Bnei Brak & Yerushalyim lead in number of coronavirus patients in Israel

The cities of Bnei Brak and Jerusalem, with their many Charedi (ultra-Orthodox) residents, lead the nation in numbers of coronavirus patients with 267 and 352 respectively, Channel 12 reported on Friday.

It is thought that a small minority among the community finds it difficult to adjust to the new Health Ministry regulations as they forbid mass prayer, large weddings and studying in big groups – all of which are vital to the Charedi way of life.

The largely secular city of Tel Aviv, that has more than double the number of residents than Bnei Brak, is tied for second with 267 patients. This despite social media posts alleging that the residents of the first Hebrew city are lax in their social distancing and can’t give up their daily jogs and drinking coffee at the beach.

On Hebrew social media, a great deal of anger was expressed at some Tel Avivians for allegedly for not caring about the well being of the elderly, who are much more vulnerable to coronavirus, and insensitivity to the great number of people who are facing unemployment now due to the COVID-19 impact on the world economy.

Such ideas seem to predate the virus. Israelis often imagine Tel Aviv as being a city which is slightly hedonistic and self-absorbed like other cities in the world – such as Paris or New York are imagined in certain ways in France and the US.

Ashkelon is number four with 78 patients, Bat Yam was ranked five with 51 patients, Efrat and Haifa had 44 patients, and Beersheba had 43 patients.

The small Jewish religious community of Kiryat Ye'arim outside of Jerusalem had a local outbreak with 30 patients reported so far. Beitar Elit had 23 patients and Zikhron Ya'akov was at the bottom with 12 patients.

Sasregen Shul in Flatbush To Dr Stuart Ditchek .... "Go To Hell"

Dr Stuart Ditchek, the one on the front lines of that dreaded virus, drove by the Sasregen Shul on 24th Street and Avenue M this week,, where the big "machers" daven and saw to his astonishment that there were minyanim there ..."like nothing happened."

So he went into the shul asking to speak to the Holy Rebbe ....
Some bigshot "attorney"shoved him out the door... and told him in front of the Aron Koidesh and in front of the "machers" with tefillin on their heads ...to
"Go to Hell"

The "machers" are confident that the virus won't dare infect them... after all they are the "Sasregen Machers"....

However, someone should tell the Rebbe of Sasragen ....
that the Malach Hamovas doesn't give a damn how big their homes are ..... it can infect anyone from the homeless old lady on the streets of Bankok to the Fancy shaven guy with the bekesha....

One never knows who is going to "go to hell" first!

"Red Eyes" Telltale Sign Of Corona Virus

A new symptom of the coronavirus has emerged which could aid in identifying patients with the contagious disease.

Nurse Chelsey Earnest is a life care worker who was called in to help at the Life Care Center in Kirkland,Washington which has been hardest hit by COVID-19, with 36 patients and one visitor having died at the facility. Earnest told CNN that as she worked with coronavirus patients, she began to notice that the sickest ones had a single thing in common.

“It’s something that I witnessed in all of them,” Earnest said. “They have, like … allergy eyes. The white part of the eye is not red. It’s more like they have red eye shadow on the outside of their eyes. But we’ve had patients who’ve just had the red eyes as the only symptom we saw and they go to go the hospital and pass away,” ”
Rapid breathing and a cough were the other two hallmarks, she said. But to a person, everyone infected with coronavirus at the Kirkland care facility that proved to the be outbreak’s epicenter in Washington State had the distinct “red eye” look of allergy sufferers, nurses recounted Tuesday to CNN.

The radical irresponsibility of the Israeli Rabbinate

by Tanya White
"The greatest, holiest religious act of moral responsibility we are called to do today is simply to sit at home and do nothing -- it really isn't that hard"
I keep asking myself:
in 50 years time, when our grandchildren learn about the “coronavirus” period of history, what will they be asking us?
What will be the greatest take away message for the next generation from the moment of history that we currently find ourselves in?
And I keep hearing in my head the almost horrified and surprised voice of my grandchild,
“But I don’t understand why would people not have just stayed indoors? Why did the rabbis insist on keeping the shuls open? Why would young people not have seen the damage they were doing and kept to the rules – did they not realize they were issuing a death warrant for hundreds and thousands of innocent people?”
Ours is a post-truth world — an era that has seen the erosion of truth and with it the loss of morality and individual responsibility which has manifested itself in one of two ways.
 Either the clinging on to the status quo absolutism of an age gone-by, bolstered by fear and lack of courage to reinterpret reality accordingly;
or the shedding of any value system and hence a slippery slope towards individual hedonism, egocentricity and disavowal of any shared moral responsibility.
It is both these mindsets that have stoked the flames of the fire that humanity is battling at this time. One from the side of certain religious institutions that refuse to paradigm shift and let go of the existing structures to ensure life trumps all else,
and the other from self-interested youth and others whose inability to see beyond the narrow confines of their own self-centered existence means they are sacrificing many around them; the expectation that their country will bail them out by sending a plane to rescue them, but refusing to be part of the war effort in return.

Breaking ............Blue & White Breaks Up With Yair Lapid, Joining Likud In Unity Government

There is major political drama unfolding in Israel, as Benny Gantz of Blue and White appears to be breaking away from Yair Lapid and set to join a unity government with Likud and the Religious parties.

Benny Gantz Voted In As Speaker of Knesset With Netanyahu's Blessing!
It began with the sudden resignation of Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein on Wednesday. A close Netanyahu ally, Edelstein had refused to comply with a high court order to convene the plenum for a vote on his successor the same day, angrily accusing the court of an “arrogant intervention” in the legislative branch. Even in stepping down, Edelstein tried to stall the vote for several days, as his resignation would take effect 48 hours later.
On Thursday, Benny Gantz submitted candidacy for himself to be Knesset Speaker, but Yair Lapid had plans of his own to submit candidacy for Meir Cohen to be the Speaker.
Immediately, the entire right-wing bloc quickly endorsed Gantz for Speaker, leaving Lapid out in the dust.
According to Channel 12, the emerging unity coalition will include the Labor party, which will split from the Meretz party.
Gantz will be the foreign minister, and Netanyahu for the first 18 months, followed by Gantz for the next 18 months.

DIN's Take .... Parshat Va'Yikrah

In this week's parsha .... Va'Yikrah ....you will notice that the very first word Vayikra,  ויקרא is spelled with a small "alef" "א"

Many explanations have been given for this phenomenon. Most commentators see it as an expression of Moshe's humility. Although he reached the highest levels of sanctity and closeness to Hashem, he chose to downplay his role in the matter.

The Zohar Hakodosh, however, offers a completely different answer, one that puts the entire sefer Vayikra in perspective.

He sees the small alef as a sign of imperfection:

"Why is there a small alef? Because this "calling" was imperfect.
Why so?
For it took place in the Mishkan and in a foreign land.
[True] perfection can only be found in the Land of Israel"
(Tosafot HaZohar 1, quoted in Itturei Torah, vol 3 p.7)

Let us contemplate this Zohar for a moment...
There was probably never a period in Jewish history during which the Jewish people enjoyed a more intimate relationship with Hashem than the 40 year journey through the desert.
Heavenly clouds surrounded them on all sides, protecting them from the elements. Their clothes grew with them and never wore out.
Celestial food was delivered to them every day. They were led by the greatest prophet ever to live, and he was readily available to answer questions and give advice on religious matters.

Do you qualify for a stimulus check in Senate’s coronavirus response bill?

One of the cornerstones of the Senate coronavirus stimulus package is the direct payment of money from the federal government to American individuals and families.
In the middle of the bill's hundreds of pages are details regarding exactly who can expect to receive money and how much they can expect. Here is a breakdown.
Who is eligible?
The bill makes clear that everyone is eligible except for nonresident aliens and those who can be used as the basis for deductions for another person.
"Seniors, veterans, the unemployed and low-income Americans would be eligible too," Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said Wednesday.
The bill text indicates those who receive social security can collect checks: For those not required to file 2018 or 2019 tax returns because of social security benefits, tax returns aren’t required to claim the money -- the government can use information from a Form SSA-1099, Social Security Benefit Statement, or Form RRB-1099, Social Security Equivalent Benefit Statement.
With that in mind, here is how much people can expect to get.
