Charedie Torah Leaders that turn the public into a voiceless mass incapable of independent thought is not merely a public wrong; it is the very opposite of the Torah’s path

Threats and intimidation by Charedie Gedoilim directed at other rabbis who express their views are not the way of the Torah.

When one reads a letter written in the language of explicit threats, personal warfare slogans, and calls for boycotts and public shaming of those who disagree, it is difficult not to be shocked by the depths to which public discourse can sink.

Beyond the bullying and aggressive rhetoric, the notion that not only is the public forbidden to think, criticize, or exercise independent judgment, but that even rabbis and Torah scholars may not express their own opinions, and that every differing view is met with threatening letters and coercive tactics, is a dangerous and destructive outlook.

Standing against this outlook is the pure halachic tradition and the authentic heritage of the Torah. The Torah instructed even the greatest sage on the Sanhedrin to state his opinion last, so that other voices could be heard.

Furthermore, younger scholars are obligated to express their views. As the Minchat Chinuch (Mitzvah 77) writes:

“If the great scholar states his opinion, and the lesser scholar has his own opinion and does not find the words of the great scholar convincing, he is certainly obligated to express his opinion and disagree with him. Otherwise, this constitutes a perversion of justice.”

(As is likewise explained in the writings of the Ran, Sanhedrin 46a, and Responsa of the Radbaz, Part I, Siman 308.)

It does not say, “He is permitted to disagree,” but rather, “He is obligated to express his opinion and disagree.” Moreover, one may not fear the intimidation of a rabbinic authority, in accordance with the Torah’s commandment: “You shall not be intimidated by any person.”

(As explained in Sanhedrin 6b, which also resolves the question raised by the Bach on Choshen Mishpat, end of Siman 9.)

The Torah demands that every individual bear full responsibility to use his intellect and judgment.

Attempting to frighten people, suppress criticism through threats and public humiliation, and turn the public into a voiceless mass incapable of independent thought is not merely a public wrong; it is the very opposite of the Torah’s path.

The time has come to purge this culture of intimidation from our midst and return to the way of the Torah: genuine clarification of truth, personal moral and spiritual responsibility, and authentic respect for the Torah and its students.

With deep sorrow, and with the hope of restoring the honor and stature of Torah.
