You can help Nazi victims’ families learn their fates in online archive project

A huge crowdsourcing project to memorialize the victims of Nazi persecution is bringing together thousands of volunteers from across the globe who are locked down during the international coronavirus crisis. 

The “Every Name Counts” project, based out of Germany’s Arolsen Archives (formerly the International Tracing Service), aims to make 26 million recently digitized primary historical records searchable.

Cynthia Peterman is a Washington, DC, Jewish educator. Tamara Matic recently graduated from university and lives in a village in northwestern Serbia. Gaby Schuller works as a high school secretary in Coburg, Germany. Chana Broder is a retired English teacher living near Tel Aviv.

None of these women know one another. However, they have joined thousands of other volunteers to index the digital documents.

The project was originally launched to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day last January. Twenty schools near the archive in Bad Arolsen, Germany, were involved in a limited pilot, and there were plans to expand the project in 2021.

Breathtaking 4K video shows Mars in ultra-high definition

These videos are truly out of this world.

Extraordinary images captured by NASA’s robotic rovers are giving Earthlings their first look at Mars in state-of-the-art, ultra high-definition video.

A 10-minute clip posted on YouTube features panoramic views of the Red Planet’s surface, including sweeping deserts, massive dunes, craggy outcroppings and cracked ground strewn with jagged rocks.

“This is the first time Martian footage has been rendered in stunning, 4K resolution,” a narrator intones as haunting music plays in the background.

The video’s “journey across the surface of another world” was posted by Britain’s ElderFox Documentaries, which said it was created using digital photos shot by three NASA rovers — Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity — and beamed back to Earth.

They were then “stitched together” to create the illusion of a camera panning across the desolate and barren landscape — and provide what the narrator calls the “most lifelike experience of being on Mars.”

Two naive Jewish fools, Ben Cohen & Jerry Greenfield think that if they team up with the vicious anti-Semitic BLM movement... Ilhan Omar and Tlaib will love them....

Ben and Jerry’s declared its support for the “defund the police” movement in a tweet marking Juneteenth, the day commemorating the end of U.S. slavery.

“Defund the police, defend Black communities!” the Vermont-based ice cream company said in a tweetFriday. “This #Juneteenth, it’s more important than ever that we dismantle the racist and ineffective model of American policing. Learn more about how defunding the police works and why we so desperately need it.”

The tweet linked to a press release stating the company’s interpretation of “defund the police,” which it says presents the best opportunity yet to transform the U.S. policing model so that “Black Americans and people of color can finally experience and celebrate true freedom.”

DIN Endorses "Yoily For President" in 2020

We here at DIN were at first very excited by the Kenya West candidacy, but when he said that "Harriet Tubman didn't free the slaves," that did it for us .... We also didn't think that his idea that the "Israeli Continent" should grant each Black child a million US dollars, was a feasible option at this time, maybe we can revisit this request when the blacks start putting on Rabbeinu Tam tefillin.

When we in the DIN newsroom, heard what Yoily was offering, we knew we had a winner. ... 

A guy who thinks that "battleground states" is about people fighting whether they should put on masks on and has no clue what a "filibuster" is, thinks the "Electoral College" is a college that places the votes "electrically," and believes that "Incumbent" is a vegetable, is our man in Washington for the next four years ...
We hope he chooses Abby Stein as his VP .. this would balance out the ticket.

Auschwitz: Identifying inscriptions found in children's shoes

Employees of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum discovered handwritten inscriptions in shoes belonging to children who were sent to the Nazi death camp in Poland.

The discoveries were made in the course of efforts to preserve the shoes on display at the museum.

One inscription identified a shoe as belonging to Amos Steinberg, who was born in Prague in 1938 and imprisoned with his parents in the Theresienstadt ghetto in 1942. He was later sent to Auschwitz.

“We can guess that it was most likely his mother who made sure that her child’s shoe was signed,” Hanna Kubik of the museum’s collections department said in a statement Tuesday announcing the findings. 

“The father was deported in another transport. We know that on October 10, 1944, he was transferred from Auschwitz to the Dachau camp. He was liberated in the Kaufering sub-camp.”

In another shoe, employees found documents in Hungarian with several names: Ackermann, Brávermann and Beinhorn.

“These people were probably deported to Auschwitz in the spring or summer of 1944 during the extermination of Hungarian Jews,” Kubik said. “I hope that more detailed research will reveal details about each individual.”

Vast quantities of children’s shoes are on display at Auschwitz, and the museum has been engaged in an ongoing effort to preserve them. Many historical artifacts have been found in this process, including letters, newspaper fragments and bank notes, some of which were used as lining or padding.

About 230,000 children are estimated to have been imprisoned in Auschwitz, the vast majority of whom perished there.

New York Times Owners Were Slaveholders

The Talmud in tractate Kiddushin (70a) has a great saying:

It’s far worse than I thought. In addition to the many links between the family that owns the New York Times and the Civil War’s Confederacy, new evidence shows that members of the extended family were slaveholders.

Last Sunday, I recounted that Bertha Levy Ochs, the mother of Times patriarch Adolph S. Ochs, supported the South and slavery. She was caught smuggling medicine to Confederates in a baby carriage and her brother Oscar joined the rebel army.

I have since learned that, according to a family history, Oscar Levy fought alongside two Mississippi cousins, meaning at least three members of Bertha’s family fought for secession.

Adolph Ochs’ own “Southern sympathies” were reflected in the content of the Chattanooga Times, the first newspaper he owned, and then the New York Times. The latter published an editorial in 1900 saying the Democratic Party, which Ochs supported, “may justly insist that the evils of negro suffrage were wantonly inflicted on them.”

Six years later, the Times published a glowing profile of Confederate President Jefferson Davis on the 100th anniversary of his birth, calling him “the great Southern leader.”

Eli Bar Zakai The Driver Who Downed Bottle of Vodka Before Killing Teen Gets 12 years in Prison

The Tel Aviv District Court on Tuesday sentenced a driver who killed a teenager while driving under the influence two years ago to 12 years in prison.

The court also revoked Eli Bar Zakai’s license for 20 years and ordered him to pay NIS 100,000 ($29,172) compensation to the family of 13-year-old Eylon Shalev-Amsalem, killed in a 2018 fatal traffic accident in Tel Aviv.

Bar Zakai, who the court determined drank a bottle of vodka before getting behind the wheel, was also given an 18-month suspended sentence and ordered to pay another NIS 75,000 ($21,000) to the family of another teenager, who was injured in the crash.

“The sequence of conscious decisions made by the defendant shattered Elon’s family,” Judge Benny Sagi said, leaving Shalev-Amsalem’s parents “with a wounded and bleeding soul forever.”

After the sentencing, Shalev-Amsalem’s father Kobi said “no punishment will bring him back. At least we have brought a painful chapter to a close.”

The other teenager who was injured along with Shalev-Amsalem, but cannot be identified as he is a minor, was also present at the sentencing.

“The court ruled that anyone who gets into vehicle, and God forbid is involved in such an accident, will be subject to a heavy and significant punishment,” said prosecutor Erez Richtenberg.
