Cuomo kept COVID-19 tests from nursing homes But His Relatives got them

The Cuomo administration largely ignored a county official’s pleas for COVID-19 tests for nursing homes at the pandemic’s height last spring — even as the governor allegedly secured the then-scarce tests for his relatives, The Post has learned.

The slight is the latest stumble in Cuomo’s pandemic response, particularly with respect to nursing homes, where thousands of residents have died of confirmed or suspected cases of the coronavirus.

Troubled by reports of COVID-19 running roughshod through nursing homes early in the pandemic, Jack Wheeler, the manager of upstate Steuben County, requested in April 2020 that the state Department of Health provide enough tests for every resident and staff member of three facilities in his jurisdiction.

Rare coin rediscovered during conservation project of Jerusalem museum tower

A box of artifacts was rediscovered during a major conservation project to restore the stones of the “Phasael” tower of the Jerusalem citadel’s $40 million renewal project, the Tower of David Museum said Monday.

Additionally, the team discovered a box of artifacts, originally excavated in the 1980s. Within it, they uncovered a rare silver coin from the Second Temple period  — a “Tyre shekel.”

Two images are imprinted on either side of the coin: On one face is Melqart, the chief god of the Phoenician city of Tyre, and on the other, an eagle.

The coins were struck at some point between 125 BCE and the outbreak of the Great Revolt in 66 CE, when they were used to pay a half-shekel tax. Talmudic sources suggest that the Tyrian shekel was likely the only means of paying the head tax at the Temple for its upkeep.

Thousands at Kotel for traditional Pesach "Birchas Kohanim" ceremony

For the first time in a year and a half, thousands of people were able to attend the traditional priestly blessing event at the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem on Monday, made possible by the rolling back of coronavirus restrictions ahead of the Passover festival.

Traditionally, tens of thousands of Jewish pilgrims make their way twice a year to the Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City, on the intermediate days of the Passover and Sukkot festivals, with crowds of men and women spilling out from the Wall’s plaza to surrounding areas.

Thousands come to Yehoushua's Altar after PA desecration

Thousands of Jews visited Mount Ebal in Samaria today (Monday) and also visited the altar of Joshua son of Nun, part of which was destroyed last month by the Palestinian Authority. The site is believed to be the place where the Biblical Prophet Joshua built an altar after entering the Land of Israel more than 3,000 years ago.

Last month, a gravel crusher used by the Palestinian Authority for the paving of a new road deliberately removed and crushed stones from the ancient wall around the altar, provoking outrage among the Jewish and archaeological communities. The Samaria Regional Council promoted the restoration of the site and today for the first time held a huge event featuring thousands of people took place at the archaeological site.

"We invite the general public to come and enjoy the national parks, heritage sites, wineries and nature sites, enjoy a breathtaking view, Samaria is open to everyone and is a 25-minute drive from Tel Aviv," says Yossi Dagan, chairman of the Samaria Regional Council.

Referring to the thousands who came to the first festival on Mount Ebal and the altar of Joshua, Dagan says: "They are destroying and we are building, they are trying to erase history and we are restoring and preserving the world history and historical sites of the Jewish people, the thousands who come today prove that the Jewish people do not forget their roots. A nation that remembers its past will have a glorious future on all its land."

The festivals and celebrations at nature and heritage sites throughout Samaria are expected to continue tonight and tomorrow.

Rabbi Yoel Roth is under investigation for promoting child marriage

A Brooklyn rabbi is under investigation for allegedly arranging marriages between children as young as 15 years old.

The Forward reported Thursday that the New York Police Department and Administration of Child Services are looking into the accusations against Rabbi Yoel Roth, who runs Yeshiva Tiferes Hatorah in the Williamsburg neighborhood as well as a community in upstate Liberty, where many of the young couples he allegedly has married off now live.

Frimet Goldberger, a writer who grew up in the Hasidic community, posted about the practice earlier this month, sharing a picture of a newly engaged couple: The girl is 17 and the boy is 15.

“I am sharing this photo so you know what underage forced marriage looks like,” Goldberger wrote.

While men and women in Hasidic communities typically marry young, marriages are generally not done before the age of 18.

In New York state, one must be 18 years old to marry, though a 17-year-old can marry with a court’s permission.

According to the Forward, Rabbi Roth believes that boys should be married off at a young age.

Former followers of Rabbi Roth said he arranged marriages without permission from the parents of the bride and groom, and often does not allow parents to decide the date of the wedding or even to know the age of their child’s future spouse.

Rabbi Roth’s secretary, Shaul Indig, denied the claims to the Forward. “If you do something good, there’s always people who criticize you,” he said.

The NYPD and Administration of Child Services declined to provide specific information about the investigations to the Forward.

The world's largest matzah

20 feet of crunch: 13-pound, 20-foot long matzah baked in Bnei Brak breaks world record.

In honor of the Passover festival, the Matzot Aviv factory in Bnei Brak in central Israel baked the world's largest matzah.

Weighing in at 13.2 pounds (6 kilograms), the massive matzah was nearly 20 feet (six meters) long, 3.5 feet (1.06 meters) wide, and 0.16 inches (4 millimeters) thick.

The recipe for the record-breaking matzah included 15.4 pounds (seven kilograms) of flour and two liters of water. It had a total of 119,000 holes across its surface.

The Matzot Aviv bakery was founded in 1887 by the Wolf family in Neve Tzedek, and sells matzot, cookies, and other baked goods to over 30 countries around the world.
