Israeli security agencies have recently thwarted a number of terrorist attacks that were being planned against Jews and Israelis in countries around the world, including Western nations. Some of the plots had reached highly advanced stages and were stopped shortly before they were set to be carried out, according to a report aired Sunday evening by Channel 12.
Security officials said that over the past year, dozens of significant terrorist attacks targeting Jews worldwide have been prevented.
Alongside Iran and Hezbollah, Israeli security officials are identifying another actor that is stepping up its activity on the international stage: Hamas. While the terror group is currently holding its fire in the Gaza Strip and is finding it difficult to operate freely in Judea and Samaria because of intensive Israeli security activity, Hamas views Israeli targets abroad as an opportunity to strike Israel with greater freedom of action.
As a result, Hamas has increased its efforts to target Israelis outside the country.
Despite the rise in Hamas activity, Israel assesses that Iran remains the central force behind the planning and execution of terrorist activity abroad and continues attempting to advance attacks.
A senior official at Israel’s National Security Council warned that Iranian activity has expanded significantly.
“The Iranians have substantially expanded the bodies and infrastructure intended to advance attacks abroad,” the official said. “From their perspective, this is a strategic worldview.”
The official added that the current period is considered especially sensitive.
“Every year this is a period prone to trouble, but this year even more so,” he said.
