGrath that cameras inside Hamilton Hall were covered up during the police raid, and that no cops were injured.

“It would be extremely difficult for the people to prove any charge of misconduct,” Millan said in Manhattan Criminal Court, adding the each of the individuals getting their cases tossed had no criminal history.

Protesters wore masks during the demonstration, making it difficult to point out the specific antics of each individual, the DA’s office added.

Students and staffers at Columbia, Barnard or the Union Theological Seminary who had their charges dropped face disciplinary action by the school, which also factored into the decision, prosecutors said.

Notorious protester Aidan Parisi, 27, a postgrad student in social work at Columbia, was among the 31 to have their cases dismissed.

The lone remaining Hamilton Hall defendant is James Carlson, the scion of millionaire ad executives who owns a $2.3 million home in Park Slope.

Carlson, who has been dubbed as the “possible leader” of the Columbia University protests, faces hate crime, assault and petit larceny raps for allegedly torching an Israel supporter’s flag and then hitting the 22-year-old in the face with a rock during an April demonstration.

He is also accused of destroying a camera inside a holding call at One Police Plaza after he was taken into custody during the Hamilton Hall takeover.

Prosecutors said they plan to move forward with charges against Carlson, who’s been dubbed a wannabe bad boy and is due back in court July 25.

His attorney, Moira Meltzer-Cohen, said that Carlson disputes the “validity of many of these allegations.”

The DA’s office told another 14 individuals — including 12 people not affiliated with the Ivy League school — that their cases would be thrown out on certain conditions.

But defense attorney Matthew W. Daloisio argued that they should have their cases tossed immediately, saying that no one was hurt or damaged property.

“The only allegation that was different is that they weren’t enrolled or currently a faculty member,” Daloisio told the judge, adding that this group included “alumni [and] community members concerned of genocide.”

Prosecutors also threw out nine cases — including six students — who were charged for occupying a building at the City College of New York protests on April 30.

Several police sources could barely contain their disbelief to The Post.

“Lack of evidence?” one said. “Apparently body-worn camera wasn’t enough?” 

“We have a DA giving them what amounts to a mandate to push the envelope further now,” fumed another veteran cop.

Jeffrey Wiesenfeld, who served 15 years as trustee on the governing board for CUNY, said it strained belief that authorities couldn’t identify anyone.

“How can it be that you can’t identify a single person?” he said.

“It’s not acceptable and it’s not good for the city.”

Map shows Chinese-owned farmland next to 19 US military bases in ‘alarming’ threat to national security

 

China has been buying up strategically placed farmland next to military installations across the US, raising national security fears over potential espionage or even sabotage.

The Post has identified 19 bases across the US from Florida to Hawaii which are in close proximity to land bought up by Chinese entities and could be exploited by spies working for the communist nation.

They include some of the military’s most strategically important bases: Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) in Fayetteville, North Carolina; Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood) in Killeen, Texas; Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California, and MacDill air force base in Tampa, Florida.

Robert S. Spalding III, a retired United States Air Force brigadier general whose work focuses US-China relations told The Post: “It is concerning due to the proximity to strategic locations.

“These locations can be used to set up intelligence collection sites and the owners can be influential in local politics as we have seen in the past,” he added.

“It is alarming we do not have laws on the books that would prevent the Chinese from buying property in the US.”

Last month, The Washington Post reported darkly that the Israeli government had shut down the Al Jazeera network’s operations in Israel because of its coverage from Gaza.

WaPo portrayed this as a “dark day” for press freedom.

In fact, there were a lot of good reasons for the Israelis to stop the network from operating inside Israel.

Just one being that a number of Al Jazeera journalists reporting on Israel’s war against terrorists in Gaza were — er — terrorists.

Take Muhammad Washah, whom Al Jazeera presented as a stellar part of the press corps merely reporting the truth.

Unfortunately for them, their man is also a senior commander in Hamas.

He used to be in Hamas’ anti-tank missile unit, but since 2022 he has been in charge of research and development for aerial weapons.

Known to you and me as “rockets.”

It’s quite something to pull off.

On the one hand, Washah can spend his days making rockets to fire at Israel.

But in the evenings he can report on the terrible destruction in Gaza caused by the “Zionist entity.”

As though it is inexplicable that the Israelis could have any reason to strike any targets in Gaza.

He might have kept getting away with it if IDF soldiers in Gaza had not managed to get a hold of his laptop.

Something that proved the Al Jazeera man’s true loyalties.

The same went for two Al Jazeera “journalists” killed in an airstrike in Rafah in January.

Hamza Wael Dahdouh was the son of Al Jazeera’s Gaza correspondent, Wael Al-Dahdouh.

And while the network complained about the Israelis hitting the vehicle they were in, what they did not mention was that the “journalists” were in a vehicle with a Hamas drone operator while it was targeting Israeli soldiers.

Oh, and young Wael was not just a “journalist,” but a member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad who was “actively involved in attacks” against the Israelis.

2,500 Rabbanim Accuse Schumer of Sabotage as Jewish Hate Crimes Soar

A coalition of Orthodox Jewish leaders is calling out Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s empty rhetoric on combating antisemitism as hate crimes against American Jews continue to spiral out of control.

All 2,500 rabbis represented by the Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV) slammed Schumer’s recent antisemitic accusations against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his baseless claims that Israel fails to safeguard Arab civilians properly.

“You have often referred to yourself as a ‘Shomer,’ Hebrew for ‘guardian’ or ‘watchman,’ describing your role as encompassing protecting the interests of Israel and the Jewish people,” a letter from CJV reads.

With anti-Jewish hate metastasizing in primary schools, on Ivy League campuses, and in America’s streets, CJV is demanding Schumer stop obstructing three important pieces of Senate legislation.

The make-or-break bills include mandating the authoritative International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism in federal cases; installation of a dedicated White House antisemitism advisor; and severe sanctions opposing the International Criminal Court’s rogue prosecution attempts against Israeli leadership.

“We are confident that Senators will see fit to pass all three of these critical Acts, if given the opportunity to vote upon them,” the letter reads. “As the government official tasked with scheduling items onto the agenda for deliberation in the Senate, you are in a unique position to ensure these three bills receive their due consideration.”

Now the clock is ticking for Schumer to finally back up his self-professed “shomer” bravado with concrete action. Each day he continues sabotaging this legislation is another day emboldening the rising tide of hate against American Jews.

Insane! US Encircled by Enemies, Yet Wants Israel to Surrender to Terrorists

 While Russian warships, including a nuclear submarine, this week docked in Cuba, and with China building a major deep-water port in Peru that could serve the Chinese military, the US administration is pressuring only Israel to allow the Iran-backed terrorist group Hamas to win the war it launched against Israel on October 7.

When an ally is attacked by terrorists, the fundamental principle of an alliance dictates that the victim must be provided unwavering support to defeat the terrorists and dismantle the terror infrastructure completely, ensuring that the terrorists cannot regroup to launch further attacks.

Without such a commitment, it, the trust between allies erodes, and terrorists are emboldened. The situation has become particularly dire for Israel, which has been facing brutal attacks on multiple fronts. Despite these assaults, the Biden Administration has not only failed consistently to support Israel after it was invaded on October 7, 2023, accompanied by thousands of missiles, but has also pressed for policies favoring Hamas and its sponsors and enablers, Qatar and Iran.

After yet another of Iran’s other proxy terrorist militias, Hezbollah, not only joined Hamas in attacking Israel but has kept escalating its attacks, the response from the Biden administration has been to warn — not Hezbollah or Iran against warmongering – but Israel. Oct. 7th failures: The Hamas training exercise days before the massacre

Just four days before October 7th, a lookout at the Nahal Oz military installation identified a terrorist training exercise near the Gaza border, Kan News reported.

According to the report, the exercise included approximately 170 who practiced launching rockets while attacking IDF tanks.

The exercise was identified at 9:00 a.m., and the lookout reported it properly to her superiors. According to security sources, although the exercise was extensive and unusual, it was described as "just any other exercise that was carried out in the Gaza Strip in the past."

The scenarios that were practiced during the exercise were implemented almost exactly on October 7th, both the rocket launches and the attacks on the tanks.

The IDF Spokesperson commented on the report:

 "The IDF is investigating the events of October 7th and what preceded them. The purpose of the investigations is to learn lessons for the continuation of the fighting. The investigations are currently underway and when they are completed the findings will be transparently presented to the public."

US worried: Israel's aerial defense system won't stand major Hezbollah attack ...But Crazy Joey Napping!

 

US officials have serious concerns that Israel's aerial defense system would not be able to stand up against a large-scale Hezbollah attack if an all-out war were to occur, CNN reported on Thursday.

According to the report, Israeli officials told the US they are planning to shift resources from southern Gaza to northern Israel in preparation for a possible offensive in Lebanon.

“We assess that at least some” Iron Dome batteries “will be overwhelmed,” a senior administration official told the American news outlet.

According to an Israeli official, it would be more likely if Hezbollah conducted a large-scale attack principally using precision-guided weapons, which could be challenging for the system to defend against.

A separate US official confirmed to CNN that in the event of a full-blown war, the support Israel will need most is additional air defense systems and Iron Dome replenishments, which the US would provide.

The IDF declined to comment.

Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) on Thursday sent a letter to US President Joe Biden, criticizing the Biden administration for withholding weapons and ammunition from Israel as it continues to battle Hamas.

In the letter, Cotton requested that the administration provide a complete list of all weapons and ammunition Israel has requested, as well as explanations for the delays.

“I write regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s public statement this week that your administration has been withholding weapons and ammunition from Israel and hampering its war effort against Hamas—a serious accusation from a trusted US ally,” wrote Cotton, a reference to Netanyahu’s video from this week, in which he expressed astonishment at moves from the Biden administration to hold up munitions shipments to Israel during the war against Hamas.

“Your administration responded by claiming that aid is flowing normally, with one official asserting, ‘We genuinely do not know what he’s talking about,’” added Cotton, in a reference to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s response to Netanyahu’s video.

“You claim that the only hold or delay is on the 2,000-pound and 500-pound bombs you refused to deliver earlier this year. But you’re deliberately misleading the American people and insulting a key ally,” charged the Senator.

“Your administration is engaged in bureaucratic sleight-of-hand to withhold this crucial aid to Israel during a shooting war. As you are aware, the Arms Export Control Act requires the administration to notify Congress before sending weapons to a foreign country. Your administration has manipulated this requirement by withholding this formal notification to Congress of approved weapons sales, including F-15s, tactical vehicles, 120-mm mortars, 120-mm tank rounds, joint direct attack munitions, and small diameter bombs. Your administration can then claim that the weapons are ‘in process’ while never delivering them,” he wrote to Biden.

“You’re playing politics with the nation’s honor and our ally’s security. Worse still, your administration lacks the honesty to communicate its true policy to the American people, instead preferring to hide behind weasel words and bureaucratic process,” continued Cotton

He added, “Any delays to military support to Israel blatantly disregard Congress’s bipartisan mandate to supply Israel with all it needs to defeat the Hamas terrorists and other Iranian-backed groups. Our ally is under sustained threat, and we must use all available resources to expedite military aid. Please provide the following information no later than July 1, 2024:”

“What weapons and ammunition are being withheld from Israel? Include any weapons or ammunition delayed more than two weeks beyond their original delivery date.”

“Provide a list of all foreign military and direct commercial sales requested by Israel and the status of each request. Provide explanation for any delays.”

“Provide a list of any weapons or ammunition Israel has requested be expedited, the status of each request, and an explanation for that status.”

“What issues are hampering you from expediting the delivery of weapons and ammunition to Israel? What, if any, legislative relief is required to address those issues?”

“How much of the recent supplemental funding passed by Congress has your administration expended to deliver weapons and ammunition to Israel?”

In response to Netanyahu’s video, the White House cancelled a high-level meeting that Israel’s national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi and Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer were scheduled to hold in Washington on Thursday.

The two ended up holding meetings with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

IDF Soldier that Biden/Blinken Murdered Was A Father of Two and A Talmid Chacham

 

Laly, the mother of Staff Sergeant (Res.) Saadia Yaakov Dery, 27 from Tel Aviv, who was killed in action over the last 24 hours in the Gaza Strip and whose name was cleared for publication this morning (Friday), eulogized him and spoke about her son's character.

"My Saadia was a child who prioritized everyone's wishes before his own. He did much more than expected of him in every field. He was a wise student, studied for rabbinic exams, and started his bachelor's degree in teaching. He studied every free minute and had a great sense of humor. He was an amazing father to Haleli and Yinon. He was a hero in soul and body and never complained. On October 7th, he was with us when he was called for duty. Saadia loved this people, loved the Torah and the land, and fought for it," the mother eulogized.

She addressed Israel's leaders directly: "Since the beginning of the war, I was silent; now I have an obligation not to be silent. I will not allow the enormous sacrifice we made and my fallen son to be in vain. In Saadia's name, we demand victory and absolute resolve. My son did not fall for the sake of a diplomatic arrangement but for a complete victory over the enemy."

Binyamin Regional Council Governor and Yesha Council Chairman Israel Ganz also eulogized Dery. "This was Saadia Yaakov: a man, a father, a warrior, a yeshiva student, and a warm and loving family man. The Binyamin Region bows its head to the finest fruit that grew in it and fell for all of us."

"Last night, an hour before the news, we were in contact with the dear mother Laly, as she came up with ideas and initiatives to improve the response to bereaved families. She was running between bereaved families and encouraging them, even yesterday. Last night they knocked on her door. I want to send a big hug to his wife Racheli, the parents, and the whole family. The spirit of victory of Saadia and his friends must continue to beat and we must strengthen the leaders to strike the enemy to the end. Do not stop a minute too soon," said Ganz.

Dery originally came from the town of Eli in Binyamin. He is survived by his wife Racheli, and his children Haleli, 2, and Yinon, 1.

His parents, Laly and Chaim Dery, are central figures in Eli. Laly was a member of the Binyamin Regional Council and a public activist. Saadia had six siblings.

Dery will be laid to rest on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Holon Military Cemetery.

Heathrow Airport Security Staff Harassing Jewish And Israeli Passengers

A scandal has erupted at Heathrow Airport after security staff were accused of wearing badges with the Palestinian flag and symbols of solidarity with Palestine, creating a hostile environment for Jewish and Israeli passengers. The incident occurred on Sunday at Terminal 4’s Fast Track lane, where five security staff were wearing the badges while scanning luggage for passengers bound for Tel Aviv on an El Al flight.

Passengers complained that the badges made them feel intimidated and uncomfortable, prompting UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI) to demand an investigation into the incident. UKLFI alleges that the staff breached Heathrow’s uniform policy and the Equality Act 2010 by wearing the “highly offensive” badges.

The security guards were reportedly replaced, and their badges were confiscated following passenger complaints. This incident comes after a similar incident on another El Al flight, where passengers were made to feel singled out and targeted at customs.

UKLFI has written to Heathrow’s services director, expressing concern that the security staff’s actions created an “intimidating and hostile environment” for Jewish and Israeli passengers. A Heathrow spokesperson responded, “Everyone should feel safe and welcome at Heathrow. We have guidance on what colleagues can wear at work, and if that guidance is not followed, we will ensure those items are removed immediately, as was the case in this instance.”

 

Israelis applying for US Visas or Green Cards are Being Probed for War Crimes!

 Israelis filling out applications for US green cards and visas must now answer detailed questions regarding their army service to ensure they didn’t commit war crimes, Ynet reported on Thursday.

According to the report, Yuval, a senior manager at a high-tech company in Silicon Valley in the U.S., was happy to receive a letter from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) last week about his application for a green card. But he was shocked by the content of the letter: 

“In your application form you stated that you served in the Israel Defense Forces between 2005-2008. You must provide us with additional information about your military service so that we can make a final decision on your case,” the letter read.

“You must submit an affidavit under oath, describing your military service,” the letter continued. “As part of this affidavit, the following questions must be addressed:

 Did you participate as a combatant in battles during your military service? If so, please describe your activity/role in these battles; Did you command soldiers in the army? If yes, please describe the aspects of your command; Have you ever guarded (or commanded others to guard) detainees? Did you use explosives during your military service? If so, detail the types of weapons or explosives you were trained on.”

“Have you ever actually used weapons or explosives? If so, what weapons or explosives did you use? How did you use weapons or explosives? On how many occasions did you use weapons or explosives? How often did you use weapons or explosives? Did you use a weapon and/or an explosive against another person? If so, the circumstances must be detailed, and explain why you used a weapon and/or an explosive against another person/people.”

According to the letter, if Yuval did not provide an affidavit with answers satisfactory to the USCIS within eight days, he could be expected to be deported from the U.S.

Biden-Blinken Murder Two IDF Soldiers in Gaza

Every soldier killed or wounded in Gaza is a direct result of the Biden/Blinken's failed policy to appease murderers! 

 The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit announced on Friday morning the names of two IDF reserve soldiers who were killed in battle in the central Gaza Strip: Sergeant First Class (Res.) Omer Smadga HY’D, 25, from Ganot Hadar, and Sergeant First Class (Res.) Saadia Yaakov Dery HY’D, 27, from Tel Aviv.

Both soldiers were part of the 9203rd Battalion, 3rd “Alexandroni” Brigade.

In the same incident that claimed the lives of Smadga and Dery, three other reserve soldiers from the 3rd “Alexandroni” Brigade were severely wounded. They were evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment, and their families have been notified.

These deaths bring the total number of troops killed in the ground offensive against Hamas and operations on the Gaza border to 313.

Left-leaning billionaire George Soros is trying to recruit the Democrat-controlled Federal Communications Commission to help fast track his takeover of the nation’s second-biggest radio network.

Soros, 93, pumped $400 million into Audacy in February, a network which reaches 165 million monthly listeners and includes a handful of conservative shows from hosts including Sean Hannity, Dana Loesch, Mark Levin, Glenn Beck and Erick Erickson.

But their influence is likely to be muted if the billionaire takes over and imposes his agenda, as has happened with other media acquisitions.  

However, to take control Soros Fund Management needs help from the FCC as the money funneled into buying the bankrupt network comes from abroad.

Under existing FCC rules, foreign company ownership of US radio stations is not allowed to exceed 25% — but a filing acquired by The Post details Soros’ asking the commission to make an exception.

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr is raising an alarm that was first set off by Texas Congressman Chip Roy (R-Texas) in April.

“The FCC should not create a special Soros shortcut,” Carr told The Post this week.

“When it comes to a broadcast station acquisition of this size and magnitude – hundreds of radio stations across more than 45 markets – the FCC needs to run its full and normal review process. 

“The FCC should not be skipping steps or waiving required agency processes.”

Gerer Rebbe Insists on being "Menachem Ovel " Only One Son of the Pnei Menachem

 

The Pnei Menachem had 4 Sons and one daughter. The Widow and mother of the sons was nifteres last week. 

Problem: One of the Sons is none other than Harav Shaul alter Shlitah, the Rosh Yeshiva of Sfas Emes. The Gerer fired him because he felt threatened by him as Harav Shaul Alter is a huge Tamid Chachim and has a huge following. 

When he fired him, thousands of Gerer Chassidim left Ger to follow their Rosh Yeshiva. The Gerer Rebbe went Ape-Sh_T , and threw out all of Rav Shaul's followers from his moidois.

No Problem. Rav Shaul's followers opened up new Shuls all over the world and new Moisdois! 

But then the Peni Menachim's wife died, he was the previous Gerer Rebbe and the uncle of the present Gerer Rebbe. 

What to do?? 

If he didn't go to be "menachem ovel" that would look very petty and would be the talk of town! 

So some genius came up with a solution, the rebbe would be menacheim avol only one son!

Just that you guys know all Rav Shaul's siblings back Rav Shaul 100% and all the gedoilim came to be menachim ovel Rav Shaul!

This fight that the Gerer Rebbe started when he fired his Rosh Yeshiva was all "le'shem shmayim!"

US Envoy Amos Hochstein Says Talks Failed, Can’t Stop Hezbollah’s War with Israel

 

US special envoy Amos Hochstein announced Wednesday that his efforts to prevent an all-out war between Lebanon’s Iranian proxy, Hezbollah, and the State of Israel, have failed.

Hochstein, a top adviser to President Joe Biden, arrived in the region on Monday for talks in Israel and Lebanon.

The US envoy met first with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, President Isaac Herzog and other tops Israeli officials.

Hochstein then traveled to Beirut, where he met with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Hezbollah-linked Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, before returning to Jerusalem to convey the results of his efforts.

Israel has repeatedly warned that its military forces will push Hezbollah’s terrorist army back across the Litani River if diplomatic efforts fail to do so.

New Study Suggests Some Tefillin Boxes Were Not Colored Black 2,000 Years Ago

 

According to Jewish law, the tefillin boxes (Batim) should be colored black (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chayim, 32:40). However, a team of researchers from Israel and Great Britain has conducted a battery of scientific tests that showed that at least some ancient tefillin were not blackened. 

The research was led by Prof. Yonatan Adler, of Ariel University, together with Dr. Ilit Cohen-Ofri and Dr. Yonah Maor of the Israel Antiquities Authority, Dr. Theresa Emmerich Kamper of the University of Exeter, and Dr. Iddo Pinkas of the Weizmann Institute of Science.

The findings, published tonight in the prestigious journal PLOS ONE (Black surfaces on ancient leather tefillin cases and straps from the Judean Desert: Macroscopic, microscopic and spectroscopic analyses), challenge long-held assumptions about the practice of tefillin observance.

In 1949, archaeologists discovered several leather tefillin cases in a cave near Qumran, where the first Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Subsequently, additional tefillin cases were unearthed in other caves near Qumran, in Wadi Murabba‘at, and Nahal Se’elim—all in the Judean Desert. 

These findings are dated to the same time as the Dead Sea Scrolls, from around the end of the Second Temple period—or about 2,000 years ago. The arid desert climate helped these artifacts survive for millennia until their discovery. Today, the tefillin cases are preserved in the storeroom of the Israel Antiquities Authority’s Dead Sea Scrolls Unit in Jerusalem, where the climatic conditions of the caves are replicated.
