Rabbi Shalom Cohen who Called Kipa Seruga Wearing Jews .."amaleikim" now wants Yeshivois to throw out Students who have a Smartphone

Rabbi Cohen is the leading Sephardi Rabbi and is also the Rosh Yeshiva of the Porat Yosef and Avnei Nezer Yeshivois but what is important to mention is that he is the spiritual leader of Shas the Sephardie political party founded by R' Ovadia Yosef z"l.

He is known to make outrageous comments such as stating that Frum Jews that are Shoimrei Torah Umitzvois who wear Tefillin every day and who scrupulously observe mitzvois but who wear a knitted wool kipah, are "amaleikim."

In 2014, at a "Yom Tefilah" rally during the Israel-Gaza conflict, he told the open-mouthed soldiers that were starving for some words of chizuk  "Do you think that Israel needs an army?" this during a war that killed 85 young IDF soldiers and wounded 2,639 some with lifelong injuries.

He also issued a "fatwa" prohibiting Chareidie woman from undertaking post-high-school studies at academic colleges.

Now what's interesting is that if you asked any Satmar Chasid or Toldos Aaron Chassidim what they think of Rabbi Cohen, they would un-doubtedly answer that he is a "meen and apikoras" since he is the leader of the Shas Party that sits in the Zionist Knesset that Satmar call a "gathering of meenin and apikorsim"

So why did he make this comment at this time?

Rabbi Cohen, as we saw above, cannot control himself and "shoots from the hip" so to speak, and doesn't want anyone recording his outrageous comments.

Ahead of the new school year, Avnei Nezer Yeshiva dean Rabbi Zamir Cohen met with the head of Shas' Council of Torah Sages, yeshiva dean Rabbi Shalom Cohen, who warned of the "dangers of technology" in the yeshiva world.

"A young man who has an iPhone should be removed from the yeshiva, since this is the root of all the corruption and damage to all the students in the yeshiva, and even to the desecration of Shabbat (the Sabbath), my G-d spare us, stem from this," Kikar Hashabbat quoted Rabbi Cohen as saying.

Advocates for secular ed in Yeshivas file another complaint against DOE

Advocates for improving secular education in yeshivas are upping the pressure on New York City to release findings from its yearslong investigation into Hasidic schools.

Young Advocates For Fair Education, or YAFFED, filed a formal complaint this month demanding the city Department of Education publicly acknowledge if its investigation has concluded or is ongoing.

“It’s time for the city to come clean on the status of this investigation and to begin enforcing these basic standards in all schools,” said Naftuli Moster, founder and executive director of YAFFED, at a press conference Wednesday.

The complaint was filed July 13 with the New York State Education Department. It demands to see records and remediation plans from the DOE, and also alleges the department’s apparent inaction “harms parents and students of the named schools by depriving them of the ability to make informed decisions with respect to education.”

Donna Lieberman of the New York Civil Liberties Union and State Sen. Robert Jackson were among the leaders to call for more transparency on Wednesday — seven years since YAFFED filed its first complaint alleging dozens of yeshivas failed to offer basic academics.

Earlier this summer, a New York state judge ruled that city and state education agencies must complete their investigations into the yeshivas. The decision came as a number of religious schools have sent 180,000 letters to the education department opposing draft guidelines for increased state oversight into the institutions.

The DOE declined to comment on “ongoing investigations and litigation” — while state education officials said it could not comment on pending appeals that Commissioner Betty Rosa oversees.

Satmar Rebbe Attacks Belzer Rebbe Quotes the"Vayoel Moshe " That said that those who align themselves with the government are "Meenim & Apikorsim"

What did the Belzer Rebbe do that was so bad?

He decided to have Math & English taught in his elementary schools thereby giving his institutions vital funds from the Israeli Government. This according to the Satmar Rebbe means that he is aligning with the Zionists "meenim & apikorsim" which make the Belzer a "meen & apikoras"

What the rebbe didn't mention is that the Satmar Rebbe had his staff fill out mandatory forms, required by the New York Board of Education stating under the penalty of perjury that Math, English etc are in the Satmar curriculum thereby making his schools eligible for City, State and Federal funds, which they presently receive. Satmar is currently fighting New York State because the State now wants Chareide Moisdois to introduce Science, Bio and LGBT ideas.

So, in other words, its ok for Satmar to take government funds but it is not ok for Belz to take government funds to teach the exact same subjects that Satmar claims is being taught in their schools. The "meenim & apikorsim" phrase that the rebbe uses against Belz is truer in New York where the threat of government intervention is very real and they are now battling with the help of the Zionist Agudah of America, apikorsehe studies such as Science, Bio and LGBT Studies, etc.

Satmar Rebbe of Williamsburg (R' Zalman Leib )  launched a fierce attack against those who wish to change the way of chareidie education that has been practiced for generations, in light of the publication about the agreements reached by representatives of the Belz Chasidim with the Ministry of Education, the Minister of Education and the Minister of Finance Lieberman about special budgeting for educational institutions that meet special criteria relating to secular studies at a higher level.

A loose translation of the above speech which was delivered in Yiddish (I only translated the pertinent parts, he also dragged in the Chasam Sofer)

Agudah's New MK Goldknopf Will work with Gantz as PM, Demands Finance Ministry Willing to give up all Settlements

This "shady" Goldknopf character and his rebbe are willing to sell their tainted souls to the devil and align themselves with Gantz who is on a mission to give the entire Judea & Samaria to the Arabs. Goldknopf doesn't care as long as he gets his sweet position as a finance minister.

You would think that this "spodik" would want a position that would put him in charge of "Public Transportation" giving him the power to make sure there will be no "Chillul Shabbos" but as I said before the frummies don't care about shabbos and don't give two aguroth about girls being drafted.
Goldknopf who treated his staff with utter contempt when in charge of his Bais Yaakov, wants to be near the "shissel" near the sweet honey pot of $$$$$!

Agudat Israel’s and the Gur dynasty’s candidate for the Knesset Rabbi Yitzhak Goldknopf was interviewed by Channel 12 on Tuesday night and discussed with Haredi journalist Yair Sharkey the break with Lithuanian politician MK Moshe Gafni, the talks with PM wannabe Benny Gantz, and what it’s like to enter parliamentary politics at the ripe old age of 72.

Yitzhak Issachar Goldknopf (born October 30, 1950) is the candidate chosen by the central faction in Agudat Israel to replace Yaakov Litzman in the next Knesset. Goldknopf is an askan (activist) of the Gur Hasidic movement, secretary of the rabbinic committee for the sanctity of Shabbat, CEO of the Beit Yaakov and Beit Petahia kindergartens and daycare centers, and in the past served on the Jerusalem Municipality Council.

“When the Gerrer Rebbe called me and told me: ‘I have decided that you will be president of Agudat Israel in the Knesset,’ I answered ‘Hineni’ (Here I am)” said Goldknopf, using the same word Abraham used when God was seeking him on the eve of the Akeida of Yitzhak.

“When Benny Gantz called me to congratulate me, I told him I thought the best thing is to enter the Knesset at an old age,” he told Sharkey. When the latter asked him about cooperation with Gantz should the Netanyahu bloc fail to obtain 61 mandates, Goldknopf said it’s possible, but quickly clarified: “I don’t know what to say, I defer to the Council of Torah Sages.”

He also ruled out any cooperation with Prime Minister Yair Lapid: “We don’t go with Lapid, you know the beatings we got from him,” Goldknopf said.

From the start of his political career, Lapid stated that the middle class could no longer bear “the burden of the Haredi public” and promised to work to integrate them into the army, the civil service, and the labor market. In 2013, after he was appointed Finance Minister, he cut about half the budget for Haredi yeshivas and planned to cut the government and municipal budget for Haredi schools and to cancel it completely if they do not participate in the core curriculum program. He promoted the “Equal Burden” bill and threatened to dissolve the government if yeshiva students who refused to enlist in the IDF did not face criminal sanctions. He passed a gradual change in the rules for the state’s participation in the expenses of daycare centers and nurseries, according to which the father’s Kollel studies would no longer qualify as an alternative to working. He also introduced the gradual elimination of income guarantees for families with many children. He announced that the law he initiated exempting VAT payment on newlywed couples’ purchase of an apartment would only apply if they served in the IDF or national service. His 2015 budget proposal (he was ousted by PM Netanyahu in 2014) included eliminating the annual NIS 25 million funding for the construction of new religious buildings.

The Haredi response, understandably, was livid. Lithuanian leader Rabbi Aharon Leib Steinman called Lapid Amalek, in other words, the enemy of the Jewish people and God. It may be the reason Goldknopf has been saying he desires the post of Finance Minister in the next government.

“There’s still no medic who could dress these wounds for us,” said Goldknopf, possibly hinting it would take a Haredi Finance Minister such as himself to dress those wounds. He did concede that “Lapid has changed direction, and he may change his direction even more, and his people are also trying to talk to us, but from that to making him the prime minister it’s a long way.”

Goldknopf mentioned that Netanyahu called him and congratulated him, and did the same on Twitter: “I didn’t know what Twitter was, they taught me until I learned to say it right. They told me I was famous on Twitter.”

Goldknopf’s immediate challenge, before deciding who would be the next prime minister, is to make peace within the United Torah Judaism faction, especially with the man he is replacing at the helm, MK Moshe Gafni, who is reluctant to vacate the post. Goldknopf said he and Gafni had not talked and that he was yet to call the seasoned Haredi politician, but clarified: “If I had something to say – I would call him. If he wanted to tell me that he wanted the top spot or he’s walking – he would have called me.”

By the way, all things being equal, Gafni had a stellar reputation as chairman of the Knesset Finance Committee. Perhaps the Haredi Finance Minister should not be Hasidic but Lithuanian…

Regarding the recent rapprochement between Lapid and Gafni, Goldknopf said that “apparently he had something to talk about with him, and he had nothing to talk about with me,” and added that the Council of Torah Sages announced regarding Lapid and his second-largest Yesh Atid party: “Don’t talk to them, don’t call them, don’t be in contact with them.”

He denies accusations in the Haredi world that as the CEO of kindergartens and daycare centers, he habitually fires his staff (that’s about 12,000 individuals) at the end of each year, to prevent them from gaining seniority. He claims those charges are baseless since everything he does is based on sound managerial decisions.

Will the "Wicked" Meir Kin be able to bury his Father in Israel if he still refuse to divorce his wife?

Just that you know, his father is not dead yet!

It's hard to grasp, but Lonna has been an aguna for 18 years - chained against her will to a man who has, himself, remarried, while her life is at a standstill until he releases her.

What will happen to women of our Jewish world whose freedom depends on the mercy of the wicked?

Lonna's father-in-law's days are numbered, and he wants to be buried in Israel. Today, Lonna and her attorney Daniel Schwartz petitioned the Israeli Supreme Court to prevent his eventual burial here in an effort to pressure his son – Lonna's recalcitrant, get-abusing husband - to finally grant Lonna her freedom.

Advocates from OTS's Yad La'isha Legal Aid Center for Agunot stood with Lonna at the court today as amicus curiae - an organization approved by the court to assist the judges by offering information, expertise, or insight that has a bearing on the issues in the case.

Will the State of Israel answer Lonna's pleas and allow this desperate sanction to be imposed in the hope that it will take effect? Yad L'aisha hopes so. The Jewish and democratic state must take responsibility and take responsibility for the agunot in its midst.

Do we like the idea? Of course not. But there is no choice but to put the living before the dead. After all, if the Supreme Court rules in favor of delaying the burial, it is not Lonna who will be ultimately responsible, nor the State of Israel – but rather, his own son. The keys are in his hands; the moment he gives Lonna the divorce, the burial will proceed without event.

יד לאישה, עזרה למסורבות גט ועגונות-Yad Lai

This morning Shoshanna Keats Jaskoll joined well over a dozen supporters in addition to the legal representation of Lonna Ralbag (Kin) & יד לאישה, עזרה למסורבות גט ועגונות-Yad Laisha at the Supreme Court to request that the State refuse the burial of the men who has supported his son in refusing to give Lonna Get for over 18 years .

Not only is there an excommunication decree against Meir himself but also his family for their support of his abuse.

Stunningly however, the community of chabad in LA still allows him not only to daven in shul but to also be called to the Torah.

The court has given the State rabbanut a few months to decide to uphold this excommunication decree.

So now it is in the hands of the rabbinic committee.

However, it is our job to put pressure on the abuser and his family wherever they are to stop their abuse of Lonna and  halacha.

Ami Magazine Features Letter From Rachmistrivka Rebber Praising Maimonides Hospital! Yet the Facts are very different

So what is the truth? Which is it? And if the Hospital is so bad why is Ami featuring a letter that is so far fetched that it boggles the mind?  It could be that the Maimonides Staff was extra careful with the Rebbe Shlitah, but the facts are (read article below) that there are horror stories on a daily basis.

Rachmistrivka Letter

To Maimonides Medical Center

This letter is long overdue. There are really no words that can adequately express our feelings to your

wonderful facility. We are attempting to communicate our feelings of gratitude and appreciation that

we have in our hearts and minds on behalf of the entire Jewish Community, on behalf of Grand Rabbi

Twersky's Family, on behalf of the Rachmistrivke Kehila, on behalf of the Jewish nation worldwide we

would like to take this opportunity to express thanks and gratitude for the good care and special attention

that was granted to our Dear Grand Rabbi, Rabbi Chal Y. Twersky Shelita.

At this point we want acknowledge Maimonides Medical Center Doctors, Specialists, Nurses and all

practitioners that cared for our beloved Rabbi with kindheartedness and special attention.

Specific recognition is given to Dr. Vitzhok Kupfer, Director, Medical Intensive Care Unit & the MICU

Staff. We are fortunate in having Dr. Kupfer as the Rabbi's physician and is granting Rabbi Twersky the

best care humanly possible. We would also like to acknowledge Ms. Mintz Interim Chief Nursing Officer

for her kindness and compassion, and of course expertise in dealing with the Rabbi and his family. A

shoutout is due to all of the Nursing Staff. Last but not least, kudos to our wonderful Executive Vice

President of Maimonides, Douglas Jablon whose name is synonymous with Maimonides Medical Center.

His is a labor of love. He's always there to lend a helping hand and listening ear. May he continue to be

there for our community for many happy healthy years.

After on our team. We thank Keven Cottingham Asst Vice President of Operations for always

facilitating and helping make our stay at the hospital easier and more pleasant.

An honorable mention is due to the following individuals who are always ready and eager to help:

Mr. Chasky Rosenberg, Mr. David Shapiro, Mr. Chalm Fleischer, Mr. Yidel Feig, Rabbi Benzion Leser and

Rabbi Sholom Peach Greenberg. Their support and assistance is available 24/7. We are grateful to have

them on our team.

It is not every day that a hospital has the chance to care for a distinguished and exceptional individual

like our Rabbi. The fact that your institution appreciated their good fortune and extended the Rabbi the

exclusive care and compassion that he received, speaks miles for Maimonides as a great hospital, and for

the staff as gentle and caring individuals. We are proud to have this hospital in our neighborhood.

May G-d continue to guide you and help you heal patients and their families like you have helped us.

With much gratitude and admiration,

Rabli Moshe Kramer

On one side are allegations of mismanagement, self-enrichment and poor performance putting Brooklyn residents in danger.

On the other is a dismissal of these complaints as a disinformation campaign — spread by mailers, leaflets and on social media — meant to disparage the quality of care.

In politics, this would be business as usual.

But this fight is happening over Maimonides Medical Center — Brooklyn’s largest safety-net hospital, in Borough Park.

Unilever boss tells Ben & Jerry’s to Shut UP and stay out of geopolitics after Israel flap

Ben & Jerry’s filed a lawsuit against Unilever earlier this month after the parent company sold its Israel division to a local franchisee — contravening the ice cream maker’s ban on doing business in Israeli settlements.

The franchisee, Avi Zinger, will resume selling the ice cream under the Ben & Jerry’s brand in territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War.

Despite the lawsuit, Jope said that Unilever has no plans to sell off Ben & Jerry’s.

“The long-term future of Ben & Jerry’s is squarely part of Unilever,” Jope told the Journal.

Last year, Ben & Jerry’s ignited controversy when it announced that it would halt the sale of its ice cream in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where Palestinians hope to establish an independent state.

The decision was denounced by supporters of Israel as anti-Semitic and state governments in the US applied financial pressure on Unilever by pulling tens of millions of dollars in equity investments from pension funds.

Ben & Jerry’s wants a federal judge in Manhattan to issue a preliminary injunction to block the sale of the brand to Zinger.

The company and its corporate parent then agreed to a two-week mediation period to see if the two sides can strike a deal to avoid litigation.

If no agreement is reached by Thursday, Ben & Jerry’s will continue seeking an injunction.

Sydney Wolf killed after Lyft driver kicks him out on highway

A former staffer for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo was killed by a passing car after he was kicked out of a Lyft by an angry driver while in the middle of a Delaware thoroughfare.

Sidney Wolf, 43, was fatally struck on Coastal Highway (Route 1) at about 1:44 a.m. Sunday when the driver stopped in the left lane and told Wolf and five of his friends to get out, according to the Delaware State Police.

“Shocked & saddened to hear this tragic news,” Cuomo tweeted about his former senior policy advisor. “Sid was a phenomenal public servant who worked relentlessly for the betterment of all NY’ers.”

A driver of a Toyota Corolla behind the Lyft – which was possibly a Honda Pilot – switched lanes to avoid the stopped SUV and hit Wolf who had just gotten out of the rear passenger side and was standing in the roadway.

The other five passengers were uninjured. The driver of the Toyota remained on the scene but the Lyft driver fled and is still at large.

The Lyft driver had picked up the six friends in Dewey Beach and was taking them to Bethany Beach when he “terminated the ride” after an unspecified argument. The crash happened south of Anchor Way, cops said.

Wolf was a married father of two daughters who coached youth hockey, according to Fox 5.

“This is an extremely difficult time for our family,” Wolf’s family said in a statement to the station.

“The level of shock and pain we feel right now cannot be measured as we continue to grieve. We truly appreciate the outpouring of love and support we’ve received and kindly request that the family’s privacy is respected as we move through this process.”

Lyft told Fox it was cooperating with law enforcement’s investigation.

Disgusting: Blinken Meets Family of Killed Al Jazeera Journalist but refuses to meet with parents of Malki Roth murdered by Terrorists

Make no mistake this Al Jazeera was a terrorist supporter and was killed early one morning while walking around with Hamas terrorists. She was likely killed by her own people.
Blinkin the self-hating Jew, despite have parents that were survivors, never met an antisemite he didn't adore. He is a sworn "Obamist " and hates the State of Israel.
The parents of the murdered Jewish child Malki Roth hy"d begged to meet Blinken to discuss the extradition of the Palestinian "klavta" Ahlem Ahmad Al-Tamimi from Jordan, but this Jewish Mamzer refused!

Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Tuesday with the family of a Palestinian-American reporter killed while covering an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank.

The State Department said Blinken met with relatives of Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh and vowed that the U.S. would demand “accountability” for her death.

“The secretary is deeply appreciative of the opportunity to meet with Shireen’s family,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters. “Not only was she an American citizen, she was a reporter whose fearless pursuit of the truth earned her the profound respect of audiences around the world.”

Price said Blinken would use the meeting “to underscore for Shireen’s family our deepest condolences on her tragic death and to reiterate the priority we attach to accountability, something we continue to discuss with our Israeli and Palestinian partners as well.”

He could not say, however, what that accountability might mean.

After reviewing investigations by Israeli and Palestinian authorities, the U.S. concluded on July 4 that Abu Akleh was likely killed by Israeli fire, although not intentionally. But it has not conclusively blamed Israel for her death and has left the question of accountability to the Israelis, prompting anger from the Palestinians and her family.

Relatives — including her brother Tony Abu Akleh, her niece Lina Abu Akleh and her nephew Victor Abu Akleh — have been seeking a meeting with President Joe Biden to make the case for pressing Israel to account for her death. Blinken invited them to visit Washington after Biden was unable to see them while on a visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories earlier this month.

“We are in Washington, D.C., to insist on a thorough, credible, independent, and transparent U.S. investigation into the Israeli military’s killing of our dear Shireen,” the family said in a statement. It called the July 4 U.S. conclusion “an affront to justice” that “enabled Israel to avoid accountability for Shireen’s murder.”

“This is totally unacceptable to us,” they said. “If we allow Shireen’s killing to be swept under the rug, we send a message that the lives of U.S. citizens abroad don’t matter, that the lives of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation don’t matter, and that the most courageous journalists in the world, those who cover the human impact of armed conflict and violence, are expendable.”

2 suspects arrested in disappearance of Moishe Kleinerman

The police have arrested two suspects in the disappearance of 16-year-old Moishe Kleinerman, who went missing after visiting Meron on Lag B'Omer, it was cleared for publication Tuesday.

The suspects' detention has been extended by six days from today.

As the case is still subject to a gag order, the only available details about the suspects are that they were arrested seperately from each other.

Kleinerman is from the city of Modi'in Illit. He disappeared from near the gravesite of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in Meron 122 days ago.

On Tuesday morning, it was reported that there had been an additional development in the investigation.

Kleinerman's family said that "the investigating unit is in continuous contact with the parents and keeps them informed about the progress of the investigation. We see a deep commitment on the part of all those involved in the case, starting from the level of the commissioner, the district commander, the head of the District Attorney's Office, to the last police officer of the investigating unit. We trust the police to take whatever action is necessary to locate Moishe, who has been missing for 122 days, and bring him home. Accordingly, we demand that the issue not be dropped from the agenda."

Rabbi Yair Hoffman's Disingenuous Argument Against Going Up to Har Habyit

Rabbi Yair Hoffman is a very nice guy, but he has an agenda. He wants to make nice to his Yeshivishe followers, most of whom have been brainwashed in their agenda driven yeshivois, by agenda driven Roshei Yeshivas.

In his halachic analysis of whether it is permitted to go up to the Har Habayis, he leaves out a very pertinent part of the puzzle. He purposely leaves out the fact that the Rambam himself actually went up to the Har Habayis with his father and brother accompanied by the then Chief Rabbi of Akko. Not only that, but every year on the anniversary of the date that he went up on the Har Habyis, he celebrated a personal Yomtov with a Seuda. The Rambam mentions his Har Habayis experience in many other letters as well. The one below is in the Rambam's own handwriting.
To those who may want to say that only the Rambam knew exactly where to go, I have two answers. A) The Rambam may hold that one can actually go on the Makon Ha'mikdash as the  Rambam adds that "I went into the Great Holy Building and I prayed there" so he must have gone into the mosque itself. B) Today we have greater knowledge where exactly the Bais Ha'Mikdash stood because of the Archaeological digs of Charles Warren in 1867, and so we know the areas on the Har Habayis that are permitted. Moreover, we have records that Jews went up to the Har Habyis after the destruction of the Second Bais Hamikdash. According to Rabbi Wein, Jews  went up to the Har Habyis during the times of the Rishonim, and not one Gadol at the time said that it was prohibited.

The gedoilim that prohibit going on the Har Habayis may have not known of the existence of these letters. The Poiskim alive today totally ignore the Rambam's experience because none of them is brave enough to come out and discuss this. Many of these poiskim that prohibit are only prohibiting because they are afraid to antagonize the Arabs. This argument has been proven false more times than you can count. If Jews would stop going up to the Har Habayis, the Arabs would find other excuses to kill Jews. Why were they killing Jews when the Jordanians had the Har Habyis from 1948-1967, when not one Jew entered anywhere close to the Har Habyis?
Arabs don't need excuses to kill Jews, they murdered Jews before we had the Kotel, Mearas Ha'machpeilah, Kever Rachel.

My "taaneh" to Rabbi Hoffman is that he was disingenuous in his analysis, omitting the above important ideas that directly oppose his Yeshivishe agenda to satisfy the tiger nipping at his heals. He is a coward!

By Rabbi Yair Hoffman for 5tjt.com

Recently, it was widely reported that Ben Shapiro and others travelled to and entered he Temple Mount. While the sentiment that lies behind his action is certainly admirable in that he wishes to ensure Jewish sovereignty over har habayis, the action itself lies in stark contrast to the position of the great poskim of the generation, Rav Edelstein shlita, Rav Elyashiv zatzal, Rav Chaim zatzal, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt”l, and so many others. What follows is a halachic analysis of why we should not, at this point, be praying on the Har Habayis. The author feels bad because Ben Shapiro is someone that the author admires greatly.

No Achdus Between Degel HaTorah & Agudat Yisrael..They Will Probably Split

With less than 100 days to go to elections, disputes have broken out in the UTJ party between its current head, MK Moshe Gafni of the Degel HaTorah Lithuanian faction, and the Chassidic Agudat Yisrael faction.

According to years-old agreements, the two factions rotate leadership of the party over election cycles, which should mean that Agudat Yisrael takes the lead in the run-up to elections this winter. However, now that veteran Knesset member Yaakov Litzman has resigned, the leadership of the Agudat Yisrael faction has passed into the hands of Yitzhak Goldknopf, the representative of the Gur Chassidic group, the largest within Agudat Yisrael, leading MK Gafni to protest that a man with no political experience whatsoever should not be leading the party into elections.

Gafni would therefore like to see his own tenure at the head of the party extended for the meantime; furthermore, he wants the 50:50 arrangement between the two factions of UTJ altered to 60:40 in Degel HaTorah's favor, arguing that changes in haredi demographics justify this.

Meanwhile, another dispute is continuing to simmer between Rabbi Gershon Edelstein, the spiritual head of the Degel HaTorah faction, and the Belz Chassidic group (represented by MK Yisrael Eichler of Agudat Yisrael) regarding changes made to boys' schools within the Belz Chassidic group, increasing the hours spent studying mathematics and introducing English into the curriculum.

The two factions have run together in elections for years to ensure that both pass the electoral threshold, but disputes are nothing new, and this year haredi politicians have also expressed the concern that votes may "leak" to the Otzma Yehudit party of MK Itamar Ben Gvir, possibly even losing UTJ a seat to the Religious Zionism party with which Ben Gvir is allied.

Spectacular rare coin from the time of Emperor Antoninus & Rabbi Yehuda Ha'Nasie

An exceptionally well-preserved spectacular rare bronze coin was recently recovered from the sea bed during an underwater archaeological survey conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority off the Carmel coast at Haifa.

The coin was minted under the emperor Antoninus Pius (138–161 CE) in Alexandria, Egypt. The reverse depicts the zodiac sign Cancer beneath a portrait of the moon goddess Luna. The coin bears the date ‘Year eight,’ the eighth year of Antoninus Pius’s rule, or 144/145 CE. It belongs to a series of thirteen coins, twelve depicting the different signs of the zodiac and another the complete zodiac wheel.

According to Israel Antiquities Authority Maritime Archaeology Unit director Jacob Sharvit, “This is the first time such a coin has been discovered off Israel’s coast and it is a rare addition to the National Treasures collection. Israel’s Mediterranean shores and waters have yielded many archaeological sites and finds that attest to connections in antiquity between Mediterranean ports and the countries along it.”

“These finds, which were lost at sea and disappeared from sight for hundreds and thousands of years, have been remarkably well preserved; some are extremely rare and their discovery completes parts of the historical puzzle of the country’s past.”

The coin was discovered during a survey conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority to locate, document, research, and preserve antiquities sites and ancient finds — cultural assets that are being endangered by accelerated marine development.

According to Israel Antiquities Authority’s Director, Eli Eskosido, “In the last decade, the State of Israel has changed its perception of the sea. Rather than marking the country’s border, the sea is now recognized as an integral part of it in terms of its cultural heritage, in addition to security considerations and strategic and economic concerns. Israel’s territorial waters contain natural resources and cultural assets that must be explored and protected in light of different interests and potential development. The maritime survey off Haifa is part of this process. The rare coin recovered during the survey is a vivid reminder of the importance of the survey.”

Interestingly, the ruler who minted the coin, Antoninus Pius, was a Roman emperor who ruled between 138 and 161 CE. Unlike his predecessors, he was not a military man and never participated in battle. His reign was the quietest during the whole of the Roman Empire and marked the height of the period of “Roman peace” (Pax Romana) throughout the empire. Antoninus had a different approach to running the Roman Empire, preferring to deal with any foreign crises through provincial governors; in fact, he never left Rome himself. He encouraged and initiated the construction of temples, theaters, and magnificent mausoleums, and promoted science and philosophy.

During his rule, the empire’s relations with the Jews were greatly improved, the decrees of Hadrian were revoked, and Jews were allowed to practice circumcision. These steps led to amicable relations between the emperor and Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi.
