The remains of Shimon and Rivka Herzl, grandparents of Zionist visionary Theodor Herzl, were exhumed from the historic Jewish cemetery in Zemun, Belgrade, ahead of their transfer to Israel.
They will be laid to rest beside their grandson on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem during a state ceremony on August 5—exactly 77 years after Herzl’s own remains were brought from Vienna and reburied in the Jewish state he had envisioned. President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are expected to attend.
Herzl’s grandfather was deeply influenced by Rabbi Judah Alkalai, an early advocate for the Jewish people’s national return to the Land of Israel. Those ideas helped shape the family environment that preceded Herzl’s creation of modern political Zionism.
More than a century later, another chapter of the Herzl family is finally coming home.
