To my fellow New York Jews, I beg: Wear the damn mask!

Few face masks are to be seen Sept. 28 outside Congregation Yetev Lev D'Satmar synagogue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, despite a local increase in cases of COVID-19 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

by Amy Klein

Driving to a friend’s house in Prospect Park the other day, I witnessed an amazing sight: The minute I crossed over the Williamsburg Bridge, the streets were filled with people not wearing masks. Mothers with gaggles of kids, young couples strolling, men rushing furiously to their next appointments.

And then boom: The minute I exited South Williamsburg into Bushwick, the masks reappeared on people’s faces.

I know it’s not politically correct, but as a traditional Jew, I’m going to tell you who was wearing masks and who wasn’t. In Bushwick, people of all colors were wearing masks. In South Williamsburg, most of the ultra-Orthodox Jews were not.

By the time I crossed over into Clinton Hill and Prospect Park, I was back among the masked Brooklyn gentrifiers.

After I parked my car, I noticed a young Hasid standing on the corner, holding a lulav and etrog, the ritual objects for Sukkot, the current holiday. He was trying to stop passersby with the question, “Are you Jewish?” so he could help bless the citron and the palm fronds. But it was more of a gesture than an audible ask, since this bearded young man in a long black coat was wearing a mask.

One passerby stopped, not to make a blessing, but to shout: “You should get your people to wear a mask!”

“That’s racist,” my sister said when I recounted the story.

“Is it racist to call out the ultra-Orthodox Jews if they’re the ones in this city not wearing masks?” I asked her. “How is it anti-Semitic if they’re the ones giving Jews a bad name?”

Up until recently, politicians have been too afraid to single out our community.

Mayor de Blasio refused to shut down synagogues before Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, where we gather to pray for atonement — sometimes in mask-free, cramped synagogues and basements. Later, he proposed a lockdown on certain ZIP codes where COVID has surged.

Like many people in New York City who suffered lockdown this spring so we would flatten the coronavirus curve, I don’t want the city to go into a complete lockdown. And as a fellow Jew (formerly Orthodox, never ultra) I feel personally responsible. Like our sages say, “Every Jew is responsible for one another.” That’s why I want to drive through Brooklyn, shouting out my car window in Yiddish, “Gey trog a farsholtene maske!” Wear. A. Damn. Mask.

Like many working moms, I have a lot at stake: I am privileged that our daughter is being taught in person at a private Jewish day school. Not ultra-Orthodox, but a socially distant, HVAC-ventilated, outdoor-lunching, overly cautious school that requires coronavirus testing to return after the holidays end on Sunday night. (As opposed to some ultra-Orthodox schools that passed out flyers advising not to test for COVID-19 so their schools wouldn’t be shut.)

If, like other schools in hot spots, our daughter’s school is shut down primarily because of the behavior of other Jews, I will want to take her to them, hold her up and shake her like a lulav and say, “Who will watch her now? Oy, what has happened to us?!”

On Tuesday, Gov. Cuomo took the necessary action of going one step further, restricting capacities at houses of worship — including synagogues — to 10 people or 25 percent, starting on Friday. As a result, Orthodox Jews in Borough Park set fire to garbage as they demonstrated against his edict on two nights this week.

But Cuomo, you should not be deterred. As a Jew who has much appreciation for my more religious brothers and sisters (and who has no clue why they or anyone else flouts the medical recommendations), I urge you to stay strong and enforce the synagogue restrictions.

This weekend brings the holiday of Simchat Torah, one of the most joyous in our religion. Jews of all denominations celebrate en masse by dancing with the Torah, crowding the synagogues and streets like a Jewish mosh pit.

The prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, knows this, and he shut down the entire country before the High Holidays, so there would be no crowds on Yom Kippur through Sukkot and Simchat Torah.

Cuomo should also make sure these celebrations are prohibited this year. Dancing with the Torah and other mass gatherings like it should not be allowed to happen — until we have something to rejoice about.

Jewish "Al Sharpton" Heshy Tischler Will Finally Be Arrested on Monday

Heshy Tischler announced on social media that he has been informed that he will be arrested on Monday morning after Simchas Torah.

“I just got a call from the precinct,” Tischler rambles in the video below.

“They will be arresting me Monday morning. I’ll be taken in for inciting riot. Jacob Kornbluh, who harassed me the night before, that they don’t want to file charges for as of yet, he harassed me. They are telling everyone that I incited a riot, and Mr Kornbluh, the D.A., is going to be arresting me, on Monday morning to the 66 Precinct….”

“Mr Kornbluh is a very terrible bad man”, Tischler continued.

Tischler also apologized to Mrs DebLasio for calling her a “very bad name”.

Earlier today NYC Mayor DeBlasio said that he expected the NYPD to make an arrest in the assault of a Hasidic journalist Jacob Kornbluh.

Kornbluh, who writes for The Jewish Insider, claims he was punched and kicked by an angry crowd who screamed at him, calling him “Nazi” and “Hitler.”

Video footage from two nights ago shows Tischler cornering Kornbluh, calling him a “Rat” and a “Moiser” and encouraging the crowd to do the same – exclaiming, “Everyone say moiser!”

People can be heard yelling “min darf eim hargenen” (We need to kill him).

Tischler has frequently disgraced the names of the 6 million Kedoshim who were murdered in cold blood, by calling NY Governor Cuomo and NYC mayor DeBlasio “Nazis” and “Pigs”.

To respectfully disagree or protest against an elected official is perfectly permitted as this is the United States of America. But Tischler clearly has no clue what took place in the hell of Treblinka, Auschwitz and other Nazi killing factories.

Ulster County "Herbalist" Arrested For Choking A Woman Because of How She "Incorrectly Stored Her Lettuce"

Ok guys ... now that the holy Yom Tov is over, we are getting down to post serious news ...
I'm so glad that my wife doesn't care how I store the veggies ...and she doesn't mind that I "ask her questions." I certainly wouldn't invite Ms Weed to my Seder...

A 74-year-old Ulster County herbalist who taught women to identify plants and initiated them as "Green Goddesses" and was arrested for choking a woman for incorrectly storing lettuce in 2018 allegedly threatened her apprentice with death for asking too many questions, said police.

According to the Saugerties Police Department, Susun S. Weed of Saugerties repeatedly threatened her victim, who was a student in her two-week herbal medicine course, called a "Green Goddess Workshop," on several occasions between Saturday, Sept. 12 and Thursday, Sept. 17.

She used several threatening phrases, according to police, including "I'm going to kill you" and "If you ask more questions I'm going to (expletive deleted) flatten you," which led the victim to fear for her safety.

She was charged with the misdemeanor of second-degree harassment.

The course, which costs 75 dollars per night, includes lessons in making medicinal remedies, talking stick ceremonies, a visit to a moon lodge and guidance in "connecting with your green ally."

On July 2, 2018, Weed turned herself in to police after her alleged victim reported that Weed had told her she was "choking the lettuce" when she didn't leave enough air in the bag before resealing it, then choked her.

At that time, she was charged with the misdemeanor of criminal obstruction of breathing and blood circulation.

Weed was released after the most recent incident on an appearance ticket for the town of Saugerties court later in October.

A Reader Responds to DIN on Covid......

DIN. Please correct me if I'm wrong. It seems to me that you are still stuck in the covid information we had at the beginning stages. It was a time of confusion, people were dying, We didn't know of any remedy to treat the virus. I will agree that at that time people in our community were disrespecting this great health concern, and unfortunately we paid the price.....

At this time we are pretty much advanced in understanding the virus, as well as treatment for the virus.

There are many many points to point out about our current knowledge, and if you go through all the points, your assumption of the situation may be different.
I will just point out some of them.

Florida high school principal who was fired for refusing to say the Holocaust was a 'factual, historical event' is REHIRED and handed $150k in backpay

A Florida high school principal fired last year after he refused to say the Holocaust was a ‘factual, historical event’ has been rehired and issued $152,000 in back pay.

The decision to rehire and compensate former Spanish River Community High School Principal William Latson came following a 4-3 vote by the Palm Beach County School Board on Wednesday.

Latson was fired in October last year when emails he sent to a student’s mother surfaced, in which he said that the mass slaughter of six million Jews is a ‘belief’ that children at the school won’t be ‘forced’ to learn.

But in August, an administrative law judge ruled that the school district failed to prove he ‘engaged in misconduct in office, incompetence, or gross insubordination by a preponderance of the evidence’ and recommended his termination be overturned.

That ruling was accepted by the board Wednesday, though they voiced their reluctance to do so.

Latson will not return to Spanish River or work on any other school campus. Instead will be placed in the district's assessment department as a ‘principal on assignment.’

The decision followed expressions of anger from board members and 90 minutes of recorded voicemails from Holocaust survivors, family members and others who urged the district not to reinstate him.

Latson, who had worked for the Palm Beach public school district for more than 20 years, found himself at the center of a firestorm last year when emails he’d sent to a parent of a student at Spanish River in April 2018 resurfaced.

In the exchange, Latson wrote that students were allowed to opt out of Holocaust lessons because ‘not everyone believes the Holocaust happened’ and that as an educator he had ‘the role to be politically neutral’.

When the parent responded to insist the Holocaust was a historical fact, he insisted, ‘I can't say the Holocaust is a factual, historical event because I am not in a position to do so as a school district employee.’

He continued: ‘Not everyone believes the Holocaust happened and you have your thoughts but we are a public school and not all of our parents have the same beliefs so they will react differently.

'My thoughts and beliefs have nothing to do with this because I am a public servant.  I have the role to be politically neutral but support all groups in the school.

‘I work to expose students to certain things, but not all parents want their students exposed so they will not be and I can’t force that issue.

'I do allow information about the Holocaust to be presented and allow students and parents to make decisions about it accordingly. I do the same with information about slavery, I don’t take a position but allow for the information to be presented.'

Ugly Peter Beinart Teams Up With The New York Times In Campaign to Eliminate Israel

The recent news that the Ugly Peter Beinart has been hired as a contributing opinion writer to The New York Times was not shocking, but it is an ominous warning sign. This is because Ugly Beinart was quite obviously given the job because of an opinion piece he authored several months ago in which he explicitly called for the end of the State of Israel.

Although bathed in the pathos-laden language of modern progressivism, the article made perfectly clear what Ugly Beinart, out of naiveté or malice, was advocating. “It’s time to abandon the traditional two-state solution and embrace the goal of equal rights for Jews and Palestinians,” he wrote. “It’s time to imagine a Jewish home that is not a Jewish state.”

The article created something of a stir, for good reason. As an Israeli writer described it to me in Hebrew, here was the most dominant newspaper in America, with massive influence over the public discourse, calling to l’chasel medina — to eliminate a nation. This kind of open racism in such a powerful media outlet was all but unprecedented.

But it was also more than that.

No community is an island: The ultra-Orthodox Corona crisis

by Menachem Bombach

In recent weeks, Israel has been overwhelmed by skyrocketing COVID-19 infection rates. According to Ronni Gamzu, Israel’s coronavirus czar, more than 40 percent of all new Coronavirus cases are found in members of the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) community.

According to the government statistics bureau, however, the Haredi community makes up only some 12% of the overall Israeli population (a number that is expected to increase dramatically, until the Haredi community constitutes approximately 25% of the population in 2048). This shows us that during corona times, even a small group of people can have an enormous impact on the nation’s future.

What accounts for the dramatic rates of infection in the Haredi community? How have we gotten into a situation that not only threatens human life but touches on raw nerves politically and socially, and is causing a huge rift between the different sectors in Israeli society?

Blogger Suggests That the Jewish People Separate From Chassidim that are Deliberately Spreading the Virus!

What should Israel’s response be to its Haredi communities’ wanton disregard of the coronavirus quarantine guidelines?

I know that by merely raising the question, I risk being accused of a form of anti-Semitism, unfairly singling out the liberal Jews’ favorite target. Critics may argue that the Haredim are not a monolithic group. Every community has its outliers. What about the anti-Netanyahu demonstrators, and so on?

All of the above counterarguments are true. The Sephardi-Haredi leadership unequivocally supports stringent quarantine as a religious obligation. Many within the Ashkenazi-Haredi community do the same. Many in Israel, including our ministers and leaders, are small-time quarantine busters. We all are.

It is also true that the anti-Netanyahu demonstrators are breaking social distancing regulations. I, for one, do not believe that Israel’s democracy will be threatened if demonstrations are limited to 20 people in thousands of sites around Israel, until which time the number of newly infected drops below 2,000 per day.

The simple fact remains, however, that 40 percent of new infections every day come from within the Haredi community, and there is no evidence of increased infection among the political Left. By contrast, the percentage of Haredim who are tested and come out positive is close to 25%, three times higher than every other sector in Israeli society, including Arab Israelis, who in August also led the anti-quarantine charge. Today the Haredi community leads both in numbers of critically ill and deaths, far in excess of its proportional size. These statistics require an accounting and a coherent public response.

Golders Green has highest Covid-19 infection rate in Barnet

Golders Green ward had the highest Covid-19 infection rate in Barnet, according to latest statistics from the council.

At 71.74 cases per 100,000 people, Golders Green ward’s case rate was two and a half times higher than the borough average of 28.6 cases per 100,000, for the week ending September 26.

Golders Green had the largest Jewish population of any ward in the country in the 2011 Census, but there is nothing to link the high number of cases to the Jewish community specifically.

Golders Green has recorded the highest number of confirmed cases in Barnet with 899, followed by Childs Hill with 698 and Garden Suburb with 679.

The PA's Most Dangerous Enemy is Archaeology

by Stephen M. Flatow

Pundits will tell you that the most dangerous enemies of the Palestinian Arab cause are the Gulf kingdoms that have decided to recognize Israel, or the European countries that are moving their embassies to Jerusalem, or the American politicians who refuse to keep underwriting the Palestinian Authority's debts.

I disagree. I say that the Palestinians' most formidable foe is … archaeology.

A 2,000-years-old mikvah (ritual bath) was recently uncovered in the Lower Galilee. Most people probably would never have heard about the discovery if not for the dramatic photos of the entire structure being carried by truck to a nearby kibbutz for preservation.

The remarkable sight of a truck-borne mikvah, however, also makes one pause and reflect on the remarkable implications of the archeological find.

Trump promises all Americans free access to same experimental COVID drugs he got

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday credited an experimental drug treatment with helping his recovery from COVID-19 and suggested his diagnosis could be a “blessing in disguise” for the nation’s battle against the pandemic .

In a new White House video posted Wednesday evening, Trump said his illness had shed light on an experimental antibody cocktail that he credited for his improved condition. Seemingly sensitive to the fact that his treatment course is far from that received by average Americans, he promised to swiftly get the drugs approved for use — and for free — even though he does not have the power to order that himself.

“I want everybody to be given the same treatment as your president, because I feel great,” Trump said from the Rose Garden. “I feel like perfect.”

Trump received an experimental antiviral cocktail made by Regeneron through a “compassionate use” exemption, a recognition of the above-and-beyond standard of care he receives as president. The safety and effectiveness of the drug have not yet been proven. Most people recover from COVID-19.
