In the Style of Nazis .. Washington Post Cartoonist Draws GOP As Rats

On Friday, The Washington Post published a cartoon by its “editorial cartoonist,” Ann Telnaes, that depicted what she called “All of the state attorneys general and U.S. Congress members who collaborated with President Trump in his attempt to subvert the Constitution and stay in office” as rats.

US dollar in freefall against shekel

The US dollar rallied somewhat against the shekel on Monday morning, hitting NIS 3.426 after plummeting to 3.23 on Friday. This marks the lowest point for the US currency since 1996.

The euro also dropped and was trading at 3.955 against the shekel.

The Bank of Israel has stepped up its acquisition of USD since November in an attempt to stem the decline in the demand for the dollar.

Reb Yaakov Levitz Friend of DIN Succumbs to Covid-19

It is with great sadness that DIN reports the petirah of Rabbi Yaakov Levitz z”l.

Rabbi Levitz contracted Covid-19 and had been hospitalized in critical condition.

Rabbi Levitz was renowned as the owner of Im Hasefer, distributing seforim to retailers for over three decades.

Rabbi Levitz was not just a seforim expert. A talmid chochom in his own right, he exuded ahavas haTorah and ahavas Yisroel and displayed a remarkable passion for his profession.

On average, Rabbi Levitz would distribute several new seforim every single week, providing stores with approximately 150 new seforim each year.

Rabbi Levitz became the conduit between American and Israeli bnei Torah and talmidei chachomim, ensuring that their publications and seforim reached the masses.

Rabbi Levitz is survived by his wife and father, including his sons, R’ Binyamin Levitz, R’ Uriel Levitz, R’ Chaim Levitz, and R’ Yitzchok Levitz.

The aron will then be flown to Eretz Yisroel for kevurah there.

$600 Stimulus Checks On the Way

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced on Sunday that a deal for “COVID-19 relief” valued at “nearly $900 billion” of federal government spending had been reached by congressional leadership.

McConnell’s remarks on the Senate floor regarding a “major rescue package” “with targeted policies to help struggling Americans” did not include any mention of lockdowns or shutdowns — ostensibly for public health purposes — of businesses or other operations

McConnell said the spending bill would “provide huge sums for the logistics” of distributing vaccines for the coronavirus.”

“Speaking of vaccines, we can’t nullify the success of Operation Warp Speed by falling asleep at the switch on distribution,” McConnel stated. “So this agreement will provide huge sums for the logistics that will get these life-saving shots to our citizens as fast as possible.”

Politico reported that the legislative text is not yet available for the public to review. Its report omitted any mention of lockdown or shutdown decrees.

Politico also reported that the legislative agreement will provide “a $300 boost in weekly unemployment benefits for 11 weeks [and] $600 relief checks for adults and children.” Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) are both calling for $1,200 checks to be sent out as “direct payments.”

Cuomo bars diners from bathrooms, causing panic

When you gotte go .. you gotte go ...yes? Not so fast!

Big Apple eatery owners — already struggling to cope with a second shutdown of indoor dining amid the coronavirus pandemic — were thrown into a panic Thursday night when the Cuomo administration dropped new rules that barred patrons in outdoor spaces from using their indoor bathrooms.

The initial guidance, released publicly by Kapil Longani, counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio, stated that “customers are not allowed to enter the inside of an SLA-licensed establishment for any reason while the guidance is in effect.”

To the dismay of some eatery owners, the guidance indicated that even the bathrooms would be off-limits.

“If my SLA-licensed establishment is offering outdoor dining, may I allow customers to use the bathroom inside?” reads one of the questions on the document.

“No,” the reply states. “Customers may not enter the inside of the establishment for any reason.”

The regulation threw one city restaurant, Il Posto Accanto on the Lower East Side, into a tailspin.

“The NYSLA new guidance for indoor dining states that customers may not enter the restaurant to use the restroom!!!” said a post on the eatery’s Instagram page. “Please Contact Governor Cuomo and all of our elected officials….This is not human!!!!!”

Andrew Rigie, executive director of the New York City Hospitality Alliance, blasted the guidance as “another example of why restaurants and bars feel like government is purposely kicking them in the gut and then stopping on their hand when they’re already down.”

Free Speech Victory: Judges Rule Social Media Users Have Right to Offend

England’s High Court has struck a rare victory for free speech, overturning the conviction of a Twitter user who called a transgender person a man and ruling that people have a right to offend others online.

Mother of two Kate Scottow had been convicted under a section of the Communications Act which makes “persistently making use of a public electronic communications network to cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety to another” a crime following an argument with lawyer and trans activist Stephanie Hayden, who is legally a woman according to a gender certificate obtained in 2017.

Kate Scottow was arrested by three police officers at her home in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, late last year as her then ten-year-old daughter and 20-month-old son looked on. Her arrest followed complaints from transgender campaigner Stephanie Hayden

District judge Margaret Dodds decided that Mrs Scottow had broken the “rule’” to “be kind to each other and not call each other names”, but Lord Justice Bean and Mr Justice Warby at the Divisional Court of the High Court overturned her judgement as “deficient” and “flawed” on appeal.

“The Judge appears to have considered that a criminal conviction was merited for acts of unkindness and calling others names,” said Mr Justice Warby,  but “A prosecution under section 127(2)c [of the Communications Act] for online speech is plainly an interference by the state with the defendant’s Convention right to freedom of expression.”

The senior judges said that if the case had “been approached by the [original] Judge in a legally correct manner, it should have been dismissed”.

Neturei Karta Biting The Hand That Feeds Them Curse Satmar Rebbe R' Zalman Leib Teitelbaum

הקנאים נגד הזאלוני מקללים אותו בימח שמו

As they say "always be careful for what you pray for .... you might very well get answered"

The Neturei Karta a group that Satmar endorsed and funded for years  ...
turned  around and cursed the anti-Israel  Satmar Rebbe, Reb Zalman Leib Teitelbaum using words of "Yemach Shemo" a phrase reserved for Haman and Hitler.....

There is no difference in ideology between Satmar and Neturei Karta vis a vis the State of Israel ....
Both groups demonstrate publicly against Israel in front of goyim that hate them as well.....

Why they turned on their leader ... ?
Only G-d knows....

I can guess that  it's because the Satmar Rebbe while publicly condemning the secular English curriculum imposed on the moisdois .... is secretly embracing it, albeit reluctantly, so he doesn't lose Federal and State funds..

As Ilhan Omar famously said...
"It's all about the Benjamins"

The Jews of Morocco, FDR, and the Nazis: A Troubling Episode

The normalization of relations between Israel and Morocco and the U.S. recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara have stirred interest in the history of Morocco’s Jews, including during the Holocaust years.

Unfortunately, some pundits, in their enthusiasm over these developments, have misleadingly portrayed the Allied liberation of North Africa in 1942 as the simultaneous liberation of the region’s Jews from their Nazi and Vichyite persecutors.

That narrative papers over the harsh reality of what happened after the Allies’ victory. The full story of how President Franklin D. Roosevelt treated the Jews in Morocco and elsewhere in North Africa is a deeply troubling chapter in his administration’s history. On November 8, 1942, American and British forces launched “Operation Torch,” the invasion of German-occupied Algeria and Morocco. In just eight days, the Allies defeated the Nazis and their Vichy French partners in the region.

American Jews expected that the liberation of North Africa would also mean liberation for the 330,000 Jews there.

Esther Hurgan Mother Of 6 Brutally Murdered In Shomron Forest

A 52-year-old mother of six, a resident of Tal Menashe in the Shomron, was found dead in the Reichan forest with signs of violence on her body overnight Sunday.

The woman had left her home on Sunday at 1 p.m. to go for a run in the nature reserve in the Reichan forest, next to Tel Menashe, and never returned. When her husband failed to reach her on her phone, he contacted the police and a search began.

The search continued for hours, with the participation of volunteers from the Samaria-Jordan Valley search and rescue squad in the Yehudah Shomron Police, the IDF, Border Police, a K9 unit, and civilian volunteers.

Her body was found in the forest at about Monday morning at 1 a.m. There were signs of severe violence to her body, especially her head. MDA paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

The woman was later identified as Esther Hurgan, an artist and marriage counselor. She left behind her husband Binyamin and six children, the youngest of whom is 13, and celebrated his Bar Mitzva only three months ago.

“A dear woman, so full of goodness and helpful to others, went out in the afternoon to exercise a minute from her home in the center of Israel and is murdered by barbarians in such a cruel way,” said the head of the Shomron Regional Council, Yossi Dagan, on Monday morning. “What kind of savages, like those in the Middle Ages, are we facing?”

A massive manhunt for the perpetrator(s) was launched by Israeli security forces.

Really ? Concern Among Muslims Over Halal Status Of COVID-19 Vaccine

G-d save us all from frummies.....

In October, Indonesian diplomats and Muslim clerics stepped off a plane in China. While the diplomats were there to finalize deals to ensure millions of doses reached Indonesian citizens, the clerics had a much different concern: Whether the COVID-19 vaccine was permissible for use under Islamic law.

As companies race to develop a COVID-19 vaccine and countries scramble to secure doses, questions about the use of pork products — banned by some religious groups — has raised concerns about the possibility of disrupted immunization campaigns.

Pork-derived gelatin has been widely used as a stabilizer to ensure vaccines remain safe and effective during storage and transport. Some companies have worked for years to develop pork-free vaccines: Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis has produced a pork-free meningitis vaccine, while Saudi- and Malaysia-based AJ Pharma is currently working on one of their own.

But demand, existing supply chains, cost and the shorter shelf life of vaccines not containing porcine gelatin means the ingredient is likely to continue to be used in a majority of vaccines for years, said Dr. Salman Waqar, general secretary of the British Islamic Medical Association.

Spokespeople for Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca have said that pork products are not part of their COVID-19 vaccines. But limited supply and preexisting deals worth millions of dollars with other companies means that some countries with large Muslim populations, such as Indonesia, will receive vaccines that have not yet been certified to be gelatin-free.

This presents a dilemma for religious communities, including Orthodox Jews and Muslims, where the consumption of pork products is deemed religiously unclean, and how the ban is applied to medicine, he said.

“There’s a difference of opinion amongst Islamic scholars as to whether you take something like pork gelatin and make it undergo a rigorous chemical transformation,” Waqar said. “Is that still considered to be religiously impure for you to take?”

The majority consensus from past debates over pork gelatin use in vaccines is that it is permissible under Islamic law, as “greater harm” would occur if the vaccines weren’t used, said Dr. Harunor Rashid, an associate professor at the University of Sydney.

There’s a similar assessment by a broad consensus of religious leaders in the Orthodox Jewish community as well.

“According to the Jewish law, the prohibition on eating pork or using pork is only forbidden when it’s a natural way of eating it,” said Rabbi David Stav, chairman of Tzohar, a rabbinical organization in Israel.

If “it’s injected into the body, not (eaten) through the mouth,” then there is “no prohibition and no problem, especially when we are concerned about sicknesses,” he said.

Yet there have been dissenting opinions on the issue — some with serious health consequences for Indonesia, which has the world’s largest Muslim population, some 225 million.

In 2018, the Indonesian Ulema Council, the Muslim clerical body that issues certifications that a product is halal, or permissible under Islamic law, decreed that the measles and rubella vaccines were “haram,” or unlawful, because of the gelatin. Religious and community leaders began to urge parents to not allow their children to be vaccinated.

“Measles cases subsequently spiked, giving Indonesia the third-highest rate of measles in the world,” said Rachel Howard, director of the health care market research group Research Partnership.

A decree was later issued by the Muslim clerical body saying it was permissible to receive the vaccine, but cultural taboos still led to continued low vaccination rates, Howard said.

“Our studies have found that some Muslims in Indonesia feel uncomfortable with accepting vaccinations containing these ingredients,” even when the Muslim authority issues guidelines saying they are permitted, she said.

Governments have taken steps to address the issue. In Malaysia, where the halal status of vaccines has been identified as the biggest issue among Muslim parents, stricter laws have been enacted so that parents must vaccinate their children or face fines and jail time. In Pakistan, where there has been waning vaccine confidence for religious and political reasons, parents have been jailed for refusing to vaccinate their children against polio.

But with rising vaccine hesitancy and misinformation spreading around the globe, including in religious communities, Rashid said community engagement is “absolutely necessary.”

“It could be disastrous,” if there is not strong community engagement from governments and health care workers, he said.

In Indonesia, the government has already said it will include the Muslim clerical body in the COVID-19 vaccine procurement and certification process.

“Public communication regarding the halal status, price, quality and distribution must be well-prepared,” Indonesian President Joko Widodo said in October.

While they were in China in the fall, the Indonesian clerics inspected China’s Sinovac Biotech facilities, and clinical trials involving some 1,620 volunteers are also underway in Indonesia for the company’s vaccine. The government has announced several COVID-19 vaccine procurement deals with the company totaling millions of doses.

Sinovac Biotech, as well as Chinese companies Sinopharm and CanSino Biologics — which all have COVID-19 vaccines in late-stage clinical trials and deals selling millions of doses around the world — did not respond to Associated Press requests for ingredient information.

In China, none of the COVID-19 vaccines has been granted final market approval, but more than 1 million health care workers and others who have been deemed at high risk of infection have received vaccines under emergency use permission. The companies have yet to disclose how effective the vaccines are or possible side effects.

Pakistan is late-stage clinical trials of the CanSino Biologics vaccine. Bangladesh previously had an agreement with Sinovac Biotech to conduct clinical trials in the country, but the trials have been delayed due to a funding dispute. Both countries have some of the largest Muslim populations in the world.

While health care workers on the ground in Indonesia are still largely engaged in efforts to contain the virus as numbers continue to surge, Waqar said government efforts to reassure Indonesians will be key to a successful immunization campaign as COVID-19 vaccines are approved for use.

But, he said, companies producing the vaccines must also be part of such community outreach.

“The more they are transparent, the more they are open and honest about their product, the more likely it is that there are communities that have confidence in the product and will be able to have informed discussions about what it is they want to do,” he said.

“Because, ultimately, it is the choice of individuals.”

Ben-Gurion Letter Outlining His Vision for Israel Discovered After 69 Years

Ben Gurion Speaking to the Kloizenberger Rebbe

A previously unknown letter written by Israel’s first prime minister David Ben-Gurion describing his vision for the nascent state was recently discovered, approximately 69 years after it was first sent.

The 1951 missive to a Swedish journalist was kept by the recipient’s granddaughter, who is the current Swedish ambassador to Finland Nicola Clase.

Clase shared the letter with Israeli Ambassador to Finland Hagit Ben-Yaakov at a meeting between the two.
In his letter, Ben-Gurion wrote in Hebrew: “In establishing the State of Israel, the dream of generations of Jews for a national revival has been realized.
"We are at the beginning of our journey, the state was established not only for the hundreds of thousands of Jews who lived in the country before - but for all the masses of scattered Israelis, who need and aspire to an independent homeland... Most of all, humanity needs at this time peace, cooperation and friendship between peoples. True friendship will thrive solely on the basis of mutual recognition."

"[Clase’s] grandfather was a journalist in his youth who worked for the Swedish magazine Världshorisont," says Ben-Yaakov.
"The magazine wrote a special issue on Israel and sent a draft of it to David Ben-Gurion, then the prime minister of the young State of Israel. Ben-Gurion wrote back to the magazine with a letter in which he presented in Hebrew his vision.”
According to Clase, her grandfather framed the letter and hung it in his home. After his death, she took the letter, which now accompanies her wherever she goes.

"I held the letter in my hand and began to translate Ben-Gurion’s words for her," says Ben-Yaakov. "When I finished reading we were both teary-eyed from excitement."

Examining the Zohar

The festival of Hanukkah (however you spell it in English), in addition to its historical origins, is also a celebration of the long mystical tradition in Judaism. Nothing symbolizes mysticism in Judaism today more than the book called the Zohar (Bright Light). It has become the most significant text, in terms of its influence on Jewish life, since the Talmud. Yet its origins are obscure. Some of its ideas are often absurd. And its authorship is still in dispute.

How did such a book come to be so important? Why do some people actually claim it has magical powers? That is not even said of the Torah!

The Zohar was neither discovered nor heard of until the 14th century in northern Spain. It purports to be the work of the great Talmudic figure Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai of the late first and second century. A scholar and mystic, he was a pupil of Rabbi Akiva and shared many of his views. He was persecuted by the Romans for criticizing them and refused to stop teaching the Torah when it was banned. He and his son spent 13 years hiding in a cave to escape persecution.

The Zohar was brought to light during a period of mystical explosion. Jews, Christians, and Muslims were all exploring alternatives to the formal, intellectual rationalism of theology, still rooted in Greek philosophy. The book is a compilation of different volumes, commentaries, and dissertations.

‘Shtisel’ Cast Discuss Season 3 and Returning to Set After Long Hiatus: ‘It’s Still the Feeling of Family’

(From top left) moderator Jessica Shaw in discussion with “Shtisel” cast members Michael Aloni, Dov Glickman, the show’s co-creator Ori Elon, and cast members Neta Riskin and Shira Haas.

The cast of the popular Israeli television series “Shtisel” participated in a virtual panel discussion on Thursday and opened up about revising their characters five and a half years after filming season 2 of the show, and what season 3 has in store for viewers.

“There’s a lot to expect from this season,” said actor Michael Aloni — who plays the show’s lead character, Akiva Shtisel — during the live virtual event hosted by The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center in New York City and moderated by Jessica Shaw.

The show’s first season was filmed eight years ago and originally aired in Israeli in 2013. Season 2 was filmed five and a half years ago.

The show’s co-creator, Ori Elon, admitted that he was not sure if a third season would even be filmed and Aloni added that after the second season aired, he thought the show was over. He recalled being surprised that fans wanted another season and even when he got the call about filming for season 3.

Israel kicks off mass coronavirus vaccine drive to stamp out COVID-19 pandemic

Rabbi Lau Taking the Vaccine

Israel’s vaccine drive officially began on Sunday morning, with healthcare workers, the president, and the Israel Defense Forces chief of staff set to receive the coronavirus shot throughout the day.

Among the first to receive the vaccine on Sunday morning were former coronavirus czar Ronni Gamzu, who has returned to his job at Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital, and Finance Minister Israel Katz.

President Reuven Rivlin will receive the vaccination Sunday morning at a Jerusalem hospital. IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi will receive the military’s first dose of the vaccine in order to set a “personal example” to the rest of the troops, the army said last week.

From Monday, Israelis aged 60-plus and at-risk populations can receive a vaccine at health maintenance organizations (HMOs) with an appointment.

The government hopes to inoculate some 60,000 people per day and as many as two million Israelis by the end of January. But Hebrew media reports said the first week would serve as a pilot program, tamping down expectations that hundreds of thousands of Israelis would be vaccinated within days.

The New York Times Finally Apologizes for ONE of its Many Lies & Fabrications

 by Michael Goodwin

The best stories in The New York Times often involve the Gray Lady’s self-flagellation over a doozy of a mistake, and Saturday was one of those days. The paper was crowded with confessions, explanations and apologies over a disgraced podcast called “Caliphate” that went off the rails and into the weeds of fiction.

Over 12 episodes in 2018, the program promoted the false boasts of a Pakistani man living in Canada who claimed he murdered and beheaded people as a member of Islamic State in Syria. The man, Shehroze Chaudhry, who went by the name Abu Huzayfah, also told tales about terrorist leaders using maps to plan attacks on Western targets and aiming for another 9/11. “They wanted to outdo Al Qaeda,” Chaudhry warned.

It was sensational stuff and the release sparked political fallout in Canada, with Justin Trudeau’s government accused of not monitoring the return of Islamic State fiends.

Soon, however, critics suggested the Times had been duped and that Chaudhry never joined ISIS or committed crimes. It turns out that the battlefield pictures he posted on social media as his own were taken off the Internet.
