Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) on Tuesday accused Israel of racism due to its failure to offer to distribute coronavirus vaccines to Palestinian Arabs.

“I think it’s really important to understand Israel is a racist state and that they would deny Palestinians, like my grandmother, access to a vaccine, that they don’t believe that she’s an equal human being that deserves to live, deserves to be able to be protected by this global pandemic,” the congresswoman, who is of Palestinian Arab descent, told Democracy Now.

“And it’s really hard to watch as this apartheid state continues to deny their own neighbors, the people that breathe the same air they breathe, that live in the same communities,” she charged.

“I hope my colleagues, I hope our country, sees what the Palestinians have been trying to tell us for a very long time. … You can see it with the distribution of the vaccine,” continued Tlaib.

Tlaib also maintained that Israel “has no intention” of helping Palestinian Arabs recover from the coronavirus pandemic because the US is “enabling” them to do so.

When the Yiddish newspaper Der Blatt set out to explain how a massive wedding for the grandson of the Satmar grand rabbi took place despite pandemic limits on gatherings, it waited until after the event to reveal all the details.

Another Orthodox news site took a different approach this week: JDN, an Israeli site, published an article before a large wedding about the secrecy involved in its planning, then replaced the article with another version that said the affair would be small and in keeping with COVID rules.

Photos and video from the wedding held Monday in Brooklyn’s Borough Park neighborhood made clear that the first version of the story was accurate.

They show that hundreds, if not thousands, of guests packed into the main synagogue of one faction of Bobov Hasidism on Monday night to celebrate the wedding of the youngest son of Rabbi Ben Zion Halberstam, the grand rabbi of the sect. Videos circulated the next day over WhatsApp showed a packed wedding hall with thousands of people and no masks in sight. Large tapestries with the words “mazel tov” were hung from a wall to cover windows into the hall.

The wedding is the latest example of the lack of compliance in Hasidic communities with protocols meant to stop the spread of the coronavirus. And perhaps more troubling for authorities hoping to stop these events, it is yet another example of the degree to which members of the Hasidic community are willing to keep secret violations of public health guidance that put lives in jeopardy as COVID cases rise across the country and a new more contagious variant of the disease continues to spread in the United States and around the world.

JDN, the Israeli news site that revealed the wedding plans on Monday, made clear the extent to which wedding organizers made sure to keep the event under wraps — even though, according to the news site, thousands attended and hundreds came from Europe and Israel to do so.

“Conditions make it very difficult to hold mass events, but the Bobov Hasidic group, one of the largest Hasidic groups in the United States, did everything to make the wedding take place on the better side, properly for the wedding of the youngest son of the grand rabbi for whom many anticipate a bright future,” according to the article published Monday.

Charedi communities are suffering from the virus more than anyone suspects

 In a briefing given Haredi journalists two days ago, the Haredi coronavirus crisis manager Roni Noma, claimed that 11% of the coronavirus patients hospitalized are from the Haredi sector.

He quickly qualified his remarks and said that it is impossible to know the exact figure because "many of them choose to quarantine at home". The charity 'Chesdei Amram' has revealed numbers that confirm this assertion and show the situation in the Haredi sector to border on catastrophic.

According to data obtained by Behadrei Haredim, from the beginning of January until the 19th, the organization received 9,641 inquiries regarding home quarantine, of which 5,931 people were accorded counseling and guidance. 3,767 individuals were hospitalized in the same period, including 927 in critical condition.

Of the patients in critical condition, 426 have recovered. 3,441 of all patients have recovered. Of the total number of those at home, 1,556 people needed a doctor's visit.

The organization emphasized that the situation is far more serious than the hospital data might indicate.

Over the course of 19 days, 4 people died in home care, but the organization has no information about the fate of the 34 patients who were moved from their houses to hospitals. About two months ago, between the second and third wave of infections, Channel 12journalist Yair Shreki posted on his Twitter account that his sources in Chesdei Amram reported an increase in demand for medical oxygen, as well as some patients being removed to hospitals.

A spokesman for the organization, former Haredi community leader Yoelish Kreuss, emphasized in a conversation with Behadrei Haredim that Shreki's report was only partially true. "Two weeks ago, we lent 70 oxygen kits to patients who preferred home care, and have placed 111 kits in hospitals. This much is in Shreki’s report. "Kreuss explained, adding," If you look at the data on the critical patients in hospitals, you will find that the rate of new cases is dropping.”

Kreuss added that these are not Haredi patients, according to Kreuss, and that there are now almost no oxygen kits in Mea Shearim or anywhere in the near area. "Our oxygen kits are now in use as far away as Dimona and Be’er Sheva,” Kreuss notes with satisfaction. Wherever they are, we see a considerable preference for home care, where the patient can be assured of individual attention and compassion.”

Just when Washington has a chance to turn the page, fresh signs emerged Tuesday that the past is not yet past. It is almost certain now that the Senate will hold an impeachment trial of President Trump next week.

Even worse, it looks probable he will be convicted of a single charge stemming from the Capitol invasion. 

The history-making event got the green light from McConnell on his last day as Senate majority leader. 

Speaking on the Senate floor Tuesday, McConnell said of the Jan. 6 incident: “The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people and they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like.”

The comments build on earlier reports that McConnell was glad House Democrats were impeaching the president and that he might vote for conviction. The speech signals he is likely a yes vote, which would open the GOP floodgates and yield at least the 67 Senate votes needed for conviction.

He spoke as reports circulated that Speaker Nancy Pelosi would transmit the House charge to the Senate later this week, with a trial to follow.

Eli Weinstein of Lakewood, Sholom Weiss of Boro Park Pardoned

President Trump on Tuesday granted clemency to 143 people, including well-connected celebrities and nonviolent drug offenders – but did not preemptively pardon himself or his family.

Two of those pardoned of most interest to the Jewish community are Eli Weinstein of Lakewood, and Sholom Weiss formerly of Boro Park. Weiss was the recipient of what is believed to be the longest-ever white-collar prison sentence – more than 800 years in prison in 2000. Trump did not pardon Former NY State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.

In a statement, the Trump Administration said:

Eliyahu Weinstein – President Trump commuted the sentence of Eliyahu Weinstein. This commutation is supported by former U.S. Attorney Brett Tolman, former Representative Bob Barr, former U.S. Attorney Joseph Whittle, Professor Alan Dershowitz, Representative Mark Walker, Representative Scott Perry, Representative Jeff Van Drew, Jessica Jackson of the Reform Alliance, The Tzedek Association, Dr. Danny Feuer, and numerous victims who have written in support.  Mr. Weinstein is the father of seven children and a loving husband. He is currently serving his eighth year of a 24-year sentence for a real estate investment fraud and has maintained an exemplary prison history. Upon his release, he will have strong support from his community and members of his faith.

Shalom Weiss – President Trump commuted the sentence of Shalom Weiss. This commutation is supported by former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese, former Solicitors General Ken Starr and Seth Waxman, former United States Representative Bob Barr, numerous members of the New York legislature, notable legal figures such as Professor Alan Dershowitz and Jay Sekulow, former U.S. Attorney Brett Tolman, and various other former elected officials. Mr. Weiss was convicted of racketeering, wire fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice, for which he has already served over 18 years and paid substantial restitution. He is 66 years old and suffers from chronic health conditions.

Noah Kleinman – President Trump commuted the sentence of Noah Kleinman. Mr. Kleinman is a 45-year old father of two children. The mother of his children unfortunately passed away during Mr. Kleinman’s incarceration. Mr. Kleinman has served 6 years of a nearly 20 year sentence for a non-violent crime to distribute marijuana. Mr. Kleinman has had an exemplary prison history and has worked to remain close to his children and his father. Upon release, he looks forward to living with his father, working for the family business, and caring for his children.

A mom has wowed hundreds after sharing a simple iPhone hack that allows you to scan documents straight onto your phone without downloading any new apps.

The woman Brandi Mumma's post was shared on Facebook, where countless phone owners said they didn't know how to scan apps on their iPhone 'until today'.

'Did you know, if you have an iPhone or iPad you actually have a scanner,' Brandi Mumma wrote.

'Parents, if you are planning to scan any work to your teachers or teachers if you are scanning work to your students you can use the "Notes" app.'

To try the trick for yourself, she said you simply need to open a new Note, press the camera button at the bottom of the screen and the 'option to scan the document will pop up'.

'Once the document is scanned, you can email it easier than a photo, plus you can add notes to the scanned document,' Brandi Mumma said.

Hundreds who saw her post said they 'never knew this' and thanked the mother for the 'game-changing' piece of advice.

'Omg! It took me 43 years to learn this,' one woman wrote.

'I actually regularly use CamScanner on my iPhone for business as I wasn't aware of this function. Thanks for enlightening me, will try it today.'  

Another said: 'Oh my goodness! I was going to Officeworks to buy a scanner today! Thank you'.

 Hillary Clinton has suggested President Trump was 'talking to Vladimir Putin on the day of the Capitol riot' and said she would 'love to see his phone records'.  

In a conversation with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on her podcast 'You and Me Both', Clinton said she would be interested in obtaining Trump's phone records to see whether he was on the phone to Putin while the Capitol was under siege.

Clinton, who lost to Trump in the 2016 election, said that it was clear that her former rival has a 'disdain for democracy', but that its true depths may never be known.

She claimed that the president had 'other agendas' while in the White House, and said she hopes that one day it will become clear who Trump was 'beholden to' and who 'pulls his strings'. 

We learned a lot about our system of government over the last four years with a president who disdains democracy and, as you have said numerous times, has other agendas,' Clinton said. 

'What they all are, I don't think we yet know. I hope historically we will find out who he's beholden to, who pulls his strings. I would love to see his phone records to see whether he was talking to Putin the day that the insurgents invaded our Capitol. 

'But we now know that not just him, but his enablers, his accomplices, his cult members, have the same disregard for democracy.'
