Body recovered by medics
A 28 year-old woman from Flatbush jumped to her death from the George Washington Bridge on Sunday, officials reported.
It was around 4:15 p.m., when a man driving over the bridge said he saw the unidentified woman jump from the bridge, near the New York Tower, said Joe Pentangelo, a Port Authority Police spokesman.
The man got out of his vehicle and looked over the railing of the bridge down to the Hudson River, some 200 feet below, where he saw the woman's body in the river, Pentangelo said.
Offiers contacted the New York Police Department, whose harbor patrol unit pulled the body from the water, Pentangelo said, adding that the woman was pronounced dead a short time later at Mt. Sinai St. Luke's Hospital in Manhattan

  3. With all due respect to the deceased, why must we label her as 'frum'. The pictures of her clearly have her wearing clothing that does not conform to modesty dictates. I am not in this world to judge people for there choice of clothing. Everyone should live and be well! On the other hand, if they choose to wear plunging necklines, we are not obligated to affix a 'frum' title to their names. May she rest in peace.

    1. She only wore skirts below the knee, long sleeves, and crew collars.
She was a woman who kept the laws of Tznius proudly.
What her clothes were, we're lively, just like her.
Modest clothing, do not need to be bland.

    2. That's disgusting of you! Don't go disrespecting Rebecca like that! You don't know her and don't make up assumptions. She was completely frum, dressed fully tznius, always worked on herself to be better, and gave everything possible to anyone that needed help. She was the most special, happiest and bubbly person I've ever met in my life. Plus it's not your place to judge her on the way she used to dress. Even of she wouldn't have been frum, it doesn't take away who she was as the most special person. That's completely wrong of you to decide who is labeled as what and why that matters. Next time think before you publicly make negative comments about such a situation. That's really rude of you

  6. We have to draw a lesson from this tragedy.
Is this another case of abuse?
Just to bury this & sweep it under the rug is no answer.

She was a frum girl, frummer than alot of women with spitzlach that commit adultery! So if it's true to what you said that you don't judge people .... then keep your comments to yourself ...
just 3 weeks ago a well known Mashgiach was arreseted for having sexual relations with 3 sisters....I think he insisted that his daugters not have dressses with "plunging necklines"

    Chaim:
I was debating whether to post this ....but I got the pictures from someone close to the family ...they want her to be remembered with these pictures ...
We have had over 70 young people from "heimishe: families, either commit suicide or die from an overdose ....since Rosh Hashana
I have decided after consulting with frum professionals to publicize it so that people be tuned in to people that they are close to, to try to notice signs of depression ...
If this article saves but 1 human being then it is worth publicizing this

The one from the bridge is extremely disturbing, especially for those of us who loved her.

      Take it down.

She looks like a frum woman, wearing long sleeves and long skirts. I don't see any plunging neckline.
    Poor woman and poor family.

  13. Rebecca and I were both students at Brooklyn College. And while I didn't know her well I do remember seeing her always smiling, having a bubbly personality, and wanting to help others. This news is so sad. To all of those on here who have hateful words to say, please know that she had a good soul and you never in a million years could have guessed how such a sweet person on the outside could possibly be dealing with such emotional pain on the inside. To her family and friends, I am so terribly sorry for your loss and hope that everyone can heal. Let her be remembered for all of the good that she did.

  14. Just leaving my thoughts after reading about Rebecca's death in the Daily News. It made me think of another young woman who killed herself recently, whose name I unfortunately can't remember, but she was born to an Orthodox family and lived in that community until she was an adult and got out.

I respect everyone's religious beliefs, but I can't believe some of the stuff I'm reading about how Rebecca didn't dress "modestly." To me, she looks like a vibrant young women who does not dress inappropriately at all, especially these days when so many women don't respect themselves.

Honestly, I cannot see anything wrong with how she's dressed in any of the photos -- in one of them she's in jeans and a sweater, holding an adorable puppy. In another it looks like she's somewhere warm and has exposed arms. Is it somehow terrible or sacriligious to be comfortable in hot weather? In another she's wearing a dress, in another she's wearing a sweater...

I'm sorry, but not only is the criticism inappropriate, but do stop to think a young woman like this can be affected by criticism saying she's somehow immodest? What about young women like her?

Your interpretation of religious modesty does not entitle you to denigrate a vibrant, normal-looking, appropriately-dressed woman, and I do wonder if that kind of nonsense contributed to her depression. Act like compassionate human beings, please.

  15. this poor girl is gone and some men are blabbering about the length of the sleeves of her dress, then you wonder why frum men have bad reputations,
it is sad that people are insensitive and are unable to see the pain that others are enduring. a conservation or two might made it possible for Rebecca's life to go in a different and happy direction.

  16. As someone who misses Rebecca everyday, talking to her would not have helped.
This was not her first attempt, and had just returned from inpatient treatment.

Rebecca was so full of life on the outside.

She loved working at a local HASC house, was so sure I would keep one of my foster cats (which was returned after a failed adoption the day she died ), and was so Tiggerish ( always bouncing down the hall).

This was not an issue of OTD, or the like. She was not well, and sadly felt this was her only way.

My husband and I keep her in our thoughts all the time, and continue to wish her neshoma peace.
