Ok, I think we should start wearing baseball caps, with the insignia of the respective yeshivos...
so if your a Telzer, the cap should have a large "T" and so on....

Will the boycott travel across the Atlantic?
A group of Chabad bochurim in New York are trying to garner support to join a boycott that originated in Israel over the rising prices of fedora hats
Organizers are saying that prices of the Italian made Borsalino hats have risen by $50 in the last 5 years, bringing the price of the typical Yeshiva student’s hat in Israel to $274.
Petitions going around in Yeshivas in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak are threatening to stop purchasing hats if the prices don’t drop. According to Makor Rishon newspaper, some 10,000 people signed.
“Borsalino is telling us that it’s a luxury item and the price doesn’t have to be cheap, but they know the truth – that everyone still buys it, not only a select few,” one organizer said.
“It’s a common product and there is no reason the price should be so high,” the person added. “A manufacturer raises prices to increase profits on a product that isn’t selling well, but if the masses are buying this excuse doesn’t exist.”
Regular consumers of the hats made of felt from Belgian rabbit are Lubavitcher chassidim, and students of Litvish and Sephardic Yeshivos. Other chassidic groups wear hats with beaver finish or a fur shtreimel.
Recently, bochurim in a Chabad Yeshiva in New York have asked their ‘hanhala’ administration if they would be allowed to join the boycott and start wearing a flat cap, also called a casket hat.
Why not just skip the hat altogether and just wear a kipa? There's no halacha to wear a Borsalino, or any other hat for that matter.
ReplyDeleteKnighted Vorpal Sword- Oh you know what...since you said it I think I will ignore all my Rebbeim, Roshei Yeshivas, and Gedolim (Rav Chaim Kanievsky, Rav Elyashiv Zatzal) and stop wearing a hat. Thanks for your enlightening insights.
ReplyDeleteTo second commenter: I'm glad your gedolim fed you this crock of shit. There is no halacha that says you must wear a hat 24 x 7. The only halacha is from the mishna brura who said you should have a double covering when you daven. Frankly I think it's ridiculous to wear that stupid thing to a supermarket, walmart, the zoo, etc. BTW when did white shirts and black pants become a halacha?
ReplyDeleteAnon 12:48- So glad you could learn a sugya better then all the Gedolim. I'm sorry that you "gedolim"/"rabbonim" never taught you about the issur of Nivul Peh. Regarding white shirt black parts I do not think its halacha but it became a Hanhaga of the benei Hayeshivos. But if you want a source about black pants see Shach 178:1.
ReplyDeleteHey 11:51...
ReplyDelete".....But if you want a source about black pants ....."
YOU'RE the Primary Source for pants, rebbetzin or stamm zhlubb...
Plenty of gedolim & REAL Ehrliche as opposed to Gefehriche , today in EY wear yarmulkas, no hats, sugios aside... really...
the Derby....
What's next ??.... No purple suspenders.... sugios aside.
Additionally, clothing styles change from generation to generation and Jews follow it more or less... More, more... than less...
ReplyDeleteTake hat styles & colors.... Just look at old photos and you see what I mean... The brimmed -down fedora was originally an elegant ladies' hat adapted by designers for men... So that's why Yeshivish today wear fedoras.
Hats (fedoras) in general, since JFK's days, are basically out of style... Hence many children & grandchildren of hat wearers, now wear ONLY kippas on Shabbos... Really... Sugios aside... That's the new style...Whether you like it or not..Especially in EY...
I've also noticed that more & more men , even in Chassidic circles ,come to shul weekdays with kippas ONLY....
The Derby..... In style..
Hey 11:51 pooh pooh I said a bad word. Grow up you brainwashed putz. Any of your gedolim who say you must wear a black hat 24 x 7 is ignorant. Period. And yes I have no shame wearing colored pants and colored shirts. Shabbos and Yom tov is for white shirts.
ReplyDeleteBefore you decide that I posted on shabbos. ... I'm in eretz Yisrael.
ReplyDeleteDerby- I don't disagree with anything you said. Not sure why you think I would. Not saying it doesnt change. My only point above was to challenge the person who thought everone who wears a hat (like myself) would stop (against the advice of my rabbonim) because he said so.
ReplyDeleteAnon 1:15- Pooh pooh the torah, I think is what you meant to say. Sorry, but I am not going to "grow up" for issurei Deoraisa of nivul peh and Onaas Devrorim. Happy you can pooh pooh those so easily.
Okay so tell me do you wear a hat all the time or only for davening? Bottom line is, there is no halacha of wearing a hat all the time. Second if you follow the mishna brura, you can wear any cap; kangol, baseball, etc. Who decided it has to be a $300 borsalino? And it only applies during davening.
