Chareidie Girls High Schools in Yerushalayim Don't Want Sefardie Girls!

מי כעמך ישראל

A growing controversy has erupted in Yerushalayim amid claims of severe discrimination in admissions to girls’ high schools, with some institutions allegedly refusing entry to Sephardic students based on their family background.

In an interview aired on Channel 13, L., a 13-year-old student who has been at home for six months after failing to secure a placement, recounted her painful experience: “I’ve been home since the exams, just waiting for something to happen.”

L. said she was subjected to invasive questions during the admissions process, including where her father davens and whether her brothers attend Sephardic or Ashkenazi yeshivas. Despite excelling academically, she was rejected after being told her family was “not suitable.” One high school even suggested she change her last name to sound “less Sephardic.”

In a shocking statement, L. recalled: “The principal told me I’m a ‘berachah levatalah’ and said that even if Rav Ovadia himself came, she still wouldn’t accept me.”

L.’s mother, Michal, confirmed that several schools pressured her to change her children’s surname to improve their chances of acceptance. “I changed the last name for two of my kids, and it worked,” she said tearfully. “They’re accepted, they’re happy — but it hurts me deeply that some of my children live with one last name and others with another. We’re the same family.”

Yael, another mother of two daughters left without placements, described the toll on her children: “The worst pain I’ve ever experienced is watching my daughter sit at home in silence. My older daughter has been without a school for six months, and because of that, I wasn’t even allowed to register my younger one. She got accepted to four excellent schools in Yerushalayim, but the Chareidi Education Department decided no.”

Yael criticized the broader system: “If someone wants to open an Ashkenazi-only school, they should make it private. As long as it’s funded by taxpayer money, there cannot be admissions based on ethnicity. Opening separate schools for Sephardim isn’t a solution — it just cements the discrimination.”

Another Sephardic mother shared her devastation: “My daughter is an outstanding student. I never imagined she wouldn’t be accepted. At the last minute, they told us she was rejected. We realized it’s because we’re Sephardic. Now my daughter refuses to leave the house. She cries constantly.”

  1. At what point did the Chareidi leadership decide to read through Der Strumer and say "Yes, we really should be like how they describe us"?

  2. Don't fall for the leftist libelSeptember 3, 2025 at 5:47 PM

This disgusting libel has been circulating for years.

But we know that one of the things that Torah is acquired with is, as stated in Pirkei Avos, מכיר את מקומו, knowing one's place. The place of Sephardic students is in a Sephardic school, which follows their mesorah, their minhagim, etc. Why do people want to push them into an institution which follows a different mesorah, with different minhagim, language???

Now the truth is a "disgusting libel?"
Who is pushing? What the Hell are you talking about?
These Sfardie parents want to send their children to there!
Don't lecture parents with your twisted "Pirkei Avos' where they should send their children.
These schools are government-funded funded and every parent can send their children where they want, if the Ashkenazi Schools don't like that, then they should go private and do what the hell they want!
I remember very well when the Bais Yaakov of Boro- Park was totally integrated with Chassidishe, Litvishe girls all together, until Bobov started their own schools, all the Bobover Rebbes children went there!
When I attended Bobov, there were all kinds in the class, all different backgrounds and everyone knew that when you came home, that you had a different minhag!
This different minhagim, different mesorah crap should immediately stop in government-funded schools!
      Shame on all of you
Stop preaching Ahavas Yisrael if you cant practice it, and thats why we have a shidduch crisis because of this stupid "different Mesorah, different minhagim crap!
When they become alte yentes and alte bochrim, all this different Mesora, Minhagim crap goes out the window!

    2. It's interesting the Goyim see us all as one people. But we can't learn from the Goyim we have to to make divisions of our people.
We should know that in Torah and mitzvahs we are the same people.Only on minute details do we have differences.. Don't make the tofel ikar.

  4. He may have been asked invasive questions. But where the girl's father davens is not one of them. All schools do so, to all girls. That's how communities work.

  5. I don’t believe you that you’re only tummeling altz govt funding. This is just another opportunity for you thinking you got traction to slam the Black Hatters. Because you want your chorus to echo your sinah you want the Sfardiyot forced into private Ashkenazishe schools too - where in significant numbers at least - they don’t belong. Al Titoish Toras Imecha is a thing, not that you believe in anything Toradik that gets in the way of your Untoradik agenda

      You Liar!
Sfardie girls are not being "forced into private Ashkenazi Schools," we are talking about government-funded schools, where the parents of a Sfardie is CHOOSING to send his child to an Ashkenazi school! Why not?
Mesorah? Our Mesorah is 613 mitzvois, take your archaic Minhagim and shove them where the sun will never shine!
Minhagim should not be taught in schools, not even private schools, minhagim belong in the home, period!
Your "mantra" "Al Titoish Toras Imecha" is now an excuse for "Black SHITT"ers" to throw out Sfardishe Girls from Ashkenazi Schools, this sickness doesn't prome Ahavas Yisrael, this will not bring Moshiach!
Children should go to any school they choose, and if the "Black SHITT"ers" don't like it , they should homeschool them!

  6. If the ashkenazi schools took all the sefardim that wanted to come it would become a sefardi school and the sefardim themselves won’t want to send there. They are just as racist as the ashkenazim for not wanting to send to a sefardi school.

Who cares if it becomes a Sefardie school?
Jewish schools should be about teaching God's Torah and Middos, the rest is a bunch of crap!
      They are "racist?'
      What are you blabbering about?
A Sefardie parent wants to put his child in an Ashkenazi School, why is that "racist" and why is that something bad?
      I don't get it!
Didn't we all stand at Har Sinai or are you now saying that maybe Moshe gave two Toras?

No I don't eat kitniyois on Pesach, but there are people sitting next to me in shul that do!
No one tells anyone what to do, we have a shulchan Aruch, the Sfardim follow the Mechaber and we follow the Ramah, so why can't my children who follow the Rama go to the same school as a child who follows the mechaber?
      This is crazy!
I have a minhag that I make Kiddush on Shabbos day and then I eat herring and crackers, and then we wash, but my neighbor across the hall, washes right away, and yet we live on the floor!
His children know that they wash and my children know that we eat herring!
Why cant those children be in the same school!
      Who started this crap?

    2. Let me add
That the Rama had written his own entire Shulchan Aruch but then found out that Rav Yosef Karo had already finished his, he could have said "ok" but we have our own minhagim...... but NOOOOOOOOOO
He decided not to have Klall Yisrael separated and just added his remarks to the Shulcha Aruch of R' Yosef Karo
Minhagim should not be a barrier and separation of Klall israel, this must be stopped!
This madness is crazy and being fed by the Chareidie crazies!

    3. To DIN
You asked "Why can't those children be in the same school ?"
For a simple reason: Walls in the classrooms are not extendables, and the number of seats are therefore limited. Life is all about choices.

      "Who started this crap ?"
This crap has a name, it's called: "thousands of years of Golus". So, with or without the yiddisha medine, you cannot delete/change/erase/uproot minhagim so easily. Ask your local Dayan. This raises the question about why these particular Sefaradi parents try so hard to delocalise their own girls.
Besides the herring on the crackers, Yidden fin Hungary, Tunisia, Uruguay, Italy, Syria, New Jersey and Har Nof have a very different nusach for davening, for the Seder nacht and for their specific chinuch in general. You can't change this either.
Only communists tried to make everyone equal (and it really didn't end well).

If as you say " Walls in the classrooms are not expendables" then they should build more schools
"you cannot delete/change/erase/uproot minhagim so easily."
Who ever said that one should delete/erase/ uproot minhagim?
You are putting words in my mouth!
Hitler ym"s changed the Jewish world, we are now all together, meaning that is exactly how the RBS"O wants it! He wants us together, this separate shevatim deal didn't work out then and its not working out now, that's why the Mishna says that TU Be'Ov is a great Yomtov, the day that Shevatim mixed and intermarried!
"a very different nusach for davening???????"
Exactly, by davening we daven in separate minyanim, but learning Torah, now has different minhagim? We all learn the same Torah meSinai , and minhagim need to be taught at home; this is not the school's business! And there is nothing wrong for children in the same class to see that others are different! You want to stop that?
BTW, in Beit Shemesh there are shuls, mine for instance, that whoever is the Shliach Tzibbur Davens his minhag, and everyone quietly davens there own just like we do at the airports and at Simchas and in the shelters!
There are other Shuls where they have a designated Minhag and everyone who has a different minhag follows the Shulchan Aruch and quietly davens the minhag they are used to.
But to compare different Nusachs in Shuls to Girls in Schools is asinine!
Why these particular parents wanted to davka put their child in an Ashkenazic setting is none of your business and shouldn't be the business of the Menhalim who are paid by the government!
" Seder nacht and for their specific chinuch in general." This has nothing to do with my argument that every child who goes to a government-funded school should go to the school; she wishes! Do whatever you want at the Seder, I have attended many sedarim in my life and I can tell you that there are no two alike! No one died from that !
      Lets cut out the crap!

  9. DIN will never admit to true items that interfere with his trashing of Charedim. There have been many instances of Sefardim telling Ashkenazi yeshivos to let them in because they only want to be in an Ashkenazi yeshiva - not a Sfardi one. When a group of 17 Sefardi bochurim approached an alter Yishuvnik Rosh yeshiva with their tayna he brilliantly told them I can’t accept you for the same reason. I also want to be in an Ashkenazi yeshiva which is no longer Ashkenazi if I accept all of you!

They have to make a special place in hell for that "brilliant" R"Y!
So his yeshiva won't be Ashkenazi exclusively, what is wrong with that? The Gemara and Meforshim address Ashkinazim and Sefardim differently?
It's all the same Torah! and this 'brilliant R'Y" didn't let them in!
Shame on him and his dumb sheep followers!

He’s quick to curse out an Adam gadol of old but has no problem that 17 Sefardim wanted nothing to do with their own kind so they tried to take over one of our yeshivos. DIN meanwhile would be the first one to bark & howl in protest if a group of 17 Satmar bucherim insist they only want to be in a small Dati Leumi yeshiva instead of a UTA affiliate

      Delete
    3. DIN the "Roeh"
No I wouldn't care if 17 Satmar Bochrim wanted to attend a Dati Leumi school or even vice versa, my entire point, which apparently doesn't penetrate your thick, stupid skull, is that every child should attend the school they wish, period!
If the Adam Gadol said what you said he said then we have the gemarrah that states:
במקום חילול השם אין חולקין כבוד לרב

  10. Elephant in der tzimmerSeptember 5, 2025 at 2:26 PM

There are many cases that yeshivos & BYs can't accept the Sfardim simply because the Sfardim aren’t frum enough, they come from homes that play fast & loose mit Halacha & hashkofo. In one city outside Israel that has a large Moroccan population the Moroccans had to make their own schools. They had become the butt of jokes when many of them were not even strictly shomer Shabbos at home. They were mocked as trying to get interviews with the line “but we want ourrr kids to be rrreligious”. Not that this is any problem in DIN’s warped worldview where he fawns all over atheist anti-Torah Zionists as being feineh.

      Wow ... לשון הרע
and a lie that the racist Ashkenazim are spreading because they hate what they call the "franks" ... I remember when Satmar in New York grabbed a bunch of these Yemenites and converted them to be Satmar and then promptly married them off to their bums!
The Yeshivishe R"Y hate them like poison and so they
ba'read" them with all kinds of out-and-out lies!
