Such singing represents the void felt inside from one who believes in something which he currently is missing or is distanced from. Once one truly doesn't believe anymore, that void ceases to exist. The fact that generally speaking, OTD's aren't non-believers is obvious and hence such singing is very normal by them as well. Just being observant wouldn't fill that void either unless one has a proper understanding of what he is doing and is able to connect meaningfully through his observance. When one doesn't have that connection and understanding it becomes harder and harder to continue being observant at a superficial level and dropping the act becomes much more common, understandably so.
