  1. The real scandal is that the state took >50% of the winnings. I thought lottery winnings in the US were tax free.

    2. The reason I thought so is because Canadians like to drive over the border and buy tickets when the prize gets high enough so the question is asked: What are the taxes on the winnings? My understanding was that in the US, the prize itself is tax free but obviously earnings from it are taxes while in Canada it's considered income so it's taxed.
      But you missed the point: the scandal is that the state shows up and grabs over 50% of the winnings. That's theft.
