THREE DOZEN Lakewood-Area Jews Win Their Primaries in Massive Win for Frum Community

Nearly three dozen frum Jews emerged victorious Tuesday night, following campaigns for various races in Lakewood, Jackson, and Toms River for a broad array of positions.

Most notably, hundreds of frum Jackson residents turned out to support their selected candidates for positions on the Ocean County Republican Committee – an extremely powerful local group in the county – and in the process ousting numerous incumbents, some of whom were accused of actively engaging in attempts to stifle Jewish growth in Ocean County.

The frum candidates – some of them incumbents – who won their primaries on Tuesday night include:

  2. Yediot Achranot on Tuesday revealed the drama behind the departure of Chief Rabbi of Moscow Rav Pinchas Goldschmidt shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

When Rav Goldschmidt, who also is President of the Conference of European Rabbis, arrived in Israel 3 months ago, there were already rumors that he fled Moscow due to the war. However, at the time, Rav Goldschmidt issued an official statement that he was in Israel to tend to his ailing father. But at the same time, he said he doesn’t know when he’ll return to Russia. Additionally, before he left, he transferred all responsibilities to deputy Rav of Moscow, Rav Dovid Yushuvayev, and announced he'd continue as head of the Beis Din of CIS and Baltic States.

Yediot reported that sources who attended the annual European Rabbinical Conference in Munich last week discovered that Rav Goldschmidt left Russia after pressure by authorities to support for the war in Ukraine. After he refused, it was hinted to him that it'd be better if he left the country.

Sources in the Jewish community in Moscow say that since Rav Goldschmidt, who's been Rav of Moscow for 33 years, has been assisting refugees from Ukraine in recent months, he's afraid to return to Moscow. Due to his absence, officials in the Jewish community in Russia are trying to oust him from his position and appoint another Rav in his place.

According to the report, Rav Goldschmidt refuses to comment on claims he was forced to leave Russia.

The report adds that in the wake of sanctions on Russia, members of the Jewish community say 1000s of Russian Jews have left the country for Israel and other countries.

“A significant segment of the community's left and others are on the verge of doing so,” a member said. “There are many many leaving. To be a Jew in Russia today is to live with many fears. The biggest question is; ‘When I’m ready to leave, will it be possible? Will the Iron Curtain close, like in the past? Will there be flights?'”

“There’s a lot of concern and pressure in the community. If you have children, you ask yourself – what will the lives of my children and grandchildren be like in a few years? The answer for anyone who understands the situation is that their life will definitely be more difficult. In many ways, it’s reverting to the Soviet Union – living behind the Iron Curtain. There are no flights. In most embassies, there's no staff to issue a visa to the West. Whoever opens their mouth against the war – they open a file against him and arrest him. City council members who spoke out against the war were arrested. Jews were also arrested during demonstrations.”
