Yanky Krausz Found Dead in Elevator Shaft Updated!

1
Yanky Krausz z"l
The body of a 21-year-old Charedi man from Brooklyn was found on Wednesday, one day after he told his wife he would be late coming to meet her.

Yanki Kraus, disappeared shortly after speaking to his wife on Tuesday. Since then, dozens of Charedi volunteers participated in searching for him.

Kraus was supposed to meet his wife Rivkie at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, but an hour before the meeting sent her a text message saying that he would not be on time. His wife then asked him to come home at 4:30 p.m., and he replied "okay". This was the last interaction with him.

The local Shomrim organization disseminated Kraus' photograph and personal details throughout the Borough Park area over the last 24 hours, asking the public to try and locate him.

So far no details were made public with regards to the circumstances of his death.

The levayah will take place tomorrow, Thursday, at 1:30 p.m., at Shomrei Hadas Chapels, located at 3803 14th Ave in Boro Park, Brooklyn.

From Thursday Daily News Report
A 22-year-old Brooklyn man who was reported missing was tragically found dead of an apparent suicide Wednesday, police said.
Yakov Krausz was discovered hanging from a rope in an elevator motor room, police and those who knew him said. The elevator room was located in his building on Webster Ave. near 47th St. in Borough Park.
"He was depressed," said a distant family member who asked to remain anonymous.
Krausz, a married construction worker, was on the way to a doctor for anti-depressants when he went missing, according to the family member.

He was found and not responsive in an elevator shaft on Webster ave.

  2. Enough now I'm pleading and begging Rabbonim to speak out right now and speak out very loud in defence of victims of any form of abuse.

This has gone way to far, what are you waiting for, Rabbonim you have a responsibility to HKBH to stop this now

    1. Hey calm down, the guy was married? He was living the life he chose? Obviously the path he chose wasn't too exciting! So instead of blaming rabbonim it's time the OTD losers the wake up before it's too late THE PATH AWAY FROM TORAH IS A TICKET TO TRAGEDY!

    2. He was a chassideshe ingerman, oh, he wasn't as frum as you, doesn't mean he didn't please God in his own way. STOP BEING SO CRITICAL not everything that happens in the community is because OTD.

    3. Reading what you wrote one can see that you have no idea about life or the responsibility of one yid to another.

It's very clear in Torah or most things we learn and were taught as kids we must look after every yid, we have no right to judge.

I would like to know what caused him to take the route he did as most but not all that take this path is due to some form of abuse.

    4. So who is punishing the person that goes of the Derech not HKBH but you and people like you that call yourself the Torah way, I know 10000000% that we have no right to punish anyone on behalf of HKBHAnd it has nothing to do with the Torah way.

If a person goes of the Derech they are ostracised by their families the kehillah under instructions from a Rov

  7. I never write on forums at all but after reading some comments I had to say something! It's so sad how people not only just assume things but share their assumption as well, as if they're facts! I actually know from first hand that this guy was happily married and was an extremely happy person with so much to live for! Tragedies sadly happen, and it's not our place to give din and cheshbon to why it happened! His loss is a huge tragedy and a really big loss and no one has the right to judge who he was and decide why it happened! How can a person call someone an "OTD loser"?? It's easy to look to put blame on others! Don't blame rabomin and don't blame him! We don't know why this happened and it's not our place to decide or judge! Instead of looking where to put blame and instead of making up stories about someone you don't even know, we should all learn from this story that a neshama was taken away from us and even though we don't know why, or even who he was, we should all try to work on ourselves and be our better selves, rather than taking tragic stories and defining who people are/were and deciding why it happened!

  10. Can we also clarify that this couple/man does NOT look OTD. maybe off the chassidishe derech. But still very much on his own derech. His wife is covering her hair, her elbows, knees and collar bone. You think he is OTD because he is wearing sunglasses and shorts? People like you are the reason people go OTD in the first place. Stop judging. Open your eyes.

  11. To the schmuck who called him an "OTD loser": Who the hell gives you the right to judge people. Is he a loser cuz he's weariing shorts? Cuz he's on the beach with his wife? You stinkin chasidim, who are the biggest crooks when it comes to money, to stealing from the government, to destroying neighborhoods because you only know ghetto life - you are better? I am old enough to have seen how you guys destroyed williamsburg and boro park. Now its Bloomingburg and Monsey. You and your ilk are turning Monsey into a shithole. Beautifully manicured lawns are left to look like jungles, garbage and weeds strewn all over. How about a little courtesy for your neighbors?

  14. Mental‬ illness is still real-issue "one in four adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year" it is a disease that effects everyone no matter what they believe. it wont disappear or vanish on its own. you cant get by by ignoring it or pushing it under the carpet. There are so many people who have ended their life because of this disease. If a kid has strep-throat you give them antibiotics, if the g-d forbid have cancer parents run to treat them. WAKE UP mental illness is no different. ACT NOW if you know someone suffering depression or any sign of mental illness help them get help. please note it takes years of training so unless your a professional please don't try to help them yourself rather encourage them to get help. just because a person suffers from mental illness doesn't mean they get medicated...
and to those naive people who blame or direct these tragedies to the OTD community wake up, smell the coffee and wash your hands clean of innocent blood of the people you chase away. this is not the interpretation of רודף שלום

There's is a family grieving in agony, a young almanah, who's pain we cannot and shud never fathom! Let us, at the very least, do some introspection, and see how we can better ourselves, WITHOUT causing more pain to others! There's enough of that so why cause more!?! And UNITED as klal yisrael, hope Mashiach comes pretty darn fast, because we ALL need him. May his neshama have an aliyah, and may the family have a nechama.

  16. Nobody knows what's inside of another person ,sadness or happiness. In general, we do not know how to deal with or treat depression or mental illness especially in the Frum societies. There's always a stigma attached. From a picture we know nothing. Nobody really has someone to talk to anymore. Rabbanim are not trained in these matters, and sometimes you'll get a very fast "cookie cutter" answer. There are people walking around that are depressed , and no one cares. No one till tragedy hits home and then everybody has an opinion. His wife might know the reasons. WE ARE GENERATION OF LONELY PEOPLE ESPECIALLY WITH ALL THE TECHNOLOGY. Sometimes a smile or a good word to another is worth a lot if you can get it. Perhaps if we wake up from our slumber, Yanky is the shofar sound.

  18. HOW MANY MORE ... IS ENOUGH??

It seems articles such as the above seem to be now a weekly and sometimes a daily occurrence. To some it may just be a piece of news... We read it... Give a "krechtz" perhaps even comment but then go on with our daily routine.
Sadly behind each death, is parents, siblings grandparents and spouses that must grapple with the unthinkable.. The pain, tears and with no answers.
Sometimes it was abuse, bullying and other times depression, in many cases their closest of friends had no idea the scars and suffering they were struggling with.
    If only we had answers:
I wonder to myself at what point will our leaders begin to truly realize the epidemic we have in our midst? At what point will they raise their voices?
Yes there are a few organizations that deal with this issue... Amudim being in the forefront... That said the stigma that is attached to going for help - the stigma that many in our community have towards these organizations have caused our youth to deal with their pain alone.
Many years back there was a young man who struggled, was definitely a OTD - it was said about him, that there was no aveira he did not commit... Yet with love, attention and devotion from the leaders of his generation he changed... He became a beacon of light to the whole world... The Name Reish Lokish is quoted throughout Shas..
Would our Rabbonim and lay leaders do the same today? It seems that many teens and young adults who struggle are pushed away - called bums or OTD by these Rabbonim.
I believe that if our Rabbonim were properly trained to listen rather then critique , to love rather then hate and to see the inner beauty of our youth, even if they don't act or dress like us... Well then everyone of these kids would see the beauty in their own way and flourish.
There is a famous saying - seems like we all can quote it... חנוך לנער אל פי דרכו - educate a child in his or her way... It is a saying we are all familiar with, but how many of us truly internalize it?
As parents it is normal for us to want our child to follow in our ways, dress and and follow our Minhaggim, but the reality is, it's a big world, we are all wired differently... As such not everyone deals with school, lack of friends, divorce of parents or society the same.. For some it is life as usual for others those struggles manifest in many ways and as such they find a life that suits them..
Just because a child or young adult doesn't conform to what we are taught or used to - doesn't make them a bum or OTD... It's labels such as that... Which drives a greater wedge between them.
When will we realize that klal Yisroel is made up of many beautiful stripes and colors... Each one serves hashem in his or her way...

It may hurt when our child rebels, but with love and attention they will feel safe to talk with us...they won't shut us out... Which is the key when struggling with demons.

Each and every community has its beauty, wether chassidish, lit is modern and everything in between... With a growing community comes challenge... Some say we aren't training the next generation to deal with it..
But the fault doesn't just lie in our leaders, it lies in each one of us..
We all have a friend, family member or loved one who has or is struggling... Why do we remain silent? Why are your voices not heard? When will we demand change? When will we stop judging a family, or g-d forbid not marry into a family that has a "nebech"
It is these thoughts and stigmas that make our youth who are struggling hold it in way to long... Who cover up their shame and hurt with way to many band aids ...
It is time for this to change.. And you and I can make it happen.
Let this tragedy awaken us to the possibility of what we can do and become when we are united.
May all their pain and tears be a meilitz yosher to all that still struggle.

I cannot understand how you call yourself an "Orthodox Jew" as your words and sentiments are directly in violation of several Halachot. I did not know this young man and I do not know what his issues were, beyond what is being reported in the news. What I do know is that a young woman is now a widow in her early 20's, a mother, father and siblings are sitting shiva for their son and brother and that legions of people are in mourning because of this.

It no longer matters what caused this young man to take his life...there is no gain in speculating. What matters is what we do going forward.

We MUST speak up and end the scourge of abuse in our communities and shut down the abusers and enablers. We MUST make sure that our schools and communities have proper mental health resources and we MUST stop stigmatization of those who suffer and those who were victimized.

I have offered before and will offer again: Anyone who needs help to pay for a counselor or some sort of intervention. Please e-mail me and you will have it.

May we never read about another tragic loss such as this ever again.

I love how everyone comments here about getting rid of abusers- while that is true it has nothing to do with this tragic circumstances of this person's death. What should be stressed is that as a community we need to get rid of the stigma of mental illness- that ppl don't have to go to therapists in fear- that family members and friends can know so they can help and be a support system. .and there are many people who need help who are not getting any, or are not getting the correct treatment because they are afraid of ruining their chances in shidduchim or shidduchim with other family members. . This is the Shanda that we as a community have to fix!

Go ahead blame it on religion!

Its amazing how people just find someone to blame on everything. If you are Haredi - you will blame him as not being Haredi enough. If you oppose religion - you will blame it on religion etc.

At the end of the day - this is beyond tragic and sad!
A young life has been ended so tragic!
    There is a family mourning.
People that will have to live with it for the rest of their lives.
People that will not forgive themselves. - Perhaps more could have been done!

Speaking about religion - facts show - the ones that are TRULY religious within live much more a meaningful and happy life.
The ones that are truly religious (i am not speaking wearing a certain dress code, etc!) rarely commit suicide.
The secular world is not too much of an happier place!

OTD do not lead happier lives - yes they had issues and tried blaming it on religion.
But in a long term perspective, after enjoying the run - they are back to a life with nothing to live for!

    Sad... sad...sad...

WE NEED TO TAKE CARE OF THEM so they can look back and be proud of how far theyve come. you will be sorely missed yanky. pray for all you friends to be able to live their lives to the fullest.

  36. It's unfair to put most of the blame on rabbonim, parents, friends or family. Most parents try very hard to deal with their children's problems, including rebbes , but don't always succeed. At the end, the child's life is his responsibility for better or worse. Im not saying it's their fault, I'm saying responsibility, because at the end if they refuse help or can't help themselves then why blame others. It's a terrible thing and right now nobody has the ansewers because it's a pretty new happening and increasing at an alarming rate every day. Somebody should make an emergency asifeh starting next week.

    2) Medication must be monitored to make sure it's the right one for that person. They can bring the exact opposite of the intended result.

    3) Sort of off topic because he wasn't OTD but I feel like I need to say it. OTDs need to stop whining. If they don't believe in G-d then life is meaningless because life and death are accidents or in some cases a choice. You came from nowhere and you're going nowhere so sing heartfelt songs and drop a flower on an OTD grave and move on. If you do believe in G-d show it!

Obviously he has some mental issues that weren't taking care successfully, and who knows how many people suffer in silence like him.
My heart goes to his beautiful family.May Hashem give them the chizuk they need in this tragic time.

  41. What I don't understand is this OTD business...Why do we sit and judge people?? No one knows a persons struggles or accomplishments to get to where they are. What you don't see is the good these people have done in their lives. What you don't see is the sweetest young women who is now an almana or what a wonderful person her husband was. If he did have such a tragic death why do we sit and judge? Why don't we try to help or at least pray for the family? Just because your so frum doesn't mean you have the right to judge - remember your not immune to judgement either. In all honesty, having a black hat on your head does not give you a leeway to talk bad about others- if anything before you feel so smug about being a frum Jew, take a good hard look at yourself and see how you are treating others.

  42. why dont we end all this in a prayer-
a prayer to his family that they overcome this in dignity and grace.
a prayer to his wife, that she have the strength to move on from this tragedy and be able to lead a happy fulfilling life. a prayer that she pass this test with strength that g-d has given her. a prayer that hte rest of her life should only be built on one good after the other.
a prayer that we only learn from this and grow. That we can look out for each other and help those in a time of need.
Is this not what am yisroel is all about?
