Roughly 12 hours after the launch of Operation Roaring Lion, Israeli officials told Ynet that the central story was how Israel managed to surprise Iran for the second time in less than a year, despite months of public discussion about the possibility of war. The officials described the achievement as a tactical surprise rather than a strategic one, but said it fundamentally shaped the opening phase of the campaign.
According to security officials, the surprise was the result of months of intensive intelligence work aimed at mapping patterns of activity among Iran’s senior leadership, identifying routine gatherings and determining when key officials would be least prepared for an attack.
Military intelligence and the Mossad assessed that Iran was expecting a strike overnight. Instead, the operation began in the morning, a decision officials said created an unexpected window of vulnerability.

A missile fell near the Chemdat Shimon synagogue in Bnei Brak on Shabbat. No injuries were reported.
A senior Israeli official reports that the body of Supreme Leader Khamenei was found and removed from the ruins of the compound where he had been staying.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei “is no more,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says in a video statement to the Israeli public.
He says that this morning Israel eliminated IRGC commanders, senior Iranian regime officials, senior nuclear officials, and that in the coming days, “we will hit thousands of targets of the terror regime.”
He says that Israel will create the conditions for the Iranian people to “free itself from the chains of dictatorship.”
The operation against Iran “will continue as long as is necessary,” says Netanyahu, “and stamina is necessary.”
He thanks US President Donald Trump for his “historic leadership.”
“He is a leader who keeps his word,” says Netanyahu.
The premier says the operation will “lead to peace, true peace.”
Netanyahu says Israel went to war to “fundamentally change” the situation in which Iran was on its way to a nuclear weapon that would enable it to drastically increase its threats against its neighbors.
Women laughing on a rooftop in Tehran: “They hit the Supreme Leader compound.”

A wild video shows the moment US and Israeli missiles rained down on Iran Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s compound — while a witness laughed in apparent disbelief.
The footage shows thick smoke billowing from the fortified complex, which, along with military infrastructure, was targeted in what the State Department called “Operation Epic Fury.”
Upon the realization, a woman can be heard laughing, seemingly stunned at the sight.
“Oh my God, they hit it. They struck it. Oh my God!” the woman says.
“They hit the Supreme Leader compound!”
At least seven missiles struck the area around Khamenei’s fortified complex in central Tehran, with additional strikes near the presidential palace.
The 86-year-old supreme leader was reportedly not in the compound — or in Tehran — when the strikes were launched and has since been moved to an undisclosed secure location.
Airstrikes were also reported in other enclaves, including Isfahan, Qom, Karaj and Kermanshah, but the full extent of the attack was not yet clear early Saturday.
Iran responded with a series of retaliatory attacks across in Bahrain, one of which struck a US Navy base.
The US and Israel joint strike came Saturday morning in response to the regime’s refusal to dismantle its nuclear program after weeks of negotiations.
Operation Epic Fury’s objective was to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime,” President Trump said Saturday.
Trump also called upon the Iranian citizens to overthrow the “violent” regime.
The president had given the Iranian officials a 10-15 day deadline to reach an agreement on a nuclear deal on Feb. 19, asserting the regime would face “really bad things” if it didn’t.
Trump insisted he would not accept a deal that would allow Iran to continue to enrich uranium out of fears the regime is using it to build a nuclear weapon, but Tehran has claimed it was using the material for civilian purposes.
On Friday, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee urged US citizens to evacuate the embassy as soon as possible.
The US assault marks the first American-led strikes against the Islamic Republic since Operation Midnight Hammer last June, which targeted the Fordow Uranium Enrichment Plant, the Natanz Nuclear Facility and the Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center.
Strikes targeted Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, an Israeli official said. Other top regime and military commanders were also targeted, according to the official. The results of the strikes were not yet clear.
Targets in the campaign, which began shortly after 8 a.m. Israel time, also included Iran’s military, symbols of government and intelligence targets, according to an official briefed on the operation, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss nonpublic information on the attack.
