Judge Freier responds to Netflix's 'Unorthodox' ....
Judge Ruchie (Rachel) Freier from Brooklyn New York is a Kings County Civil Court Judge, a volunteer paramedic and director of Ezras Nashim, the all women’s Basic Life Support First Response Agency.
Freier joined a special video online discussion and related to the Netflix "Unorthodox" mini-series, which brings the story of a Hasidic young woman from New York who decides to leave her family, home and way of life.
Judge Freier wrote about the series in an op-ed in the Satmar "Vos Is Neias" website.
"A good friend from the broader Jewish community who saw the movie called me and asked “Are all Hasidic marriages arranged and begin loveless?” Frieier writes, "This propelled me to watch it and determine its accuracy".
Freier noted that the production is fiction, but is based on a memoir written by Deborah Feldman with the same name.
"Perhaps it reflects the experience of one woman", Freier wrote, "and in doing so unwittingly or intentionally depicts Hasidic men as either naïve or shysters and women as subjugated, unloved, uneducated, unhappy and without opportunity".

Calmeyer is remembered for saving thousands of Jews. A Holocaust survivor says he sent her to Auschwitz.
In his native Germany and beyond, Hans Calmeyer is celebrated as a hero who saved more Jews from the Holocaust than Oskar Schindler.
As a jurist for the Nazi German forces in the Netherlands, Calmeyer was put in charge of a small team that evaluated pleas by people who tried to save themselves by disputing their classification as Jews.
According to Israel’s national Holocaust museum Yad Vashem, Calmeyer’s actions in his post, which involved accepting many of these pleas — some were quite flimsy — saved at least 3,000 people.
In 1992, Yad Vashem posthumously recognized Calmeyer, who died in 1972, as a Righteous Among the Nations, Israel’s title for non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews.
Yet in recent months, these honors are being challenged — including by a 92-year-old survivor and her family, who say that Calmeyer had her sent to Auschwitz and threatened to deport her non-Jewish father when they pleaded with him to save her.
Survivor Femma Fleijsman told this story in a new book and a television documentary that was aired Monday by the Jewish Programming division of the EO broadcaster in the Netherlands.

Israeli Malls, Markets and Gyms Open after Six Weeks
Malls, outdoor markets and gyms reopened Thursday morning after over six weeks of closure, as Israel’s numbers of daily new cases of the novel coronavirus remained in the low dozens.
In Jerusalem, patrons lined up early Thursday outside the Mahane Yehuda market, where guards checked their temperature before allowing them to enter, and made sure the market was not overcrowded.
“Keep to the guidelines in order to ensure that we can continue working in the market and that the shop owners will be able to sell and make their living,” Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion urged shoppers.
“This is a day of celebration for Mahane Yehuda,” said Tali Friedman, a union representative for the shop owners, according to the Walla news site. “The market is open and we hope it remains open [even] if the infection numbers rise in Israel, that we won’t be shut down.”
Pini Tzidkiyahu, who runs a fruit store in the market, told Army Radio: “We will protect the public’s health. The fruit is only in boxes, everyone is wearing gloves and everyone who needs a mask gets one.”
In Tel Aviv, the Carmel and Levinsky markets reopened Thursday morning, along with several other open-air markets in Haifa and Beersheba.
Thursday’s openings were announced on Monday as part of a raft of eased coronavirus restrictions announced on Monday, most of which have already taken effect.
Shoppers were also reported to arrive at shopping malls throughout the country.

Dumb Sucidal Jews Ignore the Democrats’ Rising Anti-Semitism
Of the seventeen members of the House who voted against the anti-Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions of Israel and stood with Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, sixteen were Democrats.
Let that sink in, because some three-quarters of Jewish voters blindly vote for the Democrats. They will rationalize this outcome by saying that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi kept the boycotters in check.
But if Jewish voters look closely at the demographics of those 16 members of the House, they will see the face of the changing character of the Democrat Party.
Congresswoman Tlaib, who took the oath of office on the Koran and celebrated her victory by wrapping herself in the Palestinian flag, knew her earlier attempt to get the House to pass a Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions bill had no chance of success.
The point, of course, was not to get the bill passed, no more than BDS hate-fests on American campuses are about getting a BDS policy enacted.

Children Hospitalized In NYS With Mysterious Shock-Like Illness Jumps To 64
A total of 64 children have now been hospitalized in New York State with a rare, shock-like, life-threatening inflammatory syndrome potentially associated with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), health officials said.
That new number reported Wednesday, May 6 has increased from a total of 15 a day earlier. Those 15 cases were all in New York City. The newly reported 64 cases are statewide.
The mysterious disease, first reported in the United Kingdom and other European countries nearly two weeks ago, is multi-system inflammatory syndrome. Symptoms have been "characterized by persistent fever and features of Kawasaki disease and/or toxic shock syndrome; abdominal symptoms common."
The first 15 children hospitalized "had a subjective or measured fever and more than half reported rash, abdominal pain, vomiting, or diarrhea," the NYC health department said. "Respiratory symptoms were reported in less than half of these patients."
Cases are now also being reported in Atlanta, Detroit and the District of Connecticut.
The New York Health Department issued an alert Wednesday afternoon to all healthcare facilities, clinical labs and local health departments in the state to inform providers of the condition as well as to provide testing and reporting guidance.
Any suspected cases of pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome in people under the age of 21 must be reported to the State Department of Health.
"Though most children who get COVID-19 experience only mild symptoms, in the United Kingdom, a possible link has also been reported between pediatric COVID-19 and serious inflammatory disease," the health department's alert said. "The inflammatory syndrome has features which overlap with Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome and may occur days to weeks after acute COVID-19 illness.
"It can include persistent fever, abdominal symptoms, rash, and even cardiovascular symptoms requiring intensive care. Early recognition by pediatricians and referral to a specialist including to critical care is essential."
Kawasaki disease (KD) , also known as Kawasaki syndrome or mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome. It is a rare childhood illness with symptoms including high temperature that lasts for five days or longer, swollen glands in the neck, rashes and redness in the eyes.
