Pope Francis calls for genocide investigation of Israel

Pope Francis has called for an investigation into alleged acts of genocide by IDF forces during the ongoing wars against the Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, according to an upcoming book.

On Sunday, the Italian daily La Stampa published excerpts from Hernán Reyes Alcaide’s new book, Hope Never Disappoints. Pilgrims Towards a Better World, which is set to be released on Tuesday.

Among the excerpts published Tuesday were quotes attributed to the Vatican pontiff in which he is said to have cited claims by “some experts” accusing Israel of genocide, and backing an investigation of IDF war conduct.

“According to some experts, what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide,” Pope Francis is quoted as saying.

The recent appointment of former Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration has sparked discussions regarding the future of U.S.-Turkey relations. Gabbard, known for her outspoken criticism of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has consistently highlighted concerns over Erdoğan’s policies and actions, particularly in relation to ISIS and the Kurdish population, as was reported on Friday on the medyanews.net web site.

In a 2020 video, Gabbard unequivocally stated, “Erdoğan is not our friend,” reflecting her skepticism towards Turkey’s role in regional conflicts. Her military background, having served in the U.S. Army during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, has informed her perspectives on counterterrorism and foreign policy. According to the medyanews.net report, Gabbard has accused Erdoğan of supporting ISIS, asserting that he is a “radical Islamist megalomaniac who wants to be the Caliph.”

Gabbard’s criticism extends to Turkey’s military actions in northern Syria. As per the information provided in the medyanews.net report, she condemned President Trump’s decision to permit Turkey’s 2019 invasion into the region, describing it as “laying out a red carpet, a green light for Erdoğan and Turkey to launch an ethnic cleansing and offensive against the Kurds.” She further accused Trump of deceiving the American public, emphasizing the necessity to protect Kurdish allies from what she termed Turkish genocide.

  The Israeli Air Force on Sunday killed Hezbollah propaganda chief Mohammad Afif in a targeted strike on a bunker in Beirut, according to Reuters.

The bunker was located in the Ras al-Naba’a neighborhood in central Beirut, not in Hezbollah’s stronghold of Dahiyeh to the south of the capital, Lebanese security sources told the news agency.

On Oct. 22, Afif was forced to interrupt a press conference in Dahiyeh after the IDF issued an evacuation order for the area ahead of conducting air strikes. The Hezbollah spokesman was rushed away on a bicycle, shortly after declaring that Israeli bombings didn’t scare him, according to an eyewitness report by “PBS NewsHour.”

Senate Will Sanction Hague Criminal Court if they Pursue arrest Warrants Against Israel Leaders

 If the International Criminal Court and its prosecutor Karim Khan don’t reverse their “outrageous unlawful actions to pursue arrest warrants against Israeli officials, the Senate should immediately pass sanctions legislation, as the House has already done on a bipartisan basis,” Senate Majority Leader-elect John Thune (R-S.D.) wrote on Sunday.

If the outgoing Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) “does not act, the Senate Republican majority will stand with our key ally Israel and make this—and other supportive legislation—a top priority in the next Congress,” Thune added.

In June, the House passed a bill calling on the U.S. president to sanction those who assist the ICC in its investigation, arrest, detention or prosecution of “a protected person” and sanctions and imposes visa bans on those people and their families.

Khan had previously said that he was seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as for Hamas leaders.

Several senators supported the incoming Senate majority leader’s statement.

“The Senate must immediately pass legislation to sanction the International Criminal Court,” wrote Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), chair of the Senate Republican Conference. “Senate Republicans stands with Israel.”

“Well done Senator Thune. The ICC’s actions against Israel have been outrageous, and an independent review into the prosecutor’s actions is more than called for,” wrote Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). “The Senate should take up the ICC sanctions bill that passed the House in a bipartisan manner. Standing up for Israel today protects America tomorrow.”

Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, wrote that the committee “can and should act as soon as possible to pass ICC sanctions legislation.”

“We waited for months for the majority to schedule the vote only to have them postpone it before the election,” Risch wrote. “We will not fail to act when Republicans are in the majority.”

Veteran pollster J. Ann Selzer announced she was done with election polling and moving on to "other ventures" after her pre-election poll in Iowa inaccurately showed Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of President-elect Donald Trump in the state he had easily won in 2016 and 2020.

"Over a year ago I advised the Register I would not renew when my 2024 contract expired with the latest election poll as I transition to other ventures and opportunities," Selzer explained in an op-ed Sunday in the Des Moines Register.

"Would I have liked to make this announcement after a final poll aligned with Election Day results? Of course. It’s ironic that it’s just the opposite. I am proud of the work I’ve done for the Register, for the Detroit Free Press, for the Indianapolis Star, for Bloomberg News and for other public and private organizations interested in elections. They were great clients and were happy with my work," she continued.

A Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll published November 2 found Harris leading Trump in Iowa 47% to 44%. This was a 7-point shift from Iowa polling in September, which found Trump had a 4-point advantage over Harris.

In the previous two elections, Trump handily won the state by a significant margin, defeating Hillary Clinton by 9.4 percentage points in 2016 and Joe Biden by 8.2 percentage points in 2020.

"It’s hard for anybody to say they saw this coming," Selzer told the Des Moines Register at the time of Harris' lead. "She has clearly leaped into a leading position." 

Selzer's polling set off a media firestorm in the final stretch of the 2024 election. Pundits on MSNBC, CNN and ABC's "The View" all celebrated the forecast, as a sign that there was a broader shift in the Midwestern states to Harris.

"If this is accurate, and if anybody is accurate, it’s likely to be Ann Selzer in the Iowa poll. If this is accurate, it implies that Harris might be winning Iowa," MSNBC host Rachel Maddow gushed. 

Trump won Iowa for the third time this election, defeating Harris by over 14 percentage points.

In an op-ed for the Des Moines Register days after the election, Selzer said her team was reviewing the data and confessed she had been bombarded with questions asking if she had "manipulated" the data to show Harris with a false lead. 

Commentators on social media seized on the polling after the election and mocked her over it.

"It was shockingly wrong," journalist and broadcaster Piers Morgan posted on X. Trump just crushed Kamala in Iowa. Ms Selzer’s poll was a turkey of Biblical proportions."

"Selzer is a disgrace," Washington Free Beacon reporter Joe Simonson posted on X.
