As many as three Hillary Clinton donors — including one who also supported US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — are among the prospective jurors for former Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann’s trial.
Special counsel John Durham’s team objected to putting one Clinton contributor on the panel after the man said he would “strive for impartiality as best I can.”
But the prosecution was overruled by Washington, DC, federal Judge Christopher Cooper, who said the man — who works in public policy for Amazon and appeared to be in his 40s — “expressed a high degree of confidence” that he could be impartial.
Cooper, nominated by former President Barack Obama, also said Durham’s prosecutors could use one of its peremptory challenges to strike him from the panel for the trial, the first to result from his three-year probe into the government’s investigations of purported ties between former President Donald Trump and Russia.
Judges can only remove people from a jury pool if questioning reveals they’re not suited for service, including being biased in favor of one side or the other.
Durham sat behind his team in the courtroom’s well, taking notes during the jury selection process.
In 2016, DC voters favored Clinton over Trump, 90.9% to 4.1%, and Democrats in the nation’s capital now outnumber Republicans, 76.5% to 5.4%, according to an April 30 tally posted online by the local Board of Elections.
According to state records, Houri was born in 1952 and died a year later of illness. Ministry authorities are scheduled to open the grave on Monday next week and take a DNA sample from the remains for the purpose of establishing family authentication, the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said it was acting under a law passed four years ago that permits opening a grave in order to carry out genetic testing to determine family ties. The ministry added that it was acting “out of a desire to reach the truth and to remove suspicions of the families regarding the identity of their loved ones.”
Under an agreement between the Houri family and state authorities, the DNA sampling will be done at the state-operated Abu Kabir Forensic Institute, though an expert on behalf of the families will also be present, the Walla news website reported.
Mazel Barako, Houri’s sister, welcomed the development, telling Walla News that it was “good news after years of upheaval from the state.” However Barako added that she did not trust the state investigation since the families were not allowed to conduct their own DNA tests.
“I must admit that even if they say that it is my brother I won’t believe the results of the investigation,” she said.
The price that Prime Minister Naftali Benett paid to maintain his coalition via bribery to the Islamist Ra’am party was revealed in a Yisrael Hayom report on Monday morning.
The prime minister promised Ra’am tens of millions of shekels of additional funding to the Jisr az-Zarqa Regional Council to keep the Ra’am party in the coalition.
Jisr az-Zarqa may be familiar to some readers as the name of the northern Israeli-Arab town from where rioters threw rocks and other objects at Highway 2 during Operation Guardian of the Walls a year ago, forcing police to close the area to traffic.
According to the report, during talks with Ra’am last week, party chairman Mansour Abbas demanded tens of millions of shekels in additional funding beyond what was agreed upon in the original coalition agreements.
In addition to the increased funding, Ra’am announced on Sunday evening that the coalition approved the construction of new homes and the expansion of existing homes in unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev. The coalition also approved a change in government policy prohibiting the demolition of existing illegal structures.
In response to the reports, the Likud party stated: “In order to maintain his position, Bennett continues with the liquidation sale of the State to the Shura Council. The significance of the decision to allow and approve unlimited illegal construction is the final transfer of the Negev.”
Religious Zionism Party chairman Betzalel Smotrich stated: “As expected, Ayelet Shaked was the first to fold and finance terrorism and crime without any of the oversight mechanisms she promised to whitewash illegal construction by the Bedouins and allow them to take over more and more land. We won’t forget and we won’t forgive.”
