Israeli Seminaries Abandoning Girls for Sukkot

  Letter to the editor!

Seminaries Must Stop Abandoning Girls for Sukkot

The travesty that girls’ seminaries committed 30 years ago when my own daughters went to seminary, which I hoped they would have corrected when my granddaughter entered seminary last month, seems to still be alive and well!

I am referring to the fact that seminaries start only a few weeks before the Yomim Noraim, before the girls even have time to make contacts, yet the girls are expected to place themselves for Sukkot on their own! They are literally thrown out of their dorms!

A girl told my granddaughter that she never felt homeless before and now she feels homeless, having to find a place to stay for Sukkos!

The dorm is closed for the whole Yom Tov, so there is not even the possibility for the girls to stay in and the seminary to provide meals.

If the seminary wants the girls to come before the Yomim Noraim, they should be responsible for them. Otherwise, seminary should start after the Yomim Tovim.

All this, for the mere cost of $30,000+.

This causes some parents to come for Yom Tov, adding to the cost of the seminary year. And the way Yom Kippur comes out this year, it necessitates people to come for two-and-a-half weeks, something that many working parents simply cannot do.

When will seminaries stop this travesty and when will parents unite and refuse to send their girls, only to have to fend for themselves, making the transition to seminary that much harder.

 Enough is enough!!!

This has always frustrated me. I'm paying for a 10 month experience including the holidays, all of them. If you work for a yeshiva or seminary, just assume you will have to spend it working with the kids instead of disappearing to be with your family. It's part of the comprehensive experience.

The girls are at risk when they get invited to families they do not know nor do their parents know if this is a “safe” family. Many families in Israel are struggling to feed their own families and feel uncomfortable saying “No”to guests. So your daughter may be eating the food meant for a grandparent or a child. How does this Succos- I need to find a roof over my head experience- prepare your daughter for life. What’s the probability of that happening often in the future? Many girls are accepting invitations based on the clothing worn by the family that invites them. There still are wolves dressed like Grandma.

Is there a seminary in your country that your granddaughter can go to? Why does she have to go to Israel?

Is this a problem with the Modern Orthodox programs too? Or is this just DIN being DIN, finding another item to gleefully bash the Charedi world? Rav Schach protested against the Israel seminary model for Americans. But many parents do whatever they want to keep up with the Joneses. So they are also like DIN that they don’t listen to Daas Torah

Dee upgerissinar shoiteh!
The word "chareidie" doesn't appear once in the entire letter!
And I didn't write the letter I just copied and pasted!
You are right that I don't listen to "daas torah"
Who listens to "daas torah?"
Does Ger listen to Bobov daas Torah? Does Bobov listen to Satmar daas torah? Does Ponovitz listen to Mir daas torah? Does Satmar listen to Mir daas torah? Does Kloizenberg list to Ger Daas Torah?
You Shoiteh Shebeoilim!
"Daas Torah" is a made up term by litvishe ama-ratzim! The Chassidishe velt never heard that term and they wouldn't know what the hell you are talking about!
A bee ge'ploidert!
