In a sharply worded commentary posted Monday, at Arutz 7, veteran international journalist Robert Besser urges Israeli leaders to confront what he describes as an approaching geopolitical shock: the end of President Donald Trump’s term in 38 months and the potential collapse of reliable American backing.
Besser argues that Israel’s current sense of security is tied almost entirely to the personality-driven support of Trump, not to long-term U.S. policy. He warns that once Trump leaves the White House in January 2029, “there is no guarantee the next administration—especially one led by the American left—will stand with Israel.”
He writes that Israeli statecraft cannot rely on the temporary friendship of a single leader, especially one he describes as motivated by “ego-driven ambitions for recognition as a peacemaker.” Historical precedents, he notes, show how well-intentioned peace efforts can lead to disastrous outcomes.
Besser says Israel must urgently reduce its military dependence on Washington and expand strategic alliances across Asia—particularly with India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Singapore—nations he believes share Israel’s cultural values of work, family, education, and national pride.
He paints a bleak picture of America’s future, describing the country as weakened by ideological extremism, declining leadership, and institutional decay. He warns that left-leaning governments may one day curtail or sever military cooperation with Israel, as he says President Biden previewed by pausing arms shipments during the Gaza war.
Besser adds that if U.S. aid to Arab states collapses, peace agreements with countries like Egypt and Jordan could crumble, reopening the door to regional conflict.
“Wake up,” Besser cautions, insisting that Jewish history teaches the danger of depending on fading empires. The time for Israel to prepare for a world without automatic Western support, he says, is now, not in crisis.
