This is an ongoing habit. Chasidim wear the clothes of Polish nobility (and they got it from the Mongols) so why shouldn't the NK's? Truth is though that the Ottoman robes weren't a choice. They were imposed by the Muslims to ensure the Jews had a distinct form of dress and could be identified. Over time it turned into "This is how we dress!"
