The AP was ridiculed on social media, including by Elon Musk, after publishing a disgraceful obituary about Hassan Nasrallah, depicting the murderous subhuman monster in an overly positive light.
The article initially had the headline “Charismatic and shrewd: A look at longtime Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.” This drew comparisons to The Washington Post’s description of al-Qaeda leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as an “austere religious scholar” in 2019.
After backlash, the AP changed its headline to “Who is longtime Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah?” but doesn't mention his decades of terrorism.
Elon Musk responded by sharing Visegrad 24’s post titled “Ladies and gentlemen, the mainstream press!”
Hillel Neuer, a human rights activist who consistently calls out the UN’s hypocrisy, posted, “I’m sorry for your loss, Charismatic and shrewd…. an astute strategist… considered a pragmatist… idolized by his Lebanese Shiite followers… respected by millions across the Arab and Islamic world…”
He added, “Maybe next time, speak to his victims.”
AG Hamilton on X compared the treatment of the terrorist by the AP to the late US Senator Jim Inhofe. “Former US Sen Inhofe, a defense hawk who called human-caused climate change a ‘hoax,’ dies at 89.”
Congressman Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY) asserted, “Nasrallah is not a ‘charismatic leader.’ He is a bloodthirsty, anti-Semitic terrorist.”
The Daily Wire observed that AP’s article went through 12 paragraphs before mentioning the word “terrorist.” It referred to Nasrallah using terms such as “astute strategist,” “archenemy of Israel,” and “a fiery orator viewed as an extremist.”
‘Stop Antisemitism posted about the Washington Post’s similar treatment of Nasrallah. It wrote:
“Are we expecting a Hallmark Father’s Day card selection for ‘terrorists and suicide bombers’ next? The @washingtonpost calling Hezbollah’s Nasrallah a ‘moral compass’ & ‘father figure’ is beyond repulsive. His hands were soaked with American and Israeli blood.”
The Post wrote: “Among his followers, Mr. Nasrallah was seen as a father figure, a moral compass and a political guide. He was lauded as the man who empowered Lebanon’s once downtrodden and impoverished Shiite community and protected it from Israeli incursions by turning Hezbollah into a formidable deterrent force.”
It added: “Wearing the black turban that signifies descent from the prophet Muhammad, he delivered advice on topics ranging from complicated regional events to personal hygiene during the covid pandemic, sometimes speaking for hours without notes, always in the folksy yet articulate manner that established him as a skilled orator.”
