Councilwoman Inna Vernikov decimates CUNY Chancellor During Contentious Hearing on Antisemitism

On Monday, Councilwoman Inna Vernikov joined members of the New York City Council Higher Education Committee to question CUNY administration and several witnesses on instances of antisemitism on CUNY campuses in light of the scathing findings of the Lippman Report.

The Lippman Report, which was compiled by the Hon. Judge Jonathan Lippman, revealed disturbing antisemitic activity across the CUNY system and a complete lack of oversight and accountability and contained 13 BINDING recommendations that CUNY is expected to abide by, including: Increasing Centralization of Resources for Dealing With Antisemitism and Discrimination, Overhaul CUNY’s Current System for Lodging Complaints Regarding Discrimination and Harassment, Holding Faculty and Others Accountable for Violative Conduct, among others.

It is completely unacceptable that the Chancellor is paid an enormous $670,000 a year salary – entirely funded by taxpayers – and didn’t see fit to come to this hearing prepared to answer basic questions about the discrimination that Jewish students have suffered on CUNY campuses. He paid this committee no more than a series of platitudes and vague answers, demonstrating a serious lack of consideration for the gravity of the issue.
