I am writing this as a response to the articles posted on the news and social media of violence on El Al 002 from JFK.

I was on that flight and as I type this, I am in Athens airport waiting to board my 11:30 p.m. flight back to Tel Aviv. (Which is another point: Why cannot they get a flight earlier? We all have to work tomorrow and will not get back until 2 a.m.!)

I am not Haredi, just a religious man who keeps Shabbat, and neither were most of the 200 of us who got off the plane in Athens rather than desecrate Shabbat. Maybe 20 percent Haredi at most.

Chabad here were fantastic and a potentially horrible Shabbat was memorable.

I did not see any violence on the flight after the captain announced the change of destination, although clearly I wasn’t watching every part of the plane all the time. If there was, then that is inexcusable.

I saw: disappointment, anger, raised voices, for sure.

Understandably. We all had plans for Shabbat. None of us wanted to be in Athens.

However: El Al, take responsibility for your actions. You were the problem here:

The mishnah on this daf states that if a child should bring a sacrifice then the mitzvah of "Smicha (leaning)" is not performed.

But when does a child ever brings a korban? 

A child is not obligated in performing any mitzvois and if he wishes to bring a korban, we do not accept it?

Commentaries explain that there are cases that this can indeed occur ....

A child whose father died and who while he was alive designated an animal for a korban and before he had a chance to fulfill his mitzvah he died ... the son even if he is only a  child is obligated to fulfill his late father's wishes and offer this sacrifice.

Commentaries add another situation.....

in a case where the child is a "metzorah" afflicted with leprosy, in that case once he gets healed, his father can offer a sacrifice on his behalf.

The incident occurred around 9pm Tuesday evening on McDonald and 18th Ave. 

A frum Jewish taxi driver with a huge Yarlmukah had a medical emergency and crashed his car, hitting a few parked cars and a pole. One of the cars hit was owned by a Boro Park Shomrim member who called 911 as well as Hatzolah.

First responders on scene say the driver was confused and disoriented, still attempting to drive away.

Other Bloggers saying that the Cops were "abusive" because they "cursed" him .....

Frum 67 Jewish Woman Pistol-whipped, Robbed While Shopping In Miami

North Miami Beach police are searching for two men who robbed an Orthodox Jewish woman at gunpoint last week outside a supermarket.

The robbery was reported shortly before 4 p.m. Friday in the rear parking lot of the South Florida Kosher Market at 1324 NE 163rd St.

According to an incident report, the 67-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was walking back to her car from the supermarket when she was approached by two men who ordered her to hand over her purse.

Police said the woman refused and a struggle ensued. One of the men, who was armed with a handgun, pushed the woman into her Toyota Camry and the robbers snatched $1,000 in cash from her purse.

The woman, who normally uses a cane due to arthritis and other injuries, wasn’t carrying it with her at the time of the robbery.

“This guy is on my right side. This guy is on my left side. He takes the gun, and he starts hitting me, hits my head with the gun, hit my shoulder and my back also,” she told WSVN news.

The victim was also hit on the top of her head, leaving a gash.

“He hit me a few times with the gun, so my whole face swelled up,” she said.

Chareidi Soldiers Exited Bus One Minute Before Hamas Rocket Blew It Up

According to the IDF the bus that brought the soldiers down to the area, dropped off groups of Chareidie soldiers in different locations as was pre-planned by the IDF. The last stop was near the border, opposite a town in Gaza known as Jabaliya, located in the northern segment of the Gaza Strip.

The last soldiers to leave the bus gathered their gear and headed to the appointed meetup spot in the nearby thicket of woods. The bus driver parked the bus by the side of the road and proceeded to exit the bus and walk away for a much needed break.

A few short minutes after the driver left the bus, an anti-tank missile struck a direct hit on the bus, causing it to erupt in flames. One soldier, aged 19, who was not among the passengers, was severely injured in the resulting explosion.

The soldier transported to the trauma center in Soroka hospital for treatment and surgery.

The bus had been filled with Chareidie soldiers who are residents of Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, Ashdod, Netivot, Beer Sheva, Afula and other cities.

Israel under fire .... Over 370 rockets

A bus on the Israeli side of the border was struck by gunfire from the Gaza Strip Monday afternoon, the IDF stated.

The bus was reportedly empty at the time of the attack.

In addition, red alert sirens sounded across southern Israel as dozens of rockets were fired at Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip. Sirens have been heard in Sderot, Netivot, the Be'er Sheva area, and the Sdot Negev, Ashkelon Beach, Shaar Hanegev and Eshkol councils.

The IDF has identified at least 370 rocket launches from the Gaza Strip. A number of rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.

Sirens were reported as far east as the Judean desert and the Dead Sea area.

A 19-year-old man was seriously wounded in a mortar attack on an Israeli community in the Gaza periphery. United Hatzalah reported that ten people have been treated for injuries received from rocket shrapnel and for shock.

Gaza officials have reported that the IDF struck a Hamas observation post in the northern Gaza Strip Monday afternoon. No casualties were reported in the strike on the observation post.

The violence follows a skirmish Sunday in which seven Hamas terrorists were killed, including Nur Barakeh, commander of the eastern battalion of Hamas’ Izz Al-Din Al-Qassam Brigades in Khan Yunis. An IDF Lieutenant Colonel was also killed in the gunfight.

The Hamas terrorist organization has claimed responsibility for the rocket barrage.

The Prime Minister's Office stated that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is currently conducting security consultations with the Minister of Defense, the Chief of Staff and senior members of the defense establishment and the IDF at the Krya, the IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv.

Rabbi Yechezekel Wolff Tells His Congregants to "Go to Hell"

The rabbi of a historic Chelsea synagogue wished his own congregants would “go to hell” as he turned their sanctuary into a “discotheque” and tried to freeze out elderly members, a lawsuit brought by his congregation claims.

Facing a dwindling attendance and mounting repair bills for their 100-year-old synagogue, members of Congregation Emunath Israel on W. 23rd St. cut a deal with Rabbi Yechezekel Wolff in 2012, wherein Wolff would lease the building in exchange for paying the shul’s operating expenses and raising at least $400,000 for building repairs by the end of 2018.

But he hasn’t held up his end of the deal, according to a $21 million lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court by five members of the temple’s board of trustees.

Wolff has made some repairs, but he’s done damage by ripping out historic pews, cutting the heating in the winter to allegedly “kill off the congregation” and allowing secular film crews and art exhibits to use the synagogue, the suit charges.

Portions of the diary of a Jewish girl living in Poland during the Holocaust were published in English for the first time this week, over 76 years after she was murdered by the Nazis.

Renia Spiegel was 15 years old when she began the journal in January 1939, living in the small southeastern Polish city of Przemysl with her grandparents. The Nazis invaded Poland in September of that year, after agreeing to divide up the country with the Soviets.

Spiegel’s 8-year-old sister, Ariana, who lived with their mother in Warsaw, was visiting Renia in Przemysl when the war began and the city came under Soviet control, with thousands of its Jews deported to labor camps in Siberia and the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in Russia’s Far East

“Heard the jangling of keys, a gate being opened. They went in. I waited some more. Then they came out, taking loads of people with them, children, old people… The whole night was horrific. I couldn’t wait for the dawn to come,” Spiegel wrote on July 6, 1940, about the Soviet roundup of Jews.

Child Struck By School Bus In Monsey On Sunday Morning

A child was struck by a school bus in the Monsey area on Sunday morning.

The incident happened at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Route 306 just before 10:00AM. Rockland Hatzolah transported the child to Westchester Medical Center in stable condition.

The bus, belonging to a local Cheder, remained on the scene.

Police were investigating the incident

There is a run off for  Mayor of Yerusalyim on Tuesday all because the Chareidim did not vote for their own Rabbinical endorsed Chareidie candidate, Yossi Deitch!

In a stunning upset, Deitch only got 17% of the vote ..... which confirms the theory that Chareidim are no longer listening to the Rabbinical leaders .... and have figured out that when their Leaders scream that the "Torah Requires You Vote for the Charedie Deitch," that they are lying....
they did a search from entire Written and Oral Torah and couldn't find one verse commanding them to vote for a Chareidie!
And so when the election came last week, Chareidim dumped the Chareidie candidate in the proverbial garbage dump, stuck their middle fingers at their leaders and instead either stayed home like the Arabs or  split their vote between the "want to be frum guy Moshe Leon" and the secular Offer Berkovich! 

It is regular practice in Israeli politics for rabbis to meet politicians and secure concessions in return for an endorsement. The rabbis then order their followers to the polls in mass numbers, making them a serious political force.  

But the dynamics is changing as more and more ultra-Orthodox men are working, rather than devoting themselves to full-time studying the Talmud. Small numbers are also serving in the army alongside fellow their Israelis. Both developments may ease secular resentment of the ultra-Orthodox, who are widely seen as not contributing to the country’s future. 

Mr Berkovitch is hopeful that this scenario will play out in the city he hopes to lead. 

“There are major changes in the ultra-Orthodox community which allow for co-existence,” he said. “It’s not the old ultra-Orthodox we knew before. Many more of them are open-minded and want to live together.”

So now there will be a runoff and may the best guy win!

"Producing the Oil Used In The Menorah of the Temple" 

There was a requirement that the Menorah in the Temple were supposed to be lit with the finest olive oil.

The mishna on this daf relates that there were 3 periods throughout the year when they picked olives off the trees, and the mishna determines the degree of purity used in the menorah.

The olives that are found on top of the trees ripens first since they are exposed to the sun all day....

They would gather those olives first, crush them and place them in a basket; the oil that dripped out of those crushed olives were fit  for the menorah, since this oil is the finest quality olive oil.

After the oil dripped out of the olives, the olives were then placed in a heavy olive press and crushed under this heavy weight......

the oil produced from this production was no longer fit for the menorah, because it wasn't the finest oil, it was, however, fit for the menachois.

The crushed olives were then ground to produce more oil. 

After a while the olives found in the middle of the tree ripened and went thru the above mentioned process. The first oil produced from this middle batch was fit to be used in the menorah as well.

The olives found on the bottom of the tree, were then gathered, but these olives never properly ripened on the tree and had to be taken and spread out on a roof to be exposed to the sun so that they ripen fully.

5 Injured In Ramat Beit Shemesh Bus Crash

Five people were injured on Thursday evening after a bus drove up onto a sidewalk and ran into a lampost on Hayarkon Street in Ramat Beit Shemesh Aleph.

Emergency medical service volunteers from United Hatzalah in Beit Shemesh rushed to the scene and treated those injured in the crash. Among the injured was a young woman who was light-to-moderately injured as well as four other people who sustained light injuries.

Residents of the neighborhood told Israeli media that the accident occurred on a major intersection and has numerous Talmudei Torah and Michlalot nearby and that hundreds of young students walk by that traffic junction every day. “If today had not been Rosh Chodesh when schools get out early, the accident could have had much worse consequences,” the residents said in a Kikar Shabbos Interview.

Chapter head of United Hatzalah in the city David Leff said: “When I arrived at the scene of the accident, I recognized that this was simply a miracle that no one suffered any worse injuries.”

LA Wig Snatcher Arrested

Los Angeles police have arrested a man who they say has been snatching wigs off the heads of Orthodox Jewish women in North Hollywood, California.

The suspect was arrested at a home in Encino based on a tip investigators received after releasing video and images of the perpetrator earlier in the day Wednesday, Los Angeles police officials said.

Police believe the man, whose name was not immediately released, targeted the women because of their faith and are investigating it as a hate crime. He was seen being taken into the Police department’s North Hollywood station in handcuffs Wednesday night.

R’ Naftali Rhodes Killed by Car in Far Rockaway

Tragedy struck the Far Rockaway / Lawrence Community on Thursday, as word spread of a young Jewish man who was struck and killed by a vehicle.

Rockaway-Lawrence Hatzolah were called to Central Avenue and the 878 at around 2:30PM, after receiving multiple calls reporting a pedestrian struck. They found the victim in traumatic arrest. 

Hatzolah Paramedics worked on him, and he was rushed to St John’s Hospital Hospital. Doctors did everything they could to save his life, but he was unfortunately Niftar a short while later.

He has been identified as R’ Naftali Rhodes Z”L, 33, a resident of Far Rockaway, NY, and a father of 2 children. He is a son of Rav Dovid Rhodes, the Rosh Yeshiva of Torah Metzion in Great Neck, Long Island.

Nassau County Police say the vehicle remained on the scene, and an investigation is underway.The Achiezer Organization is working closely with Police and the family.

The Levaya will be held on Friday morning 
Rhodes’ funeral will be held Friday morning at 9:30 AM at Agudath Israel of Long Island in Far Rockaway.
