Brooklyn Lady Shot Dead After Asking Neighbor Not To Set Off Fireworks

A Brooklyn woman who followed Borough President Eric Adams’ advice for New Yorkers to settle disputes neighbor-to-neighbor rather than calling 911 wound up shot dead after she confronted some punks setting off illegal fireworks, the victim’s grieving mom said.

Shatavia Walls, 33, was blasted eight times in an East New York public housing complex on July 7, simply for asking the fiends to take their dangerous display away from a group of playing kids — exactly how Adams had urged constituents to act in the face of the pyrotechnic plague.

“She watched the news. Yes, she heard it,” Helen Testagros, Walls’ heartbroken mother, told The Post on Sunday, referring to Adams’ advice. “It was probably in the back of her mind.”

Who "murdered" R' Shmuel Ashkenazi ?

Rav Shmuel Ashkenazi, z’l, a resident of Jerusalem known as the “ish sefarim” due to his decades-long habit of buying a new sefer every day from the time of his wedding passed away on Shabbos at the age of 98, Kikar Shabbos reported.

A relative of the niftar told Kikar H’Shabbos that during the first few months of the coronavirus pandemic, Rav Ashkenazi eagerly awaited the moment he would be able to daven in shul once again. When shuls were finally reopened, Rav Ashkenazi returned to shul, thinking he would be safe since anyone with the coronavirus wouldn’t attend.

“But a murderer awaited him there!” his relative said. “One of the mispallelim who was aware that he was carrying the coronavirus nevertheless came to shul and sat not far from the elderly R’ Shmuel, who was mapkid to sit at a separate table.”

Shortly later, R’ Ashkenazi began developing symptoms of the virus, passing away on Shabbos, a few weeks later. “And to be clear,” his relative continued, “Rav Shmuel had no underlying illnesses despite his advanced age. He died only because of the coronavirus which he caught from the mispallel who violated the regulations.”

R’ Ashkenazi was born in Yerushalayim to a family that lived in the city for generations.

Due to his unusual minhag of buying a sefer every day, his home in Batei Ungarim looked like an otzeir sefarim, with sefarim lining all the walls of his apartment until the ceiling. He even had ladders to reach the upper shelves but had difficulty climbing them in his later years.

What made his home even more unusual was that sefarim even lined the walls of his small Israeli kitchen. Instead of upper kitchen cabinets in the small space allocated to it, there are sefarim shelves. Sefarim shelves also cover the other upper walls of the kitchen.

R’ Ashkenazi didn’t just buy the sefarim but also learned from them – from all of them.

He published a sefer of his Torah writings several years ago, Alfa Beisa Kadmisa.

Shalva Zalfreund 64 Dies of Covid After Begging Parents of Toddlers to Respect Regulations

A kindergarten worker from the central city of Petah Tikva died of COVID-19 on Friday, two weeks after she sent a message to parents asking them to respect the regulations to stop the spread of the coronavirus, and not send sick children to the daycare.

“I am in an at-risk group [for infection]. The authorities know with certainty about families who violated isolation or did not follow the instructions to not send children [to kindergarten when they] have a family member in isolation in their home,” wrote Shalva Zalfreund, 64.

“It is true that isolation for a small child is an unpleasant experience, but it passes in two weeks and in that one moment we can be partners to really save lives and educate our children to respect others,” Zalfreund told the parents.

“For me, it no longer matters who I contracted it from and who violated isolation. I just beg and plead for the grandparents, neighbors and older relatives who surround us and do not deserve to die, even if they have underlying illnesses,” she wrote.

Zalfreund said she had been told by “qualified sources” that she had been infected at the municipal kindergarten, but it was unclear how this could be confirmed.

Petah Tikva Mayor Rami Greenfeld eulogized Zalfreund as “an amazing teacher who educated many children in the city.”

Blacks Deface DeBlassios's "BLM Mural" in Front of Trump Towers

The Black Lives Matter mural in front of Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue was vandalized Saturday for the third time this week — this time by a black woman yelling, “refund the police!”

In the 3 p.m. episode, black paint was tossed on the yellow BLM mural as two officers tried to stop the woman, who wore a “Jesus Matters” T-shirt, from smearing the paint over the pavement.

“They’re liars!” the woman shouted as she kept pulling her arms away from the two cops. “They say they care about black lives, they’re saying to defund the police.”

As bystanders screamed profanities at the woman and she shouted “Refund the police!” in response, one of the officers slipped and fell in the wet paint, hurting his head and arm.The woman continued undeterred, yelling and getting on her hands and knees to keep smearing the paint.

“They don’t care! They don’t care about black people!” she yelled. “We’re killing each other left and right! Black Lives Matters — liars!”

Two women, ages 29 and 39, were taken into custody and are expected to be charged with criminal mischief, police said.

The injured officer was taken to Bellevue Hospital, police said.

The mural was also targeted for vandalism Friday afternoon.

Volunteers from ZAKA Tel Aviv and ZAKA Israel came to inform a 37-year-old woman during Shabbat that she had tested positive for coronavirus.

When she opened the door, the volunteers were surprised to see that not only did she not go into isolation but that she was holding a Shabbat meal with her husband and five children and had even invited seven guests to the meal.

ZAKA said that unlike in previous weeks, there was increased activity this Shabbat in locating patients in Ramat Gan. 

The work was spread in a large number of central cities, including Bnei Brak, Givat Shmuel, Or Yehuda, Petah Tikva, Kiryat Ono, Ramat Gan and Tel Aviv.

Meanwhile, Police said on Saturday that 2,960 reports were distributed in the last day as part of the enforcement of the restrictions imposed on the public in the fight against the coronavirus.

According to the statement, 2,780 reports were distributed for not wearing a mask, 77 for leaving a place of residence in a restricted area and 34 reports for operating a place of business or providing a service to someone who is not wearing a mask.
