West Bank settlements not illegal, US decides in historic US policy shift

In a historic reversal of US policy, the Trump administration announced on Monday that it does not view Israeli settlements in the West Bank as illegal. The policy change was set to be formalized in an official address by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington.

The decision, The Jerusalem Post has learned, came after a year-long review conducted by the State Department’s legal office. The team met with international law experts as well as officials from different governments to hear their opinions.

The review was prompted by the Obama administration’s decision to enable the passing of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 in December 2016, according to which settlement activity constitutes a "flagrant violation" of international law and has "no legal validity".

In 1978, the Carter administration concluded that the establishment of civilian settlements was inconsistent with international law but Reagan overturned that stance in 1981. Until Obama, administrations recognized that settlement activity could be an obstacle to peace but mostly didn’t get caught up on legal positions.

It was not immediately clear how the new policy would impact the future roll out of the Trump peace plan.

This month, 26 Muslim candidates across the U.S. — including some in metro Detroit in cities like Hamtramck and Dearborn Heights — won local election races, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations. 

A total of 34 Muslim candidates won in 2019. Three Muslims were elected Nov. 5 to Hamtramck City Council, ensuring the six-member council will remain Muslim-majority, which became so four years ago.

Out of the 166 Muslim candidates examined in the study, 29 of them were in Michigan, and out of those, 10 ran for statewide and federal offices, which was the focus of the study. 

The study was done by professors and researchers at Washington State University, Columbia University, Western Washington University, and Pennsylvania State University, who described it as “a multiplatform study of trolls: social media, fringe media, and the real world.”

Beit Shemesh has the largest number of children per family

At the end of 2018, a total of 2.960 million children (0-17) lived in Israel.

These children made up 33% of the country's total population, Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics said Monday morning.

A full 2.131 million of the children (72%) are Jews, while 731,000 were Arabs (24.7%) and another 98,000 (3.3%) were "other" - a label used to include non-Arab Christians and other groups not identified by religion.

Of large cities with over 100,000 residents, Jerusalem had the greatest percentage of children, at 39%. In Haifa, Ramat Gan, Tel Aviv, and Bat Yam, children represented approximately one-fifth of the city's population.

Israel had an average of 2.43 children per household in 2018, and Beit Shemesh had the highest number of children per household, at 3.67.

One of the heads of the Neturei Karta, Yisroel Meir Hirsch, published a video last week during the rocket attacks on Israel that raised the ire of hundreds of thousands of Israelis. 

While the Palestinians were launching rockets at Israel and millions of people were huddled in bomb shelters, Hirsch said that the entire land of Israel belongs solely to the Palestinians and that he wishes the speedy “nullification of the Zionist-terrorist-regime. The lands, which are all Palestinian, should be returned to the nation of Palestine.” Towards the end of the video, he said: “The world should serve Allah under one name.”

The video which Hirsch said in Hebrew, was broadcast by Palestinian media channels and had English subtitles on it for those who don’t understand Hebrew.

Hirsch opened by saying: “To our brothers and friends, the Palestinian people, who are under the continuing occupation, under the boots of the Zionist occupation, and to all those who search for peace among the nations throughout the world. We, the authentic Palestinian Jews who represent the Jewish nation in Palestine and throughout the entire world, wish to express our unequivocal opposition to the Zionist State and to the brutal crimes of the occupation.”

“We hereby declare that there is no such solution as the Two-State Solution. The entire land of Palestine belongs to the Palestinian people only. They are the legitimate owners of all of Palestine, and the Zionists have no right to any piece of the land, not even a centimeter.

“We also wish to clarify here that the position of J-Street and such like-minded organizations do not represent the Jewish people and are certainly not benefiting the Palestinian people. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., emerged this week as a central figure on the Republican side of the House Intelligence Committee in the public impeachment hearings -- and a top antagonist of Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif. 

 The 35-year-old lawmaker featured prominently as tensions boiled over between lawmakers on Friday during the questioning of former Ukraine Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch. Ranking Member Devin Nunes, R-Calif., attempted to give up the remainder of his time to her. But as Stefanik spoke, Schiff slammed down the gavel, arguing that it was not allowed under committee rules: "The gentlewoman will suspend."

"What is the interruption for now?" she shot back.

What followed was a debate between Nunes and Schiff as to whether the Republican could offer his time to a fellow member of Congress, rather than minority counsel. Stefanik repeatedly tried to speak, only for Schiff to bang his gavel again.

"You're gagging the young lady from New York?" Nunes laughed at one point.

At Lyon Airport France ..... Baggage Handlers Refuse to Release Suitcases Belonging to Jews!

Here is the testimony from a traveler on that flight:

We landed in Lyon Saint-Exupéry on Sunday, November 10, 2019, on a Transavia flight from Tel Aviv. The plane landed as planned at 5:20 p.m. At the passport control desk in Terminal 1, usually crowded, there was no one but the passengers from our flight. Ten minutes later, around 5:30 p.m., everyone was in front of the luggage conveyor 02, as shown on the screens, waiting for their suitcases.

At around 5:50 p.m., some of the passengers began to show their surprised for the time it took to unload our luggage, especially since at this stage of the events, we are still the only flight waiting for luggage, the other luggage conveyors being empty.
