MAMDANI/SATMAR FACES REVOLT: Socialist Allies Demand Removal Of Jewish NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing mounting pressure from members of his own socialist political coalition demanding the dismissal of NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, with the dispute intensifying following a shooting involving federal immigration agents in Manhattan.

Several prominent Democratic Socialist figures have called for Tisch’s removal, criticizing the NYPD’s handling of the incident and its interactions with federal immigration authorities, according to a report in the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

The controversy intensified after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man during an attempted arrest in Manhattan’s Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday.

The incident occurred while the man was inside a vehicle with a five-year-old child, who was not injured.

Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic congressional nominee endorsed by Mamdani, called for the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group to be disbanded and demanded that Tisch resign as police commissioner.

The New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, which Mamdani has described as his political home, also criticized the police department’s handling of federal immigration enforcement.

The organization warned that Tisch should be dismissed if she could not prevent what its members characterized as NYPD cooperation with ICE.

The demands have highlighted tensions surrounding Mamdani’s decision to retain Tisch, who previously served under former Mayor Eric Adams and belongs to a prominent New York Jewish family.

Her continued leadership initially reassured several mainstream Jewish organizations that had expressed concerns about Mamdani’s political positions and his relationship with anti-Israel activists.

The dispute has also unfolded amid criticism of Mamdani from anti-Israel demonstrators following his participation in an October 7 memorial event honoring victims of the Hamas massacre.

Despite the demands from members of his political coalition, city officials have indicated that Mamdani does not intend to dismiss Tisch.
